Terminus Multitrack Station
A simple guide about scaling the crossing for multitrack Terminus, which seems to be very popular among many players.

  1. Build a big station with 3 track tiles at the entrance.

  2. Add crossings like this. These will serve as entrances and exits.

  3. Now add 3 track tiles in the middle. These will be our main line entrance and exit.

  4. Connect your middle crossings to the main lines.

  5. Now connect the outer crossings to the main lines too.

Time to add signals. If your rail is right-handed, place entrance on the right, as shown in the pictures below. If your rail is left-handed, you can switch the sides, it doesn't matter.

  6. First place signals on the straight lines, to see which lines are which.

  7. Next we place signals into the crossings. First, place all entrance signals:

  8. Then place all the exit signals:

  9. And it's done. You can watch this station in action here:

(if the video doesn't work click here to watch on youtube)

The station's efficiency can be improved with several upgrades, which require more vertical space.
Simple RoRo Multitrack Station
Let's build a simple RoRo station. Since we don't want to lose our Extensions, we are limited to 7 platforms in this scenario.

  1. First, place your station like this so your trains can exit the other side.

  2. On the entrance side, choose which tracks will be your main track and build a 6-long track. I choose two tracks, because one track would be a bottleneck and cause too much waiting.

  3. Now simply connect all the entrances into your main tracks. After that, you can mirror your creation on the exit side of the Station.

  4. When both sides of the station have tracks, add signals on both sides to separate different platforms.

And it's done.
Station designs
I'll post some inspiration screenshots.

I'm sure many people can figure out how to build simple Stations like this one:

But have you ever tried building your station on a slope?

Personally, I really like the idea of having a station with free tracks in the middle

I just wish there were no graphical issues with these :)

Simple RoRo station + free middle tracks
Due to the graphical glitches with the Stations above, we can use this build to simulate the free tracks in the middle. However the tunnel too long, and having multiple trains pass through can cause waiting times.

  1. Start your Station like this:

  2. Now create the holes for your tunnel, you need at least 2 tiles of free space between the tunnel and the Station.

  3. Build the tunnels, then you can complete your Station.

  4. On the entrance side, reach your platform lines out to the level of your tunnel:

  5. Then reach out with the main line, you want at least 6 tiles long, not including the tunnel connection.

  6. Connect it all to the main line:

  7. Now mirror it on the exit side.

  8. The rest is identical to the Simple RoRo station described above, add signals at the connection to the main line.

Due to long rails before and after the station, there is one extra step - place signals at the Station entrances and exits:

  9. When placing signals near the Station, you might have issues placing this signal, you need to move your mouse to the bottom end of the tile, there are only a few pixels of space where it registers the signal on the proper side.

And here's a video of the Station in action. In this video, I also show the rest of the track layout, a quick ride on a train, and placing orders on new trains. (link to youtube)

  • Signals every 2 tiles are placed to maximize speed.
  • I deliberately placed a crossing at the entrance and exit of the Station, to demonstrate how trains get clogged at the crossing. It is the big reason why you should avoid track crossings whenever possible.

Every time I've had a train go the wrong way (ie get lost), it has always been my fault. I would have a too long train block a signal to create a head to head condition or some other transient condition where a train can't move for a long time.

The game has settings in the setup for trains to go another direction (if possible) in those conditions.. For example if it is possible to reverse and then move.

But all of those were always badly designed tracks or signals on my part, not game design.

I'm sure the game has bugs, but so far it's all been issues by me, not the game.

Really great ideas!

I like your idea with free tracks in the middle! looks like i got new favorite layout! Thank you!

If you don't want that, you can take screenshots of your railway instead and ask for help in the discussions. We were already able to solve many mistakes. The game indeed has bugs, but I'm not aware of any that would cause the trains to leave their ordered destinations, and I'm also not aware of anyone else having this issue.

That does sort of mess the entire game up doesn't it. I'd hardly call it a fix. Ler's face it the game is designed to allow for trains to use the same track and if all the precautions are taken it should work. The game is obviously buggy and I'll never find out what's causing it if I play the game so it can't happen.

You should start with tracks that are not connected to each other. That will prevent your trains from getting lost.

Terrific, I'll give it a try, My biggest problem is running out of money well before I've built anything fancy. Plus as soon as I start making money with about 8 locos a couple of them will start forgetting their routes and end up where they have never been programmed for. After sorting them out everything gors berserk and it's nothing to have 4 or 5 locos trying to use the same line. I had one loco stubbornly refusing to go to one particular station, so I sent him back to the depot, deleted his route and re-entered it again, he'd stick to his schedule 3 or 4 trips and suddenly decide to go on holiday. Even with multiple bypasses he still managed to cause chaos. I spent 2 hours moving signals around and bulldozing and replacing track, lengthening station platforms, but what really finished me off was all this chaos sent me broke. Maybe that's why railway owners employ managers, let them get the ulcers. :-(

I'd love to see more setups than just the terminus - statement from someone that didnt play open TTD
