Introduction
Welcome to my Walkthrough and 100% Achievement Guide to The Fall.

SPOILER ALERT: As goes without saying for a walkthrough, you might encounter story spoilers. Unless you're stuck, I'd recommend playing the game at least once on your own, as you will need to play the game (almost fully) twice to unlock all the achievements anyway due to two exclusive achievements (you're guaranteed to unlock one on your first playthrough, you can't miss both). This also gives you another chance to unlock any achievements you missed on your first run.

I will present the individual achievement guides alongside the walkthrough at the most appropriate (in most cases the earliest) point to unlock them. While I describe the location of all the notes necessary to unlock Diag-Gnostic in the walkthrough, there's a collected list with screenshots in the appendix for easier reference. For faster access, here's a table of contents for the individual achievements.

The Cave
After you have crashlanded, you'll be required to scan two points to confirm proper function of the interface (hooray for tutorials). After you've mastered this task, you're good to go.

Start by walking right, past the heap of scrap until you find a micro wrench on the ground. Pick it up and go back to the scrap heap you just passed. Use the wrench on the robotic arm to pick it up. Now keep walking all the way to the right until you trigger a motion scanner.

This is the first time you'll have to your operating system screen. In order to progress, try to unlock your Camouflage System - which, as it turns out, you actually can't do at the moment. Use the robotic arm on the security card at the elevator control panel to obtain it.

Now go all the way back to the left until you enter an elevator platform. Interact with the elevator control panel to activate it (notice the delay before it actually starts moving - this is important later on). Once you're upstairs, move to the left. Just before the security terminal there is a metal pan lying on the ground - pick it up. Then use your security card on the terminal and enter the next room.

You'll encounter a creepy humanoid figure which starts questioning you. Regardless of your answers, you can't convince it you're not malfunctioning - so it starts shutting you down. As this endangers you're pilot, you're given permission to activate your Network Interface - do so in your operating system screen. Once that's done, you can network with the crane to smash the figure and escape.

Head back down the elevator and move right until you get back to the crucified cloaking pattern. network with it to reveal another mark-7 combat suit. While talking with it make sure to request its gun as this gives your character vital information. Collect some of the dripping blood in the metal pan. Then move back left to the elevator. Interact with the control panel, then immediately run towards the right off the platform. The elevator will leave without you, opening access to the cave below.

Climb down and move to the right. You'll find the creature you are looking for holed up in a little cave. Place the metal pan with the blood on the ground and move away to the left until you hear you hear the creature drinking. Then slowly move back to the right until you can interact with the creature from afar. Network with the ARU side arm - and pick it up after it has taken care of the creature for you.

Congratulations, you now have a gun! Which means it's tutorial time again. As you fire your first shot you alarm the first wave of security droids. Try shooting them in the head, as this deals more damage and allows you take them out in a single shot. Stick to cover until they've finished their shooting pattern, then it's your time to shoot. If you manage to take cover behind the same box as one of the droids, you can actually vault over it and execute them by pressing the jump button.

Climb back up and return to the crucified combat suit. Aim for the winch holding the cross up and shoot it down. Interact with the combat suit to extract its power cell. Now continue to the right and insert the power cell into the security panel. Now that the gun is powered again, you can trigger the motion sensor, which endangers your pilot and allows you to unlock your Camouflage System in your operating system. After you've done so, take a few steps back until the security system resets. Now wait for the motion sensor to swivel all the way to the right, cloak in the middle ground, and wait for its beam to pass you. Then move right and use the security card on the elevator control panel to leave the cave and unlock...

Allegory Escape the cave.
Domestic Testing
In the next area you'll encounter a bunch of security droids right at the start. Take them out and remember you don't really need cover anymore as you can now simply cloak to gain the same effect. Once you've taken care of them, move right and interact with the comm console next to the elevator.

After some dialogue and another encounter with the Caretaker (the creepy figure from before), you'll eventually run out of dialogue options as you can't consent to the testing process yet. Once the dialogue ends, immediately cloak. The security droid will assume a malfunction and try to activate the diagnostics system. The console shorts out though and he returns to being dormant. Shoot the ceiling panel that has come lose and interact with the cable that dropped from it to repower the console. Talk to the comm again, deny compliance once more, and immediately cloak again - this time the security droid will unlock the diagnostics area. Head all the way to the right and examine the human body on the last cross. Return to the comm console and confront the Administrator with the appropriate dialogue option. Finally he's able to convince you to submit to the testing and you can enter the elevator.

Welcome to the domestic testing area! Enter the house to the left. After meeting your new owner pick up a plastic shoe cover from the box by the door. Go upstairs to confront the first of the eight tests. Put the plastic shoe cover on the scanner, activate the comm, and finish the test - as the scanner won't pick up any dust you're awarded your first merit point. Now pick up the plastic shoe cover again (you won't need it anymore, but it's important to actually remove it). Enter the room to the right and pick up the empty glass jar there.

Then return downstairs to the kitchen and interact with the comm. You'll be instructed in your next test and the grocery store will be unlocked. Let's head there right now - but first pick up the plastic flowers from the kitchen table and put them in the vase in the living room on your way out.

On your way to the grocery store - just move right - you'll encounter more security droids. Kill them (obviously part of the daily chores of any manservant). The store has no power, so open the fuse box there in order to notice a missing wire. Shoot the glass pane on the ceiling to the right - and while you're at it, shoot the ugly slug that was hiding behind it! You can't kill it (yet), but hurt it in order to gather some of its slime in your glass jar. Also pick up the gold coin dropped by the dead body.

Go back left and use the elevator to the next level. While the civic testing area is still unpowered, there's stuff to be done here. For one thing, immediately go left until you find a fungus. Pour the slime from the jar on it to trigger its defense system... and the defense system of all of its brethren. You may ask yourself why you'd want to do this, but you'll find out pretty soon - for one thing it allows you to unlock the next achievement: Stand next to the fungus and constantly move slightly to the left and right in order to keep triggering it. The spores will slowly erode your shield and life support, eventually killing you - and thus unlocking...

Fungicide I couldn't escape!

Since the game saved immediately after you activated the fungI's defenses, there's no backtracking involved. Now continue to the right until you enter a workshop. On the wall is the first log in the form of a note (Written Notice to Maintenance Employee). Pick up the large wire cutters and the rusted tire iron, and use the gold coin on the workbench to turn it into a gold wire. You probably already know what to do now - return to the grocery store one level below and fix the fuse box with the gold wire. Shoot the now lit lamp in order to drive off the slug. This leaves you with the corpse's severed hand and head - pick up both. Return to your owner's home and put the head on the kitchen table. Talk to the comm, finish the test and gain your second merit point. Now go upstairs and use the hand on the scanner to gain access to the maintenance shaft above.

As you pass (or shoot, as you prefer) the fungus it releases its coroding spores, collapsing the tube behind it, which will be relevant later on. For now move on to the right until you find a computer terminal. Interact with it and read up on the requirements for the "Beautification" test. Since we don't have time to wait for an appropriate season to come around, cut the networking wire on the machine using your wire cutters. This will then allow you to manually set the season to winter on the computer (again in the "Beautification" section). Continue towards the right and pick up the super conductive fluid and check out the note (Mainboard Maintenance Note) which explains its use. Continue further to the right and activate the generator, thus finally powering the civic testing area. Speaking of which, use the severed hand on the hand scanner to the right to unlock a handy shortcut for later.

Now exit the maintenance shaft the way you entered, through the ladder to the far left. Use the comm console to start the next test. You have to pacify the baby without touching it (and no, shooting it won't work - yes, it's everyone's first idea), so immediately move to the left, interact with the comm from your first test and "finish" it again. Since you (hopefully) removed the shoe cover before, the scanner will now pick up dust and fail the test - but as it turns out the respective vacuum tube collapsed over the crib, thus silencing the baby for you. Merit point awarded - you monster! Now move downstairs to the living room and finish the beautification test through the comm console, which awards you your fourth merit point, thus completing domestic testing and unlocking...

Domesticated Complete all domestic tests.
Civic Testing
Use the elevator to return to the now powered and fully unlocked civic testing area. Time to explore! Move all the way to the left where you'll find a hand scanner inside a house - yet another welcome occasion to use that severed human hand you keep carrying around. Climb down the ladder to another part of the maintenance shaft. On your way left you'll find another note (Air Ducts Note). Climb up the next ladder to encounter the Caretaker once more. After your conversation he will unleash more security droids on you - but these ones are tougher and will require more rapid stopping power. Unlock the Power Transfer Bypass in your operating system when prompted to do so and finish off the droid approaching you.

What now follows is probably the hardest achievement in the game. If you don't care about achievements you can simply take care of the six droids patrolling to the right any way you like. Otherwise you'll have to off them all within seconds of each other to unlock this achievement. I found this easier to achieve using keyboard and mouse as this allows you to maintain a steadier firing angle. I recorded this video of a successful attempt to give you an idea on how to achieve it...

Should you fail (the last robot on the right is prone to enter cover randomly) immediately return to the main menu and reload your game. Don't proceed any further to the right or your game will save and you'll have missed your chance for this playthrough to unlock...

Military Machine 6 feet under.

Now that that's taken care of, pick up the enhanced power cell from the generator on the right and read the note next to it (Power Cell Note). Then shoot down the stuck ladder and climb up. After the super-short platforming intermission run to the right until you fall off, landing on a huge spool of luminescent wire and collapsing the floor. Once you're back up use your wire cutter to cut off a moderate length of wire from the spool. Start by connecting the wire to the merry-go-round on the left. Then use the tire iron to remove the wheel from the car to the right and attach the other end of the wire to that. Use the comm next to the car... and take the time to ridicule such primitve technology (relevant for the next achievement)! After that you can finish the test (interact with the driver after you've repaired the car to talk to him), actually awarding you two merit points at once. Move right and talk to the old lady, directing her to the playground. Failing this test should now unlock...

Doesn't Learn Kids these days...

To actually be able to finish the test, move past the cars and climb down the ladder you unlocked from the maintenance shaft. Insert the enhanced power cell into the power generator and return to the old lady. Starting the test will lead to her crashing into the first car right away, cutting her loose from her track. Simply pick her up and carry her past the cars to unlock your seventh merit point - only one more to go, right? Now that you've helped all the people in the civic testing area they're all gathered at the party in the house to the far left. Interact with the comm console to start your final test... and fail miserably as you lack the ability to lie. Pick up the keycard of the dead scientist hanging from the vacuum tube and leave the house. The Caretaker is waiting for you. While he is surprisingly helpful for a change, he'll still send another wave of security droids after you. Take care of them as you move towards the far right. Once there simply use the keycard on the ID tag reader to gain access to the staff elevator further to the right.
The Mainframe
Once you've arrived on the lower level, let's take a quick break and go torture some slugs now that you're actually around them! Switch to your flashlight (as opposed to your laser sight) and shine it at the slug on the ceiling to your right. It'll run off, so keep chasing it until it gets stuck on another slug. After shining your flashlight on it for a while (you can take a few hits from the other slug, no need to worry), you'll have proven yourself to be worthy of unlocking...

Sadistic Light 'em up.

After that, you're free to shoot any slugs you encounter. They shouldn't pose a big threat anyway. Now return to the left until you enter a room with several monitors. Read the personal data assistant lying on a table there (Scavenger's PDA), and most importantly its last entry. This prompts you to continue to the right. In the laboratory pick up the two test tubes and examine the computer terminal (Chemical Safety Email). On your way through the breakroom also pick up the kitchen knife. After that you enter a flooded room with broken aquariums. Find the spot the scavenger described in his entry and pour out the super conductive fluid there. The missing circuit board will light up. Take it and return it to the local mainframe in the room with the turbines, which will initiate a conversation.

The next achievement is time critical: As soon as the dialogue with the Administrator ends, immediately interact with the button that pops up to your right and immediately react to the button prompt (spacebar for mouse/keyboard). If you were fast enough, you'll unlock...

Tin Man You never even gave it a second thought...

Venture a little to the left and you'll find the Caretaker has another cross. Beneath it you'll find another empty glass jar. Bring it to the breakroom and put it in the beverage machine. Then move on to the room with the aquariums and read the now powered information panels on them (Hive Slug File and Jaw Fish File). As you long as you haven't missed any logs (and if you've been following this guide you shouldn't have), you'll now unlock...

Diag-Gnostic Collect all logs.

(NOTE: This achievement actually unlocked for me after the Hive Slug File without having read the Jaw Fish File. Since this might be due to a bug that'll get fixed in the future and for the sake of completeness, I decided to show all eight logs. See the Appendix for screenshots of their locations.)

Return to the elevators and take the right one down. Set the filled up broken glass jar underneath the tiny glowing insects. Near the water you'll find a wooden board. Put the jar with the insects on it. As soon as you have kicked the board out on the water, draw your pistol and get ready to shoot!

If you manage to take down the jaw fish on his first jump, you'll have met the requirement this next achievement. There are some issues with mouse/keyboard controls here sometimes as you start out aiming at the floor, but it can be done - nonetheless you might find using a gamepad easier. Either way you'll hopefully manage to unlock...

In a Barrel Nice reflexes!

Now that it's safe to enter the water venture to the right until you come upon another mainframe terminal. Networking with it is enough to drain the local floor. After that return to the dead fish and gut it using the kitchen knife. Ride the elevator to the left back up and go to the laboratory. There pour the fish guts in the detergent slot and pull the shower handle to cover yourself in sticky fish mucus. (As the game won't present you with another opportunity to shower off, that's a mental image to keep in mind until the end of the game.)

Return below and ride the elevator on the right further down. It's safe to enter the water as the other jaw fish now considers you its mate. Proceed to the mainframe and interact with it to drain this floor as well (this button won't work for the Tin Man achievement by the way). Once the deed is done, muster up any mercy you may have left and shoot the miserable jaw fish - in order to unlock...

Consider That a Divorce It's better to have loved and lost...

Taking the next elevator down you'll encounter the Hive Slug Queen (an ideal opportunity for "yo mama" jokes). Draw your pistol and start shooting her eggs. As soon as you've smashed all nine of them she'll cause a minor earthquake and send out more slugs to scavenge for food. Go one floor up and pour one of the reactants (doesn't matter which one) on the fungus. After the short cutscene continue up another floor and pour the other reactant into the broken water pipe on the right. After enjoying yet another short cutscene you'll unlock...

Regicide Make a royal mess.
The Confrontation
Behind the remains of the Hive Slug Queen you'll finally come upon the mainframe. Talk to the Administrator and he'll unlock the mainframe access terminal for you. Interact with it and... well, doesn't matter since the Caretaker will ruin any plans you might have had anyway. After the ambush enter the security droid repair bay by interacting with it. Unfortunately this gives the Caretaker the opportunity to execute the final part of his plan. Draw your sidearm as soon as you exit the repair bay and shoot the Caretaker without hesitation. If you've been fast enough you'll unlock...

Ask Questions Later Repair Reaper.

Follow the trail of coolant that the Cartaker is leaking back upstairs. You'll encounter security droids on the next two floors so be prepared to fight. You'll encounter the Caretaker again on the testing floor where he opens up another ladder. Climb up and keep following his trail. Eventually he'll confront you... and it's boss battle time!

The fight shouldn't be too hard as it's rather easy to dodge and confuse him by jumping over him. He's not always susceptible to attack, but just keep shooting him whenever you have the chance to slowly erode his health. As soon as his health is depleted he'll disappear and recharge himself on the generator in the center. Since he is invulnerable during this you need to take out the generator parts in the top left and top right corner. As this requires two rounds of fighting, the third takedown should be the final one. Then it's up to you to decide the final fate of the Caretaker.

Should you decide to shoot him you'll unlock...

Face-Off Evaluation: Complete

If you just leave him and exit the area you'll unlock...

Merciful Evaluation: Pending...

IMPORTANT: Do not try to savescum these achievements. While the game saves immediately after the fight and allows you to unlock Face-Off before it saves again, the Caretaker won't spawn if you reload the game at this point thus leaving you unable to unlock either achievement. To unlock both you'll actually have to play the game twice. (Some people report issues with this set of achievements. Make sure you play the game on separate save slots when you go for the second achievement, as there might be a bug related to this.)

You'll automatically return to the house of your final civic test. Initiate testing again and use your newfound ability to lie - but only once. While you are given the option to lie again on the second question, you should choose not to do so in order to unlock...

On Second Thought... Come clean.

... after that lie away as much as you like. Finishing the final test grants you the eighth and final merit point, thus clearing you for higher level access. This unlocks...

Validated Complete your evaluation.

Take the final elevator up. Talk to the mainframe AI and enter the medical area, which will unlock...

If you copy your save file before climbing the 3 sets of stairs, before the final boss fight, and paste it in another folder, you can then beat the game having picked 1 achievement after the fight. Then paste back over your completed game file with the pre-boss fight save file. Re-defeat the boss and pick the other achievement choice. You'll earn it. Saves having to re-play the entire game!

This is a great guide, very thorough and comprehensive! If it weren't for this guide, there would be parts of the game where i'd be stuck trying to frustratingly come up with a solution..
