Before we start, yes I understand this game is free if you own Skyrim, but free of cost doesn't mean free of criticism because what this game lacks in cost in money it costs in time and that's what this review is about. That and this game is going to be compared to Skyrim because unfortunately it keeps most of Skyrims weaknesses while lacking many of it's strenghts. First I'll get to the good stuff. The story is fantastic and light years ahead of anything Bethesda, and many other studios, has ever put out. The characters, the writing, the overall tale it tells are top notch. The problem is that it would have worked better as a novel because as a game it's a mess.
I'll start with technical issues. You better have patience to play this game because I experienced frequent crashing, tons of audio visual glitches, quests where everything just stopped working requiring a reload and a major pain of a bug where whenever time slowed down for any reason, I had to close the entire game and reboot it. Then there's the new character development system. Where in Skyrim you get better by doing things, this game uses a more traditional experience point and level up system that just doesn't work here. That and most of the skills are useless. Rhetoric barely comes up in the game, sleight of hand is useless, and stealth is flat out broken. Even at 100 plus modifiers I'd still get caught sneaking by rats with their backs to me. It just doesn't work. Exploration isn't much fun either. Despite being open world the design is very linear. You can go to many places before you're supposed to, but there's little reason to do so as you probably will be sent there later for a quest and you'll have to do it all over again. Then there's the issue that since the game doesn't use dynamic levelling, going to far off the rails will likely just result in death. The voice work is decent in most areas, but it keeps that awful barking npcs that repeat the same lines every time you get near them and many don't make any sense. There's also no consistency to the game world. Need a bed to rest in? Sometimes you can and sometimes you can't. I get that beds that are owned can't be used but why in a dungeon I've cleared is there no way to use a bed? That kind of inconsistency is throughout the game. Things you can do and use in one place, you can't in others and it just leads to frustration. The world map in game is rubbish and often has roads in the wrong places, shows connecting areas where in game they're blocked forcing you to burn a teleport scroll or take a massive walk because there's no fast travel. I get the idea behind it, but in practice not having the option makes many quests a slog, especially when you're going to the same long distance places multiple times. Then there are things in the game that flat out make no sense like having mutliple houses in a game where you can't play after the ending. It's not even useful for storage since there are storage chests all over the place where you can keep all your stuff.
I hate giving something like this a negative review, but I'm an honest person and I don't think this game is worth the 85+ hours it demands to enjoy the story fully so I have to say that. It's a valiant attempt, but I would rather have read the story than play the game, but this is Steam, not a bookstore so it feels like a lot of time wasted because of poor design choices and technical problems.

I hate it because it was one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had, and I’m sure it’ll be years before I find anything that can compare to what Enderal gave me. The emotional rollercoaster, the character development, the emotional depth, the themes it touches on that make it feel so personal, and the lore "chef kiss". This is a hidden gem that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.
