I like the music, it compliments the somewhat subtle homoerotic undertones. The smooth and calming music flows forward without any cuts to hint that the transition between spanking and homoeroticism is almost fluid and could carry over to a possible opening up between these two characters later one, despite the obvious straight mentality that the "the thief" and "the punisher/executioner" have.
What do the characters symbolize? The Thief could very symbolize childhood innocence towards himself and his inner sexuality. His act of stealing money by pretending to be some one that he is not is actually a very deep symbolic description of those who have to hide themselves and their sexuality from the world, the actual act of stealing is his repressed side coming out in a violent and destructive manner, hurting others and society similar to how Foucault believes happens in the modern world (by calling his friend and bragging about it is his silent cry for help, similar as to how a man in depression will lash out, hoping that someone will save him, also ironically drawing distance from himself and others).
Now this is where the clip take a broad statement that I am having trouble figuring out. The punisher/executioner could very well be either a strong representation of society's view on sexuality or a representative figure of either sexual liberation or an actual shadow/other of the beneficial side of his sexuality, trying to show that his discovery of his sexuality would actually bring him happiness and not pain.
If we look at The Executioner aspect (the aspect that the man with the belt is a symbol of society) than we can see a great disgust with modern society's treatment of sexuality. The man, upon learning of The Thief's stealing caused by his repression, chooses to punishes The Thief instead of treating or caring for him for his "criminal reportable" offense. He toys with The Thief before he tells him of his punishment, similar as to how a man can be arrested and be kept detained before he goes to court. Meanwhile the clip points out an even more disgusting feature of The Executioner aspect: the entire time, he is shirtless.
What does this mean? The director points out that for The Thief's crimes, society itself is also guilty. Not only does The Executioner shirtlessness points out that in modern society that condemns sexuality, we also promote it blatantly in advertisements, porn, and almost every aspect of our lives, causing confusion and angst in today's youth. We can even go as far as saying that what the director means is that every person in society is in some sense not always in the social conformity, and that people will always have some sexual aspect of themselves that is not socially acceptable (as The Thief's nature points out, by trying to fit into a standard people will inevitable cause pain in both themselves and those around them).
Since as I mention the act of spanking is in itself a homoerotic action, than we can know that the symbolism here is that even the act of punishing someone for their sexuality brings up a somewhat devastating sexual act on the social norm--even in punishment we see traces of sexuality, which the social norm would say shouldn't be there. Here, the director makes a great humanistic expression that we can never fully repress our sexual nature, and that society should cast away its judgements and punishments about sexuality. Instead, embracing it in order to bring happiness and a more progressive society.
But if we look at The Punisher aspect (where the man with the belt is a sexual liberator), we see something entirely different. Upon hearing The Thief's bragging, he recognizes the repressed cry for help, and choose to punish The Thief to bring liberation. By bending The Thief over and committing the homoerotic act of whipping punishment, he shows through the hidden sexual nature of The Thief. Subconsciously, he presents an act that is subtly sexual in nature, and what will surprise The Thief is that he enjoys it. He would, metaphorically speaking, find out that what he thought would bring him pain instead brings him pleasure.
Inevitable he would recognize the act as sexual and will compare the punishment experience with every aspect of his sexuality, gradually loosing himself up to the idea that sexuality would, instead of pain, bring happiness to him. He will in the end change his position that his sexuality will bring harm to himself to the (true) idea that it will bring only happiness to him.
Something to note is that in both cases of The Punisher/Executioner aspects is that The Man With The Belt calls his mother, who he first brings with a peaceful idea of sexual punishment but instead she suggests the more violent whipping. Anyone with a brain can figure out that this is a subversion of the Oedipus Complex, The Electra Complex. Where, the father figure being the Man With The Belt, and the mother being the mother. Here, the Mother is a figure with whom is associated with violence, and The Father being the one who the son commits the sexual act with. But since the spanking is the Mothers idea and yet the Father carries it out, what we have here is a subversion of the subversion: The Father and The Mother who are both separate, are also the same person. Since The Thief's sexuality is muddled, both his father and mother have become one person in his mind, both of them he wants to murder, and both of them he wants to have sex with.
Ultimately, since the subversion happens on more toward The Electra Complex instead of the Oedipus Complex, I would have to say that it is possible that the two men may perhaps have their sexuality leaning more on the Homosexual aspects than any straight aspects. Which is shocking, the director is implying that these by the books, straight as can be white dudes may be homosexuals! Of course I may be reaching, but what audacity would it take for a director to show two perfect straight men by our social standards, and then spit on the face of our preconceptions by showing they may actually be homosexuals! Again, I of course could be misreading and misinterpreting, since the blatant nature of their straightness is so almost painfully obvious, but as far as we know, they do show signs of homosexuality, but if they truly commit to that nature would require the viewing of the whole movie, or more intelligent film scholars in future generations.
I hope that today's and tomorrows generations can all see this clip and be reinvigorated by it. The director's call for sexual liberation is so heartbreakingly honest that it almost brings tears to my eyes. Perhaps one day we can stand by the light of our sexually invigorated sun, be bathed in its light, and take in this clips message as one of the most important statements that was ever made in our time.
