if you know you love farm sims youll definitely have fun with staxel and all its charms, it does manage to strike the balance between super chill and always something fun you could occupy yourself with. however dont come into this expecting the quality and extensive depth of stardew valley etc

the atmosphere, art, music and customisation freedom are all very charming. i had a friend pass out mid conversation to the calming music lol. there's also great tiny little touches in the game that makes it feel even more interesting (eg only certain bugs are out during certain weather! didnt expect that)

there's definitely things id recommend fixing however. as the game is at the moment, i cant say youll feel very excited by the challenge of micromanagement in other farm sims like harvest moon/stardew, as well as the sparse amount/depth of different areas/activities

small changes like: the font choice, NPC quests that ask for items that they themselves sell, balancing the almost god mode you have as a player (eg basic tool durability, fall damage, access to a lot of things immediately. but that may just be my personal preference, but sometimes its also just hilarious being able to grief NPC buildings), better storage options (PLEASE, having to manually place things on shelves that take up alot of space is quite inconvenient), more engaging delivery of quests/dialogue/guides (it gets very text dense in your journal), more consistent spawn rates of bugs (maybe just me, ive found like tens of queen bees and maybe 5 worker bees so far) and more personality and story for each NPC to uncover (theres not really any incentive for me to be emotionally invested and interested in the characters)

those are the only genuine criticisms i have for the game as of now. obviously there's plenty more that could be added to the game in terms of areas for exploration, content and items. im not sure how engaging it will continue to be once i put in more hours considering ive explored everywhere on the island itself (not even much, in games like harvest moon/stardew there are only a handful of areas and activities but they are extremely extensive with things to discover). hopefully in the future we will receive updates for those.

I'll be honest, the biggest issues for me was the field of vision and combat direction.

If you're personally abit sensitive to motion sickness, the FOV made my eyes/brain hurt after about 10-20 minutes (I did try my best to adjust settings to alleviate it) and made playing the game disorienting and I had to stop before an hour.

Secondly I'm not too sure why they decided to not include enemy health bars and lock on. I'm not a big player of hack and slash games aside from some Devil May Cry so maybe the lack of health bars is normal, but the lack of lock on was quite frustrating to experience.

That in combination with the fact a lot of the enemies are the same color scheme as the environment made combat even more disorienting and confusing at best to deal with.

I wanted to play more and give it a more fair go but I physically cannot but there's also not much that makes me want to continue playing.

TLDR There's no indicator lock of enemies and nothing to easily distinguish them from the environment so it's abit of a disorienting mess. If youre motion sickness sensitive you probably won't be able to play for more than an hour at a time.

I really wanted to enjoy this game and absolutely love the aesthetic/unapologetic campiness of gore and booba but I was too busy being disorientated and frustrated to even care about hot demons with their titties out. I appreciate and can see all the hard work the developers put into this game and hope they'll continue to try to improve with their future endeavours but there's definitely alot of different aspects that can be refined. I hate to give it a negative rating because of this but I'm just indifferent to it at best.

ive wanted the game for ages and if youre able to grab it while its on sale currently, its a steal.

if you're a fan of monster hunter or want an intro to souls-like games this is a good choice.
the customisation is super fun and creative and the unique flexability in playstyles is also great for people who want to try abit of everything/weird builds.

coming from a monster hunter fan whos never played the souls games and almost ripped my controller apart at bloodborne this is still fun, sometimes challenging but much more forgiving, and just a generally addictive experience.

the amount of different playstyles you can use to beat the game is expansive, if you dont like heavy weapons or slow mobility you can build more towards speed and dodging (which i reckon is way more fun than standing still and bashing people)
as with any souls-like game bosses/places will require patience and observation, but i have at no point felt the same frustration i felt trying to get into bloodborne to which i just gave up out of impatience/frustration. while you will be challenged it definitely feels rewarding and not as punishing as souls games.

overall would defs recommend for anyone who's into souls/monster hunter type gameplay but isn't necessarily a master at them (even better if you are tho), intensive character customisation, and great character, armor/weapon and environment design (for fellow art sluts)

The aesthetics and concept of this game is absolutely killer and I freaking love it, that aside the game has its downs

PROS:
- Amazing art, music, writing, characters, voice acting and general atmosphere
- Concept is super cool!
- Mesh of artistic mediums (pixel, manga, animation) is very seamless and well intergrated
- Doesn't take itself seriously and is hilarious
- Generally a really chill but still stimulating game to just sit down and play after a stressful day
- Easy to follow and streamlined story line
- Very beginner friendly combat system if you've never played beat em up games
- For people very used to beat em up games there's a lot of variety in combos and weird shenanigans you can try combat wise
- There's a lot to explore and discover for yourself in the game
- Two very different combat modes to try (Kyoko vs Misako)

CONS:
- BIGGEST set back was the lack of controls customisation/intergration.
      1. If you play with keyboard you can't customise the controls to what suits you best and imo the default is very clunky and weird.
      2. If you play with a controller on an automatic profile the game automatically detects it as Player 2, so you literally have to go and bind EVERY BUTTON to its keyboard equivalent just to play with only one person.
- For beginners, the lack of healing items in normal mode can become annoying possibly
- Some story quest parts (eg getting mall cop's keys) are really nonsensical and just made me ?xd
- Certain parts of the game require platforming in a 3D environment, which really throws you off because its a 2D game 90% of the other time and no sense of dimension makes sense at that point
- Kinda short game

Overall, I'd say if this style and concept is something you like already, you should get this game on sale, whether or not you've played this genre before! It's really good but due to how stupid the control bindings and muck around is in order to even play the game I wouldn't consider it for the full price. (If that's fixed in the future definitely worth the money though, but that one thing is single handedly bad enough)

bought the game after seeing some gameplay and it was on sale, didnt expect much

but i was blown out of the water with how stunning the aesthetic, writing, concepts and music was, everything was simply incredible to experience and even though i usually cant sit through dialogue heavy games like these, the writers did an amazing job and has my personal stamp of ADD-proof approval.

if you the love cyber punk/retro/post dystopian aesthetic and goofy but personally touching and relatable stories you gotta get the game and support the wonderful people behind this masterpiece
