Not very beginner friendly compared to its successor. A scout can disorient you and cause your camera to sway from right-to-left and vise-versa, a medic can poison you, a sticky-trap that you cannot even see can lessen your movement speed, and some small contraption can start shooting spikes at a fast rate of fire? From mechanics that aren't explained to sometimes the UI not displaying relevant information, TFC is a more frustrating game to engage with, often making you wonder how exactly you got fragged and by whom. I don't recommend it.

I figured this would be a cool game to check out since I was itching for a Shadow of The Colossus-ish game with critical thinking and action; however, those expectations were not met.

It's not very beginner friendly. Unless you had experience from one of the previous titles, the game doesn't hold your hand. There is the basic tutorial, but it only gives you just the bare minimum before sending you off.

There is no health indicators aside from a person telling you to "finish it off" and it's visibly on its last legs. The mission tells you to go kill X monster but only gives you a vague image of what it looks like, at times the game being at odds displaying the information to the player. There's also (at least that I couldn't find) no way to tell how much time you have left, only being given a warning when you're at the final 10 or 5 minutes, and if it turns out you were fighting the wrong monster the entire time your run is screwed. More on this later.

It doesn't help that the monsters are major damage sponges and there's no feeling of impact when you manage to land hits on them. It feels like "okay, I'm dealing damage...why isn't this thing hurting?" There's no feedback that you're even denting the monster until it gets on its last legs.

To add salt to the injury, combat feels sluggish and slow. When you initiate an attack, you're locked into the animation unless the boss breaks it. This makes it especially frustrating because it's like the controls are constantly fighting with you, with your character at times not aiming where you were directing with the thumb stick. This kills fluidity in battle and makes it impossible to avoid deadly blows, not helped by the fact that combat can get very noisy.

When I and another user were doing a mission to take down a boss, it had given a vague image and name of what was expected to be fought. So we load into the mission and check the mini-map. There were two visible bosses and one listed as a question mark (?), so we tracked it down and engaged with it. Although its appearance was contrary to the vague image, given previous experience in video games we had figured that the boss marked as a question mark on the mini-map was what was supposed to be hunted. After finally taking down the boss and feeling accomplished for a few seconds, we were left with confusion...why didn't the mission end? As it turned out, we had fought the wrong boss entirely. With what time we had left, we scrambled to find the correct boss and just barely managed to take it down within the time limit.

If you have previous experience in the series, you might be quick on the uptake; however, if you're a complete newbie to the series (such as myself, I never played a Monster Hunter game before this) then you're going to have a frustrating and somewhat miserable experience.

Thanx for reading.

The game gives you some basic motivation to play it- some baddies arrived that are disrupting the peace of the world and our main heroine is sent out to stop them.

It would be fine if it were not for the technical issues. The Definitive Edition rarely launches for some reason. It'll just sit in the background and not do anything for minutes on-end. When you do get to play the actual game, items including 1-ups, health and etc. spawn in the ground. This Definitive Edition also comes with the Classic Edition which does not have this issue.

The game controls fine. The first boss had a random yet basic pattern to it. The game utilizes only the one and same stills as presented on the title screen for each character, with no variations for facial expressions nor poses depending on what a character is saying.

It would probably be a cool and fun game if it only functioned like it probably should.

Seeing that it was a "horror adventure game" I was expecting something somewhat akin to Doki Doki Literature Club. However, with the short runtime (roughly 20 minutes, less if you know what to do) it doesn't build up enough time for it.

What you're supposed to do isn't super clear so you resort to pressing the action button and moving around the place in hopes of triggering something, and certain areas are not super clear about the path you're supposed to take. As an example: when you go to take the trash out, there's no indicator of how much you're supposed to take out. You see earlier that there's a trash bin, but trying to go to it via the back door of the diner has you encounter an invisible wall.

What doesn't help is the player has no strafing, there is only tank controls. Moving the camera up and down is also very slow (much slower than moving right-to-left and vise-versa) and the jump button is completely pointless. It's as just pointless as the save feature this game has.

The last (and final) issue is the performance of the game. For what seems like a simplistic game it has frequent dips in frame rates. It's either the 3d models used in the game are higher-poly than they should be or it's an engine issue. It's completely linear btw, no more than 1 ending.

For 2/3 of $1 USD I probably had my expectations a bit higher than I should have had then.

If you liked Lethal Company, you'll most likely enjoy this one. That's because it's similar to the Spider-Man A pointing towards Spider-Man B and vise-versa meme.

Rather than taking place in space, it takes place (as the store page described) in a medieval setting, and that in my opinion works better to it's advantage. In L.C. there's a bunch of alien-like creatures and whatnot throughout the randomly generated facilities, whereas here the monsters are baked into the world and feel like they actually belong there. (TL;DR everything in the game makes more sense thematically.)

Another advantage is the ability to revive teammates who succumbed to a monster or even death pit. It does have a cost to them, but it feels good to know your friend(s) have at least a chance to rejoin the fun. The only downside's that you require a mask if you don't have a body or you require the player's body to be able to revive them.

One of the downsides (similar to L.C.) is that PILGRIM is not super clear on what certain things do and don't. For example, you cannot pick up an item in an inventory slot unless you scroll to an open one first, whereas in L.C. you just have to pickup the item and it'll automatically move to an open slot.

Even though I had liked this more than L.C., I submitted for a refund. It's a friends game and relies on friends to play and enjoy it like L.C., and I did not want it to collect dust in my library like it's source of inspiration.

I can recommend this game only to those who either a) enjoyed L.C. and are looking for something fresher, or b) looking to play with friends long-term.

Thanx for reading. Peace.

Attempting to play with friends simply does not work. Either the connection keeps failing or it's so bugged it kicks everyone but the host out. If you want to play with friends, there's other online games that at least allow you to connect to a server together.

What Balan Wonderworld wish it could be

With a more serious review, the defining trait of this game is charm. It's a simple game that doesn't have have an overarching story. You collect points by flying through objects and can do tricks for even more points. You then use said points to break these flying orb-things to retrieve the items you had initially lost. At each checkpoint you receive a score then move onto the boss.

It's really as simple as that and it really works to it's advantage in my opinion. It's not requiring you to be a gaming master to play it- it just sets the stage for anyone to pickup and have fun with.

100% recommend.

Diablo but with furry people.

Alright alright, for a more serious review, the game's fun, especially with friends. It's got a learning curve to it but that increases it's longevity. There's classes in the game with varying weapons to choose from, combat is flows pretty nicely and rewards you for doing well. My only gripe is the lack of characterization with the NPCs you talk with and get quests from. That last bit was stupid. Please disregard.

My ACTUAL biggest gripe is in regards to the dungeons: there are no checkpoints within the dungeons. There are items to revive your character, but (at the point I am in ATLYSS) you can only get them through quests; otherwise, you have to start from the very beginning and slog to get back to where you had progressed. It does not help that if you're playing singleplayer or your party wiped, enemies regain health at a slow-ish pace. Normally this would not be an issue early on in the dungeons, but when you're nearing the end or the boss itself, it nearly undoes the damage / progress you had made. Luckily wipes don't restart the arena.

The lack of checkpoints almost cripples the game due to how grindy the later dungeons are. They don't need to be super plentiful, but enough that you don't have to slog too far from where you were.

Other than that, this is an easy recommend.

A tutorial that treats you like an idiot, unbalanced online matches, you cannot choose what gamemode you want to play, teams that do not protect the healer / medic, cannot communicate via text chat until a certain level and characters are locked until you "complete challenges".

This was the "TF2 killer"? Really?

TellTale's final game before they truly tried to emulate the formula of TWD:S1 in vain succession. The Wolf Among Us is better than the titles that they had released after it, and I'm looking forward to it's sequel game. Story is good and the soundtrack is great.
