This guide is a list of all the people met (or mentioned) in Tokyo Dark. Whilst there are two wikis (http://tokyodark.wikia.com/wiki/Tokyo_Dark) and (https://tokyodark.gamepedia.com/Tokyo_Dark_Wiki), they haven't been updated for over a year, and contain no details.

Thus this guide was born.

This guide contains spoilers and conjecture too...

Detective Itō Ayami
Itō (Japanese for string or thread) is a female (probably mid to late 20's) of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department Criminal Investigation Bureau 4th division, and by all accounts is the only female detective there. Has only been there a few years.

Lives in Shinagawa. Parents may have died (according to the dream version of Tanaka)

Given "space" by making sure that her office is no more than a broom cupboard at the far end of the fourth floor offices. She still hasn't unpacked all her belongings from when she moved in.

Generally feels under-appreciated despite her work (by all accounts she is very good at her job).

Partners (and lives with) Detective Tanaka Kazuki. She feels that she is lucky to get an appartment that allows pets (otherwise she would be regularly visiting a cat cafe).

She obviously loves Tanaka, but isn't beyond sacrficing him to save the world...

Extremely fond of cat themed pancakes. And octopus. And ramen.

Can be come insane, corrupt, murderous and revengeful.

Quite ironic that both she and Ruby/Reina suffer the same type of problems - Ito from her collegues and Reina from everyone. According to The Collector, Ayami pities and hates Reina in equal measure.
Detective Tanaka Kazuki
Male, 29. Homocide detective at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department Criminal Investigation Bureau 4th division.

Has no problem arguing with Superintendent Yukimura over police procedures and protocol.

Starts investigating Reina because he could see something strange about her (which makes you wonder whether he had contact with the mask before his untimely death), and most likely believing he could actually help her (by mis-interpreting Reina's problem).

Partners (in both official and unofficial capacities) with Ito.

Mother died when he was 15

Some people suggested that he and Ito weren't suitable and he should find a "normal" girl. Obviously he didn't follow their advice...

Murdered by Reina, and can additionally be killed by Ito
Saki Ishibashi
Hard working but gossipy desk clerk/receptionist at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department. Being in charge of the CCTV camera allows her to know everything that's going on.

Has worked with Ito for many years and they seem to be great friends, going as far as to cover Ito's tracks in the police storeroom, and doesn't believe she murdered Goto.

Can be made to get into trouble by deactivating the CCTV cameras.

Smitten with Officer Bando, with whom Ito acts as courier in delivering love-letters. Will go with him to the roof once said letter is delivered.
Superintendent Yukimura
Head of Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, and seems to be rather officious, no doubt because of the media circus and the phone calls from the Duty Chief, Chief and Mayor over the "incident".

Doesn't disagree that Ito has worked hard, but has no problem relegating her to vice and insurance fraud almost straight away (whether or not its due to external pressure is unknown, but he doesn't appear to have fought for Ito), as well as telling all other detectives what has happened. Whether it's to help his own case (he does clearly state that he will be in trouble too) or not is unknown.

Detective Taira
Detective Taira and Ito dislike each other. He is arrogant, condesending and patronising (Takashi deems it a "brash personality")

He has a girlfriend and is about to get married.

He is promoted to Ito's position after the incident, and delights in rubbing Ito's nose in it.

Ito states that he is a "rumour-spreading, brown-nosing, womaniser", although whether Ito is making this up or not (no other character confirms this) is unknown. Taira certainly has made his dislike for Ito clear (although its more likely due to feeling that he doesn't approve of women being in the job, rather than misogyny).

Does seem to take pleasue in arresting Ito

Detective Nitta
Current partners with Taika, although he has worked with Ito.

She was apparently surprised by his competancy (which makes you wonder whether Ito looks down on detectives too, which in turn would make her a bit of hypocrite)
Hostess of the Butterfly Club (Miho)
Attractive hostess of the Butterfly Club (goes by the name of Miho), she and Ito have a prickly relationship on account of the former seeing the police as being no better that the clients she has to deal with, but does at least somewhat help Ito.

Been working for around 2 years as a hostess at 4 different establishments.

She can admire how you deal with Goto, and may or may not take your advice when she states that she is moving.
Goto
Goto is a constant presence of the Butterfly Club, and is generally disliked by the Hostess for his ...behaviour

Likes taking schoolgirls to the sewer (probably the one to hang lighting in there to create a more "intimate" setting). Certainly likes Ito and is into bondage.

Feels that Tanaka's murder has made the sewers an even more exciting place, which Ito certainly doesn't appreciate.

Ito can make use of Goto's bondage rope to travel further in the sewers. He can also be murdered by Ito too - she may think it is justice, but as The Collector states, the rest of the city won't agree.
Daizo
Owner of a failed (and failing) restaurant. Is married and has a daughter, although they are seperated. Hasn't seen his daughter for a long while. Probable that his wife more or less forced him into opening the restaurant.

Has to pawn his wedding ring to pay the months rent.

At the least depressed, although more like severely depressed... Has tried to commit suicide at least once before (and can try again - only this time succeeding).

Can either hang onto the bar, mainly sentlemental reasons (and probably hoping his wife will return), or can sell up and join his brother.

Strangely, hasn't filed for divorce...
Warehouse worker Kobayashi
Young worker in an unknown warehouse, who's responsibilities are vague at best (sweeping here and there and keeping an eye on the bins outside).

Seems to be rather an idiot, and quite happy to mention Ito's (possible) drinking escapades to her fellow collegues. However, is knowledgable about pop culture.

Possibly rather taken with Ito
Reina/Ruby
Reina was the daughter of Hisako and was a small child when she was made to wear The Mask during the mass suicide of her parents cult, which gave her an attachment to The Dark.

Found in an orphanage by Higashi and possibly his wife, she was given the stage name of Ruby who became a one-hit pop idol.

With all the money gone from this song, Higashi started forcing Reina to go to "meetings" with other men.

Being mentally and most likely sexually abused, Reina decided to commit sucide in one of Higashi's rooms, by hanging herself, hoping it would help her finally to regain control and she would be able to get some peace.

Unfortunately, The Dark decided otherwise and bought her back to life (whether it is the original Reina or a copy from her original time in The Dark is unknown), whereupon The Collector visits her, telling her that only with The Mask can she return to The Dark (and possibly find peace)

This starts a search at all shrines with spelt "Kawana", leading to her death and subsequent resurrect again. The search for The Mask starts two months before Ito and Reina first meet, during which time, Reina serious injures Takada Isao, sets fire to a hall attached to a shrine and either kills (or places) dead cats in front of another shrine.

Before she died, she did like pizza. However, since being brought back to life, eating makes her sick.

She kills Tanaka hoping that he would be able to guide her to The Door, but unfortunately the idea fails.

At the end, she and Ito have a stand-off with the fate of both of them (and the world) resting on the decisions made by Ito

It should be noted that Reina can't be regarded as truely bad (and deserves a lot of sympathy) as all through her life she has suffered nothing but abuse at the hands of others (the girls in the ophanage and those in various agencies obviously didn't like her); her parents died in front of her; The Mask was taken from her and she suffered subsequent abuse afterwards.

She also suggests that she has been in The Dark multiple times, suggesting that she has died (and been resurrected) multiple times.

All of this does make Ito's Revenge ending rather hard-hearted
Hisako
Red-headed mother of Reina and member of Tokimassa's cult. Originally believes that Reina is pure and will save them, but does seem to have doubts (enough to visit her daughter before the final feast and give her an amulet).

May have been in a relationship with Tokimassa too...

Yuji
Member of Tokimassa's cult. Seen eating at the last feast.

Sees himself as impure and worthless.
Minoru
Member of Tokimassa's cult
Midori
Member of Tokimassa's cult. Seems to dislike Reina somewhat
Emiko
Daughter of Old Kawana Woman

Was working on a PhD until she was made to join Tokimassa's cult by her mother. Her children were taken away by her mother before the final meal, which she does find upsetting - if only because they can't be with her at the end.

Like her husband, she had a masters degree (in what is unknown)

It is implied that she poisoned everyone in the cult. Whether the cult leader was also poisoned or not as well is unknown.
Tokimassa (Shinji Umezawa)
Leader of a revived cult who states (and may or may not believe) that Reina would lead all their souls to the land of the kami and the cause of Reina's and by extension Ito's problems.

As the government was shutting down these cults, Tokimassa felt that the time was near, the cult commited mass suicide, likely caused by Emiko poisioning everyone during the last feast.

Tokimassa stated that he should be differently, so it is unknown whether he was also poisoned.

He most likely forced Reina to wear The Mask. She was the only survivor of the mass suicides

Whether or not he actually believed what he lectured is unknown - by all accounts it looks like it was just for power (and possible sexual reasons as well).

Officer Mori
In charge of the evidence room at the Tokyo police station. Tanaka did put in a good word for his promotion, but nothing came of it - it is implied that asking too many questions in regards to a case prevented it.

Doesn't like being in the basement during earthquakes.

Can be knocked out by Ito, and whilst he will cover for Ito for a while, may go with Taira to arrest her.

However, unlike Taira, he won't take any pleasure out of it.
The Collector
Possible shape-shifting god. Knows the Cat God (and doesn't particularly like him).

Will help people (once three crane motifs are placed outside his/her lift) with their most pressing problems, but with a high price : In return he/she wants their most treasured possesion.

Originally meeting Ito, he/she states that their talk pays half her debt to him. Susequent plays (of which they both remark), pays the debt in full.

Whether or not The Collector can be regarded as helping or hindering Ito is unknown...
The Historian Yasuhisa
Possibly a god or a being that slipped into our world from The Dark. Friends with The Collector. Also knows the Cat God

Like The Collector, is philosophical.

Apparently needs the return of a magazine "stolen" by Haruto, although whether he actually needs it, or whether it is just to help Ito is unknown.
Kasumi Mifune
Implied to be the new Yazkua leader in Akaba

Recently "bought" the Omega talent agency (with a high body count in addition to undisclosed debts), she is forthright with Ito and on a somewhat friendly basis.

However, she is not afraid to have Ito beaten and blackmailed (nor possibly having her murdered too) - the only thing stopping her from doing so is her love of cats.

Ito does get some measure of revenge on Kasumi, by not mentioning that Tomo can no longer eat raw fish...

Sachiko
Owner of a cat cafe (and not a cat themed cafe), she is heavily in debt to the Yakuka due to having numerous problems with the building owner and local officials when she first started.

It is implied that she does care deeply for her cats, but doesn't really realise the problems they cause for everyone else.

Helped by The Collector (gains a rare cat breed), but at the loss of an elderly pet cat.

The Cat God is not impressed with her.

It is implied that Kasumi eventually forces her out of business, most likely due to her debt.
Tomo
A cat belonging to Sachiko, who helps prevent Ito from being beaten by Kasumi's henchmen.

Poisoned (with laxatives) by Takumi because he was being kept awake for weeks at a time, during this time he has a tendency to "explode"... at both ends...

After recovering, tends to find that raw fish is rather... nauseating...

Kept by Kasumi and renamed Mr Marshmellow
Mai Kawana
Young daughter of Emiko and grand-daughter of the Old Kawana Woman, and raised by the latter after the death of her mother.

Has a brother.

Maid of the nearby Kawana shrine, she has been trained in spiritual purification techniques.

Doesn't agree with Ito that The Mask is dangerous, but does want to help her.

It is implied in some endings that she gets murdered.
Old Kawana Woman
Daughter of Emiko, grand-daughter of Mai and grand-son of Takashi

Already a member of Tokimassa's cult, she convinced her daughter and and her husband to join, which she deeply regrets.

She joined after her husband left her and she had lost her job, leaving her a single-parent trying to raise a daughter.

She tried to use The Mask to find Emiko and seek forgiveness, but to no end. She then gives The Mask to Ito in the hopes that it's effect will go in doing so. Unfortunately it doesn't.

A prickly character, she doesn't particularly care for ito, especially after the "incident", but does try to get her to see that The Mask needs to be destroyed.

It is implied that The Collector gave her The Mask

It is also implied in some endings that she is murdered, along with her grand-daughter

Takashi
Well respected owner of a Dojo, which trains police officers and selected members of the public.

Son of Emiko, he is disgusted at his parents dying for nothing, and effectively shields Mai from knowing anything about what happened.
Yumi
Downstairs "neighbour" of Ito and Tanaka, she appears to be deeply concered about both of them, going as far as wanting to cook for them, but tends to come around at inconvenient times.

After the "incident", she does suffer Ito's wrath for a short while (for which Ito does apologise).

Apparently likes unusual things in doughnuts and karoke...

It is possible that Yuri is a psychiatric nurse, although you only see her in that role in the Insane ending. However, she does say that Ito is her "special project", so it is possible that she has been told to keep on Ito (or takes it upon herself to do so) - after all, it Ito's pills in plain sight, it is quite possible that Yumi (if she is a nurse) knows what they are for.
Mina
Works at a cat themed shop, who manages to lose her favourite teddy bear (which results in her being unable to work due to the sad loss). Ito solves this by getting a replacement (soon to be named Belinda Flufflestuff) from a claw crane grabber machine at the nearby arcade.

Also helped by The Collector, with payment being a family garment
Aiko
Works at a cat themed pancake shop. Takes her job very seriously and always stays in character.
Cody
Along with Sion, he is uncovering/mapping all the secrets of Akihabara

Thinks that The Collectors eats people and belongs to Vampire Yakuza.

Is an aspiring writer and web developer, and may have friends in Hollywood.

Writing an urban horror "neon noir in the seemingly clean streets of Tokyo" book (bit of a meta reference to the game)
Sion
Sion is an artist and graphics designer. Cody comissioned him to make sketches as they explore the city.
Moeka
Moeka is a (possible) schoolgirl waiting for her friend in an arcade shop. Somewhat brisk with Ito.

Not into pop idol culture
Akane
Akane is a friend of Moeka and works part-time at a JK shop, which Ito doen't approve (and to which Akane retorts that Ito shouldn't judge her).

Needs The Collectors help in getting rid of an unwanted stalker, which he does, but at the expense of a cherished photograph.

Also has trouble with Goto, which Ito is more than happy to deal with.

Officer Denjiro
Recognises Ito from all the publicity surrounding her little "problem". Was originally going to contact HQ with regards to her, but is disusaded to do so from his collegues.

Ito seems them as corrupt, but as they point out, when you are at the bottom there is little you can do.

Is also implied that the police force are in the pocket of the Mifume family
Officer Yuji
Office Yuji dissuades Denjiro from calling HQ about Ito - after all no crime was being comitted by Ito.
Officer Ryu
Another person who dissuades Denjiro from notifying HQ of Ito's presence.
Officer Ono
Was going to be promoted but then was arrested (possibly falsely) on selling drugs. A gun was (possibly) planted at the scene and which may have disappeared.

Ryu and Yuji don't know whether the story is true or not.
Hayato
Works for "one of the best agencies around", and tries to get Ito to join (as long as she stays in costume). Regards Ito as "mature".

Regards Omega as a washout (and hasn't seen anyone from the organisation for a while)
Ryota
Doesn't help Ito much, and is rather indifferent to the search for Ruby/Reina.

Regards Ito as "delicate"
Jake
Consistently mis-hears what Ito is say, due to standing next to the loudspeakers, and is shocked when the DJ stops the music and she shouts her query.
Kazu
A "buisnessman" working for Kasumi Mifune.

Does not like being insulted by Ito and is quite happy when Kasumi asks that Ito is beaten (but avoiding the face)
Hideki
Another "businessman" working for Kasumi Mifune

Just has happy to join his fellow associate in beating Ito
Eiichi Higashi
Former owner of the Omega agency, which was violently taken over by Kasumi. Killed by Reina, possibly quite some time before Tanaka.

He (and supposedly his wife) took Reina in from an orphanage and make her a pop idol. She performed in Akihabara in 1996, most likely with her one hit song.

The money spent from that soon went (possibly spent by Eiichi and/or his wife), and which point at least he started to get her to "be with" various people in order to start earning money.

Emotionally abusive at least, his treatment forced her to commit suicide by hanging herself in a locked room a few days before October 24th 2004

Appears respectable to the media.

Whether his wife knew (or cared about) what he was doing is unknown.
Takeuchi
Suited person who tries to get Ito to leave by saying "there is nothing to see". Naturally, Ito wants to make very sure there is nothing to see.

Possibly up to no good (his workmen do see him with somethng wrapped in cloth) , but tells Ito that they are digging up the pavement for "scheduled maintenance requested by the buildings owner".

Does threaten his co-workers into silence, which they don't immediately understand.
Ando
A worker digging up a pavement. Feels that it's pointless.
Kubo
Another worker digging up the pavement. Also doesn't understand why the need to as the pavement was perfectly fine to start with.
Hospital nurse
Partially explains the SPIN system

Apparently overhears Ito talking to someone during the night (although Ito doesn't remember). Quite possible she was talking to Reina
Station attendant Magira
Claims to be a "jack of all trades". Unfortunately he is a "master of none".. His claims to know everything about Kamazura, but alas his knowledge falls far short.

Tries to stop Mai from leave (on the orders of her grand-mother), but fails - either fainting from the sight of blood from a dead crow, or being knocked out by Ito (who is then chastised by Mai)
Detective Ikeda
Female detective in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department Criminal Investigation Bureau.

According to Saki she is always "fixing her hair" whenever she sees Detective Suzuki
Detective Suzuki
Male(?) detective in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department Criminal Investigation Bureau 4th division
Officer Sato
Married male who takes off his wedding ring when he enters the building. Possible philanderer and so would be most likely to have a short career...
The Dark
A malevolent, meta-physical entity that feeds off human negative emotions, like fear and anger.

It also houses what could be called Purgatory, an all white encasing space for dead people.

Spend any time in The Dark, and you slowly lose all memories and semblance of self.

It seems to be able to change shape and size and has the ability to resurrect people (possibily only limited to previous Mask Bearers).

It's aim seems to be to either devour or absorb all of the physical world rendering it totally evil.

Whilst it can be contained (by preventing it (or anything else) coming through The Door), it appears that the only way it could be destroyed is by stopping all negative emotions, which Ito remarks will be highly unlikely to happen.

The Mask
Grants the ability to clearly see The Door, but at the cost of losing memories over time.

Performing an ancient ritual allows one to become The Mask Bearer
Kamenkai Cult (Modern version)
A cult led by Tokimassa who promised "a simpler life away from the hypocrisy and falseness of city life". One of a number of cults at the time.

He based his cult on a much older cult of the same name

Emiko, her husband, Reina and various others were members.

It is assumed that all members (except Mei, Takashi and their grandmother) died shortly before the raid on their camp on 4th March 1996 (at 05:50) - the police report redacts any information about survivors

Haruto
Elder brother of Daizo. Sells Takoyaki at his stall in Asakusa and limits his wares to 1 per customer. By all accounts this should make him as unsuccessful as his brother (and Ito being his only customer), but he certainly seems to be cheerful about his possible failure.

Has been trying to get Daizo to join him for years.

Cares deeply for his brother and is on constant alert for one of Daizo's depressive turns. He rushed to the hospital where Daizo was admitted on his first suicide attempt, bringing with him a pop idol magazine, which was "stolen" from The Historian's shop.

Gary
A college professor and fluent Japanese speaker. Does not like his boss much, and wishes his college would introduce interdepartmental Kendo matches so he could work out the untalked problems with his boss...

With Tony and Robert, they help Ito by... reading the contents of a flyer given out by Takashi shortly before Ito arrives

Each year they go to Asakusa, probably for the Kendo tournaments
Tony
Works in a software company and is a fluent Japanese speaker
Robert
Fluent Japanese speaker. Lives in the suburbs of Tokyo
Lady Fluffington/Cat God
Lady Fluffington is Ito's pet cat and also the Cat God

She does like Ito, but not particularly keen on Tanaka and offers Ito a place by her side, but at a great cost.

She isn't impressed with Sachiko, feeling that cats shouldn't be a humans play thing.
Masa
One of Higashi's clients whom he loaned Ruby to.

Tried to do something to Ruby, which she refused and then complained to Higashi, calling her "disagreeable"

Does "photo-shoots"
The Door
A meta-physical object that can only be clearly seen by the current Mask wearer, who can travel between the two realms as long as they can retain their memories. Forgetting that they want/need to return means they are most likely trapped forever there.

Someone can be forced through The Door (which Ito can do to Reina), at which point it appears they are totally destroyed.

The Mask Bearer
Becoming The Mask Bearer involves performing an ancient ritual whilst wearing The Mask.

It is a unforgiving, thankless and literally life-destroying position - whilst preventing The Dark from escaping through The Door, you are still subjected to human negative emotions moving back and forth. In addition, continually wearing The Mask eventually means you lose all your previous memories and most likely all humanity - rendering the wearer ineffect insane.

Hojo Clan
During the 14th they ruled Kamakura before being attacked by the Nitta Clan.

Facing total annihilation, the committed mass suicide
Kamenkai (Original Version)
Creators of possibly the first Mask Bearer, namely a girl name Chikako Shichijo
Chikako Shichijo
According to The Historian, she is the last survivor of the original Kamenkai and was chosen to become the first Mask Bearer.

Ended up hating humanity, but retain her position for a while before destroying herself in The Door

Atsushi
Owner of a bookstore which sells manga and cheap brightly coloured comics.

Nestled between the cat maid cafe and the cat cafe, he finds the latter to be a bit of problem.
Soichi
Seller of raw fish to quite a few companies in the area.
Nitta Clan
Attacked the Hojo Clan and taking Kamakura when the tide receded
Takumi
Takumi "poisoned" Tomo by giving it laxatives in his fresh fish, due to the constant noise made by Sachiko's cats, and thus ruining his life.

When Ito states that she is both a detective and a cat-lover he either doesn't care or doesn't believe her.
Hiro
Patron of the dance club owned by Mifune. Knows Omega, but won't really help.
Takada Isao
He suffers serious injuries to the head and abdomen, when leaving a shrine - almost certainly (due to the information being on Tanaka's laptop), by Reina.

The incident happens at 11:45pm

He is 74
Suzuki Kawana
Aged 71

Postulates that there is a youth rebellion against tradition Japanese values.
