A newbie's guide to DDO
By Burnsmh
This is a guide to show you the basics and more advanced things about the game. This will include, settings, group and guild edicate, gameplay style, tips and tricks that most advanced players know. Basicly this guide will take you from a day one newbie and make it seem like you have been playing a month or two. This guide is to help make you a better player from day one so that you are not out of the loop. I know many people who quit games because they can't understand it from day one or feel disconnected from the community because they started so long after the game has begun. I hope this guide helps you and if it does please vote it up and favoriate it! Thank you a lot guys.

- Please note I am still devloping the guide I just released it so you guys can get help via the stuff I made while I make the rest.

Full-screen and Windowed mode
Tired of alt tabbing and having to wait for the game to load back up when you go back to play it? Maybe it disconnects you when you alt tab out or the music plays over a youtube tutorial video you are trying to watch. Then the solution is simple, play the game in windowed mode so that you can click between programs on your task bar.

Step One: Login to character select screen.
Step Two: At the bottom left there is a box with different options in it, one of these says options. Click the options buttons.
Step Three: A menu will open up to the right is three tabs which open up different options, click on the Graphics option.
Step Four: Under the Graphics options there is a DIsplay section with options under it, there is an option that says fullscreen with a button that keeps the game in full screen. It should be checked by default, un-check this option.
Step Five: Accept the changes and enjoy.
Adding and using hotbars correctly
When you first make your character you will notice you have a single hotbar. On the left side of the hotbar you have an arrow that points up and to the right, click this and it opens a new blank hotbar. You have a total of 20 hotbars to use and set up how you want. Once the new hotbar is created you will see a circle with an arrow on it, this changes the hotbar from horzontal to vertical. If you want to add skills, abilities, spells or items for use you simply find the spell, ability or skill in your character page or the item in your inventory and you put it on the blank hotbar button you want. Another good trick with the hotbars is that you can also set vanity pets and hirelings to them.

If you click the menu button (The Dragon shaped like a & sign at the bottom left of the screen) and click and hold any of the option buttons you can drag them to your hotbar and set them there. I suggest making a hotbar with at least your character sheet, adventure compendium, inventory, social, quest log and main menu on it.

Also if you like to use your numerical keys above your QWERTY as action keys, be aware that the LAST created hotbar is controled by the numerical keys.
How to set up your microphone and set up push-to-talk
Once you are in game open up your options menu by clicking the Dragon shaped like a & at the bottom left. Then click Main Menu -> Options -> Audio then go to the bottom of the audio options and set the voice capture to your microphone, whichever one you use. Then if you want to set push to talk, scroll up a bit and you will see some options with checks next to them, just make sure that the one labeled "Hands Free Voice" isn't checked. Now this will make it so that no one can hear you unless you push down and hold the key bound to activate your microphone. By default the push to talk key is F.

To change the keybinding for your microphone look to the left of your Options menu and you will see Key Bindings. Click Key Bindings and scroll down to Interaction list and you can set the keybinding there if you are not happy with the default push to talk key. Just be carefull you might over-ride one of the other keybindings if you arent carefull make sure the key you want to set it as isn't already being used by something you use often as a keybinding.
Adventure Compendium - How to use and why to use
When you open your menu via the dragon shaped like an & at the bottom left you will see a green book called the Adventure Compendium. This book is very important and helpful if you are new to the game and need help.

Adventures Section

This section shows you all avaible quest to your character by level, location, favor and current progress. If you put your mouse over the quest it tells you what level you need to be to pick the quest up. It also tells you which zone to pick the quest up and who the quest giver is, however it doesn't tell you where the quest giver is so you may need to google it if you can't find him/her. It also tells you (After completion) how much favor was gained from the quest. The progress area tells you which mode/difficulty you completed the quest in. It is a very important tool in the begining to find quest givers, areas where quest are located and if it is appropriate to you. If after looking it up in the adventure section and you can't find it, ask your group (if you are in one), where the quest is located.

Challenges Section

This section will show you all the avaible challenges to your character, these are similar to quest but are timed and give crafting items used to create better weapons and armor. Mousing over this part wills how you challenge rewards, patrons, favor, apporopriate levels and progress. Instead of progression being completion or not, you are judged on how you did in the instance and given 1-5 stars, the more stars the more crafting items and favor you will receive.

Wilderness Section

This section shows you the different wilderness areas, these are open areas to explore with lots of small quest for killing x amount of monsters or x amount of rare spawns or exploring x amount of places within the wilderness. They are also the areas where portals for many quest and raids are located. These places are great to solo or group up for rare spawns and chest for special types of crafting items! So be sure to check them out!

Favor Section

This shows you your total favor and favor with each faction. Favor DOES reset when you true reincarnate. These different factions will give you things such as inventory bag upgrades, bank slot upgrades, buffing and healing NPC's, merchants and many other helpfull things. Total favor at the bottom of this list shows you the total favor you have earned and this is used to unlock very important things server wide such as the Drow Race, 32 point build, Level 4/7 starting characters, Favored Soul Class and many other very imporant things. You also get 25 Turbine Points to spend each time you gain 100 Favor and you get 100 Turbine Point bonus for gaining 1,000 favor.
Questing - How to find and what to do (Solo and party)
As previously stated in the adventure compendium under the adventure section is where you can find the level of each quest as well as the zone and name of the quest giver. But now that you have that what do you do?

Well first you find the quest giver, (Who has a golden trophy over his head, those with silver trophies indicate a quest giver but you do not meet the requirements to get their quest) and speak to them, once you have exausted the correct line of speach you will be given the quest. Once you take the quest you will gain it in your quest log, to view your quest log check the menu button and go to the golden challace and it will show you your current active quest as well as those you have completed.

To find the enterance to the quest look at your mini-map at the top right corner (Unless you've moved your mini-map location). And move in that direction untill you see a little blinking golden rectangle. Go to it and you will find a door or sewer or some sort of enterance labeled by a swirling yellow line. Click it and you will be given a pop-up menu.

This menu will allow you to set the difficulty and allow you to set it to a public or private group. In order to unlock difficulties you will have to do one of two things. Please note that some quest are solo and difficulty can not be changed, also that wilderness areas can not be changed.

1. Reincarnate once for hard, reincarnate twice for elite.
2. Get a VIP membership unlocking all modes instantly.

The way to change it is the next to last set of options you will notice Casual - Normal - Hard - Elite options. The benifit of changing these is that if it is your first time entering the quest on this character (Or after reincarnating) you will gain a HUGE bonus to experience points if you do it on a harder difficulty and are in the appropriate level range. The way the modes work is as follows.

Casual -1 level of difficulty from the suggested level range
Normal -/+ 0 level of difficulty from the suggested level range
Hard +1 level of difficulty from the suggested level range
Elite +2 level of difficulty from the suggested level range

This means if you open a level 4 quest on elite the monsters will fight as though they are level 6. However if you switch it to casual they will fight as though they are level 3. Also the harder the difficulty the more favor you will gain. You can not grind favor via quest you get a set amount. So if a quest offers 4 favor on normal then it might offer 10 on elite. But if you do it on normal you can go back, do it on elite and gain those extra 6 favor points later on, even if the quest is too low level to yield experience for you.

In order to set the group to public thus creating a LFG flag automaticly look at the bottom of the menu there are two circles, by default the private group is selected, just click the public group setting. Please note that you can create public groups in wilderness areas but solo quest can not be made into public groups.

As covered in the social button section LFG flags are created there and people can join your group or request permission to join.

Once your settings have been entered and you are ready to go into the instance you may click enter. However be sure that you have everything you need/want before you enter the instance because leaving the quest and re-entering the instance will cause you (And the group) to lose experience by what is called a Re-entery penelty.

Once inside the quest instance you will see a list of objectives to your right if you click XP it will show you all the different quest objectives you have unlocked up too now, (Many optional quest objectives and progessive quest objectives will not be activated untill you reach a certain point in the instance.), once completed you will see how much XP you will be rewarded upon completion of the quest. Once the quest is complete you will see that the "Recall" button used to summon you out of the instance has changed to "Finish" once all treasure chest (if any) have been looted you can click finish and it will bring you outside.

Once outside you will get to run back to the quest giver, use your mini-map as a guide if you forgot where he is it should be marked like a quest. There you will recieve your reward and favor for the quest.

Modo Tela Cheia e Modo Janela

Wish I had read this when I first started.:steamhappy:. Still, this post was quite helpful and well written. Thanks!

@Snootch, lol no. I can play a "multiplayer" game how I want to. If Content is doable solo, people can and will do it. You don't get to dictate how people play a game.

It is spelled 'etiquette.'

Also, DDO is a multiplayer game, so if you are solo-questing, then you are playing it wrong. Also, multi-classing is not as good as pure-classing.

I don't really comment much on guides but its worthy to not that you can change your selected hotkey with some button, i forget what it is. Lastly when you log off and log back in the selected hotkey tab redefaults to tab 1.
