Play using a neGcon on Linux
By nightmareci
If you played WipEout on the PS1, you might have used a neGcon or compatible steering wheel. Even if you haven't, it's still a great way to play racing games, as the twisting action enables very precise turning.

Basic Setup
This section covers using an EMS USB2[www.hkems.com] adapter on Linux, where the driver for the adapter is already built into recent Linux versions; that adapter doesn't have a driver for Windows 10 (which is required), and it appears the manufacturer is no longer releasing updates.

You may be able to use another adapter in the "Advanced Setup" section, but be warned that some adapters don't fully support neGcon controllers. For example, I have another adapter, the 3 in 1 PC JOY BOX[www.mayflash.com], and it supports all inputs except the L trigger.

  1. Create a shell script text file in your home folder, named "steam_neGcon.sh", and fill it with this code:
    #!/bin/sh export SDL_GAMECONTROLLERCONFIG="03000000430b00000300000000010000,HID 0b43:0003,platform:Linux,a:b2,b:b0,x:a3~,start:b9,rightshoulder:b1,dpup:b12,dpright:b13,dpdown:b14,dpleft:b15,leftx:a0,lefttrigger:b6,righttrigger:b7," exec steam

  2. Make the script executable. You can open a file explorer, navigate to the folder containing the script, right click it and select "Properties," click the "Permissions" tab, and check the box to "Allow executing file as program."

  3. Create a desktop icon that executes the script; you can right click the desktop, select "Create Launcher...", and click the "Browse..." button to point it to the script.

The script, when executed, runs Steam with a configuration that maps the neGcon buttons to the default Xbox buttons that BallisticNG uses, in the same arrangement used in WipEout 3. You could also use your neGcon in other games, using the Steam Controller configuration tool, as necessary. Also, to get an identical-to-PS1 layout, remove the D-pad mappings for steering and the joystick left/right mappings for menus.

If you find that BallisticNG doesn't recognize your controller, try swapping to the other port on the adapter; you can do this in-game. From what I can tell, the game doesn't recognize both ports, so you can only use one controller per adapter.

For Windows, you need the Raphnet PS1 to PC Converter or similar, a normal adapter just won't work. It also supports the pressure sensitive buttons on the Dual Shock 2.

The EMS USB2 doesn't have a Windows 10 driver, so you'd need to use another PS1-to-USB converter, but it should still be possible. There might even be converters that make a PS1 controller look like an Xbox controller, which wouldn't require any special config process, an adapter like that should just work.

Is there a Windows 10 method?

oh, for lubricant, try superlube, its a silicone based lubricant, i use it on my 3d printer, keyboard, and ps1 digi pad, aswell as stickboxes.. doesnt wear down plastic like petrolium based oils

Yup, that's pretty much it. NeGcon is awesome to fill that void, just wish I could fix mine like new

Thanks for this guide, hope to see a resurrection of this criminally underrated controller.

You cannot carry wheels on the go and common X360 pads don't offer the level of comfort this one does on the racing games.

Fair enough! I had a look on google but couldn't find any info on servicing them

I wouldn't advise using WD40 though, it's not a long-term lubricant.

Never had an issue with my white and black neGcons, and never opened them, so I don't know how easy they are to work on.

Cool. I have one of those controllers. But I think it must be worn out, don't know the previous owner...can I open the controller and use WD40 to fix it?
