Introduction
  • Solo achievements: 6

  • Multiplayer achievements: 0 (there's no multiplayer)

  • Time needed to 100% achievements: Minimum 2 hours, but should take from 5 to 15 hours.

  • Missable achievements : 1 ("100% the game in under 3 hours", this achievement can't be unlocked anymore once the in-game clock reach 3 hours and will require to restart to last save or to reset your save so you can earn it) (it has been confirmed thanks to http://cs2bus.com/id/matduf's comment that the "100% the game with 37 cards" can be unlocked even after you've beat the game, so it's actually not missable)

  • Minimum number of playthroughs: 1 (but 2 are recommended)
1. Items
Throughout your journey, you shall obtain weapons and specific items so that your trip become easier. Those are the said items.

  • Normal broom - Your main and only weapon. It can hurt enemies and carry/throw dust. Dust will allow you to stand on water/lava and block some projectiles. You'll find the broom in a chest soon after you started the game, in the roadway area.

  • Broom upgrade: Extend - (Missable)(Require the jump boots to acquire) An upgrade for your broom, granting you a longer reach. You'll find it in in a cave, in the cliffs area.

  • Broom upgrade: Widen - (Missable) An upgrade for your broom, granting you an extended attack on the sides of the broom. You'll find it in a cave, in the red-sea area.

  • Broom upgrade: Swap - Last broom upgrade you'll unlock, it is necessary for you to beat the final puzzle and get to the end of the game (and therefore is not missable). It allows you to swap the position of two panels. It can be found in the final area.

  • Jump boots - They will allow you to jump to a maximum distance of two panels. They can be obtained in two different ways: bring Miao the Cat to the Orange Fish to get a cardbox. Bring it to the merchant a few screens below to exchange them for boots. Then, bring them to your friend Mitra, and he'll give the actual jumping boots. Or, you can just go the cliffs, and Mitra will give them to you nontheless.

  • Green Key - Kind of a master key, this will allow you to open any door locked with a green lock. You'll gain it after beating the Temple dungeon (first dungeon).

  • Red Key - Kind of a master key, this will allow you to open any door locked with a red lock. You'll gain it after beating the Red Sea dungeon.

  • Blue Key - Kind of a master key, this will allow you to open any door locked with a blue lock. You'll gain it after beating the Cliffs dungeon.

  • Regular key These regular keys are found in every dungeon and allow you to open a single door per key. Therefore, they're usually important as they'll allow you to either get to a card, a boss or to get further into the dungeons.
2. Life Upgrades
In Anodyne, you begin with 6 full life bars. However, this ammount is bound to grow up to 16 life bars thanks to the Red Fairies, 10 of them being scattered in the world of Anodyne.

6 of the health upgrade you can get are actually nearly not missable, as they will appear right as you beat the following bosses
  • Stone Face boss (Temple dungeon)
  • Red Face boss (Red Sea dungeon)
  • Blue Hand boss (Cliffs dungeon)
  • Pyromaniac boss (Black & White Town dungeon)
  • The Seeing One boss (Hotel dungeon)
  • Twin Acrobats boss (Acrobats dungeon)

Then, the 4 health upgrade left can be found in some areas of the game through exploration
  • Beat some monsters up after you have gathered 4 cards to open an iron door (Blue Forest)
  • Beat some monsters up after you have gathered 8 cards to open an iron door (Beach)
  • Go through a small maze after you have gathered 16 cards to open an iron door (Black & White Town)
  • Go through the maze on the right path after you have gathered 24 cards to open an iron door (8-bit Maze)
3. Areas and Maps (game's first half)
Legends:
  • Exits, Nexus waypoints
  • Specific Items (Cards, Master keys, Health upgrade, Brooms)

1) Roadway

Specific Items: the Broom
Linked to: Nexus, Blue Forest
Notes: Pretty straight forward. Go for the broom on the right path, then get the key on the left path.

2) Blue Forest

Specific Items: Edward card (1), Health upgrade (2), Annoyer card (3)
Linked to: Nexus, Roadway, Temple dungeon, Lake, Black & white town
Notes: You need 4 cards to unlock the Health upgrade, and the windmill must be activated in order to get the Annoyer Card. The Edward card can be caught from the very first time you get in the area.

3) Temple dungeon

Specific Items: Red Slime card (1), Shieldy card (2), Health upgrade (3), Green Key and Seer card (4), Pew Pew card (5)
Linked to: Nexus, Blue Forest
Notes: The health upgrade is granted to you for beating the boss. Pew Pew card and the Black & White Town area can be accessed from this dungeon only after activating the windmill.

4) Lake

Specific Items: Goldman card (1), Jump Boots (2), Mitra card (3), Miao the Cat card(4)
Linked to: Nexus, Blue Forest, Beach, Windmill, Terminal, Green Forest
Notes: The jump boots can be acquired after some trading with the area's NPC, and they are recquired to get the Miao the cat card. To get the Goldman card, you'll have to lead Miao to the Goldman, then go to the Goldman's house and throw all the dust in the hole. He'll thank you for cleaning his house by giving you the card. Go to the left of the map to access the beach.

5) Beach

Specific Items: Fisherman card (1), Health upgrade (2)
Linked to: Nexus, Lake, Red Sea
Notes: Pretty easy area. You'll need 8 cards to access the health upgrade.

6) Red Sea

Specific Items: Red Walker card
Linked to: Nexus, Beach, Red Cave dungeon
Notes: Again a pretty easy area. Don't bother the mushrooms too much or they'll damage you.

7) Red Cave dungeon

Specific Items: Slasher card (1), Mover card (2), Health upgrade (3), Red Key and Rogue card (4)
Linked to: Nexus, Red Sea, 8-bit maze
Notes: This dungeon is divided in 4 sections: you've gotta pass through at least 3 of them if you intend to get to the boss, and the 3 cards can be accessed in these very sections of the dungeon. However, there's an extra fourth section, where you'll find the Broom Widen upgrade. The 8-bit maze will be accessible from this dungeon once you've activated the windmill.

8) Green Forest

Specific Items: Mushroom card
Linked to: Nexus, Lake, Cliffs
Notes: From the Lake area, find a way east to reach the Green Forest. There's nothing much here, your only threat will be some frogs and bats. Reach the card, then go on to reach the cliffs.

9) Cliffs

Specific Items: Rock card (1), Dog card (2), Jump Boots (3)
Linked to: Nexus, Green Forest, Cliffs Dungeon, Space
Notes: You'll need to activate the windmill to access both cards. The boots will be given to you when you reach the corresponding screen only if you haven't got them by trading already.

10) Cliffs dungeon

Specific Items: Broom Extend upgrade (1), Frog card (2), Person card (3), Health upgrade (4), Blue Key and Wall key (5)
Linked to: Nexus, Cliffs
Notes: This dungeon have two different sections: the main dungeon, and the way to the broom extend upgrade. This upgrade is pretty easy to get, as it's a straight line to follow. The actual dungeon is a bit harder than the last one but still easily do-able. You'll need the jump boots to unlock the broom upgrade and actually finish the dungeon, so get it before you go in. You'll need to activate the windmill to get access to the second part of the Cliffs once you've finished this dungeon.

11) Windmill
Specific Items: Windmill card
Linked to: Nexus, Lake
Notes: You can get to this area as soon as you get to the Lake, but iron doors will block your way. Once you've completed the three first dungeons, you can actually get to the windmill. There's a locked chest at the root of the windmill. Climb it up and press the button to activate a cutscene, showing you a few path you've unblocked (each one being at the end of a dungeon). Once this is done, get back down. You can now open the chest to get the card. Get back to the very first dungeon, the Temple dungeon. Get the last card from the dungeon, then get the last card from the Blue Forest area, and leave the area to the east to get in the Black & White Town.

4. Areas and Maps (game's second half)
12) Black & White Town

Specific Items: Suburbanites' Corpses card (1), Health upgrade (2)
Linked to: Nexus, Apartments, Blue Forest
Notes: You'll have to kill a few villagers in order to get into the house to gain the Corpses card. You will need 16 cards to open the iron-gate and then go through a very small maze in order to get the health upgrade. This is pretty much everything you can do in here. Be careful around the evil citizens, they deal very high damages if you get too close.

13) Apartments

Specific Items: Gasguy card (1), Silverfish card (2), Health upgrade (3), Watcher card (4)
Linked to: Nexus, Black & White Town
Notes: Fourth dungeon, once more getting harder than the last one. There are a few puzzles a bit hard, and it's easy to get lost, but it's pretty classic and looks like any Zelda dungeon. The boss is kind of a pain: his attack paterns can repeat over and over, which sometimes make him easy like you would not believe, and other times, make him the hardest boss of the game because he'll be rarely hittable while he can freely damage you. No master key to get in this dungeon, you'll need to beat it for the cards and health upgrade alone. After you've beat the dungeon, you can get back to the Red Cave dungeon, and head to the freshly open 8-bit maze.

14) 8-bit Maze

Specific Items: Health upgrade (1), Chaser card (2)
Linked to: Nexus, Red Cave dungeon, Acrobats dungeon
Notes: Surely the area I spent the most time on. This is a hell you can hardly get out of. You'll need 24 cards to unlock the health upgrade.
  • From the maze entrance, go right as many time as possible until you get to an iron door.
  • Open it, go left from the upper path, then go up, right and follow the path until you reach the health upgrade.

Get back to the maze entrance, and this time, follow this way:
  • From the maze entrance, go up
  • Go right by the lower path
  • Follow the path until you reach a Nexus waypoint
  • Save your progression and get the Nexus.
  • Use the upper-right path
  • It's straight forward until you get to a three-branch crossroads. Go up to reach the Acrobats Dungeon. Save and use the Nexus waypoint to gain some time later. Get back to the previous area.
  • In the crossroads, this time, use the left path.
  • Pass the chasers to go left twice, then save, go down, right, down, left, up.
  • Pass the chaser to go left. Jump over the hole to go left again, and save.
  • Go right using the right upper path (you came from the right lower path), pass the chaser and jump over a hole to go up, then left. Go left again using the middle path, then down. Jump over two holes to get up, then follow the path until you reach the Chasers card.
  • Once you've got the card, teleport to the nexus using the map menu, and go back to the Acrobats dungeon.

14) Acrobats dungeon

Specific Items: Flame Pillar card (1), Contorts card (2), Lion card (3), Health upgrade (4), Arthur & Javiera card (5)
Linked to: Nexus, 8-bit dungeon
Notes: No true puzzle, annoying music. A few tight battles and platform fun, but probably the worst dungeon in my opinion. Once this is done, get to the Cliffs' dungeon nexus waypoint to reach the last dungeon using the path opened by the windmill. Get the cards you couldn't get before in the Cliffs before you get to the Space area.

15) Space

Specific Items: Blue Cube King card (1), Orange Cube King card (2)
Linked to: Nexus, Cliffs, Hotel
Notes: Nothing much to do here except from talking with strange entities to learn more about Anodyne's lore and getting cards.

16) Hotel dungeon

Specific Items: Dustmaid card (1), Dasher card (2), Burst Plant card (3), Health upgrade (4), Manager card (5)
Linked to: Nexus, Space
Notes: The best dungeon in Anodyne! It has it's own different identity that make it seems out of place and stand out, a great music (that somehow sounds like a music from Spyro the Dragon), good and varied puzzles, some hard fights. Its peculiarity is the fact that you must switch between 4 floors during the whole dungeon using the elevator/stairs.

By the end of this dungeon, you should have earned 36 cards and every single health upgrades.
You should now get back to the Lake area and head to the Terminal area.

17) Terminal

Specific Items: Sage card
Linked to: Nexus, Lake, Final Area
Notes: Waiting for you here is a 36-cards locked iron door. Once you've gathered them, you can open it and fight against Sage. Before or after then, you can get a card in a chest on one of the broken side bridges. You can then head to the final area and unlock the final broom upgrade: the swap, so you can achieve your last puzzle.

6. The NPC quest
This quest is an additional quest you're offered to achieve after you've completed the game, where you shall speak to some NPCs from differents areas in a very specific order. At the end, you're told that there exists one more temple.
For more informations on this quest, I recommend you to read Sivric's steam guide
7. Additional cards (11 post-game cards)
There's something missing somewhere. We've seen 37 cards in the whole game, whereas our inventory depicts 48 slots. Where are the 11 cards left ? In hidden areas. Most of them are actually hiding in strange spaces you shouldn't be able to get to. This part of the guide will help you get to the missing cards.

How to get to the Archives ? From the NPC quest, you've learned that there exists an additonal area behind the temple in the woods. Get to the north west of the map where both extremities of the map meet, and use your swap upgrade on a tree to go up. Follow the path until you reach some weird big temple. Once inside, use your swap upgrade once again to go through the walls and go up twice. Then, you'll reach a teleporter. Jump inside to get into the archives.

Use your swap upgrade to reach them and get to the 37th card. 9. Anodyne's final puzzle
For those of you who have troubles with this peculiar puzzle, here is the solution:

10. Steam Achievements
The steam version of Anodyne comes with 6 differents achievements to collect.

  • A Tool
    Description: You found the broom!
Notes: This is not missable, you will achieve this early in the game.

  • Change
    Description: You activated the windmill!
Notes: This is not missable, you will achieve this at the middle of the game.

  • A Meeting
    Description: You defeated Briar!
Notes: This is not missable, you will achieve this once you've defeated the final boss.

  • Lots of Cards
Description: You found all 48 cards!
Notes: This is missable, you will achieve this after you've collected every cards the game has to offer (see part 5 and 7 of this guide)

  • 100% the game with 37 cards
Description: You finished the game with over 37 cards, all the health and broom upgrades!
Notes: This is missable. You have to get every broom and health upgrade and the first 37 cards of the game. You can actually end the game with only 36 cards and no broom/health upgrade and therefore not get the achievement, so be careful not to miss out anything. You will be awarded this achievement once you get the Swap upgrade, so check your inventory before then.

  • 100% the game under 3 hours
Description: You 100%'d and finished the game in under 3 hours!
Notes: This is missable. The conditions are the exact same as the previous achievement, except you have to finish it in less than 3 hours (which is nearly impossible in first playthrough)

A full playthrough for the 100% under 3h achievement can be found HERE[www.twitch.tv], played and shared by FireEatingNinja

Tips and Tricks to time limited 100% achievements:
  • Always remember that you can return to the entrance of some areas and return to the nexus for most areas directly from the "Map" section of the menu, which should make you spare some precious time.
  • Never stays day-dreaming or AFK in the menu. The time keeps on flowing even though you're on pause.
  • The Windmill is pretty much the half of the game. Therefore, you should make sure your time isn't above 1h30 by then, or you can be sure you won't be able to make it, unless you move faster on the second half than you did on the first one
  • Dying is a waste of time almost every time. Be sure to escape death as much as you can
  • However, in given circumstances, death can be one of the best ways to gain some time, but the "Return to Nexus" method is still almost always faster
  • Be sure to always get as many things as possible in the areas you're visiting on your first try, so that you don't have to come back, or that you can rush to your objectives if you're forced to come back in an area after the activation of the windmill or the acquisition of the jump boots.
  • Avoid fights as much as you can. Unless a monster is blocking your way or you're forced to kill enemies to open a door, just ignore them.
  • My personal best was about 2 hours long, and I've seen a friend of mine speedrun the 100% in a bit more than 1 hour 30. Both were on second playthrough, not umpteenth playthrough. Therefore, I think you still have a pretty large margin of error.

I don't know if they updated it from these last comments but this guide is no longer acurate.
The 3h speedrun achievement didn't register when I got the swap tool but when I beated Briar, also there is no mention of the golden broom (??? item) that you get if you beat the "boss rush" which is located near the 49th card. Hope this helps :)

The guide mentions that the Broom Widen upgrade is in the Red Sea area, but it actually is in the Red Cave dungeon. The Red Cave dungeon map of this guide doesn't mention the location of the broom upgrade. It is in one of the southernmost screens, on the eastern grey screen of the two grey screens (the other 3 screens are all blue because they connect to other areas).

I got the 100% with 37 cards after I beat the Briar, this achievement is not missable.

Thank you very much for both the compliments and your guide. I'll add it to the guide so that it might help others :cgrazz:

I read through some of the comments back a ways and they requested a video of a playthrough without using glitches, so I cut my stream down to a highlight for you guys.

This is me doing the 3 hour "100%" run with light commentary/bitching. I alt tab a few times to chat to my stream or eat (which pauses the game FYI) and my cat decided to be obnoxious but it's a pretty solid run. My time was 2:14ish by the time I got the achievement with PLENTY of mistakes.

I then kill the boss for the fun of it and allow the credits to go at the end. Enjoy!

I got all 6 achievements within 9 hours.
I only consulted the guide for getting the Goldman (Card 37) during the 3 hour 100% run.
The rest of the guide was VERY helpful - especially for getting every card. That would have been ridiculous (near impossible?) without any help.
Thanks again!
