Intro
Before you start, be aware that a few achievements are missable along the way:
  • I Put The Rock In Teamwork
  • Fashion Police
  • Practice Makes Perfect
  • Winds of Change
  • Golden, and most notably...
  • Onyx Completionist
The game makes backups of every save, allowing you to revert to an earlier point if you miss any of them.

Onyx Completionist unlocks near the end of the game, and requires that you've gathered 480 Onyx Scarabs from 6 separate Mummy sections throughout the game. You cannot travel back these areas, so if you complete one without all the scarabs, you'll have to revert to an earlier save and replay from that point on. Also, the final portion of this guide is about collecting the Onyx Scarabs specifically, and not giving a walkthrough of every puzzle you face as the Mummy.

All scarabs in the game (Onyx and gold) will disappear after 15 seconds. Also, in some Mummy sections, pyramid crates are positioned near lava, and their Onyx Scarabs may run into it. They are NOT destroyed at this point, but require the Mummy to be on fire to run into the lava and collect them.

As a final note, the game also warns you about a Point of No Return near the end; It's possible to miss some achievements if you pass it without wrapping up loose ends first. There is a save point after it, which (thanks to the auto-backup) would give you a chance to save your data and also revert to an earlier save to finish those achievements.
I Put The Rock In Teamwork
Share your feelings with your fellow apprentice. (Missable)

Uruk Valley: Throw a rock at Horus during the intro stage.

After the Spitting Toad launches you to the cave entrance, Horus is standing near a group of Explosive Flowers and a rock. Throw it at him instead of the flowers.
A Brilliant Weapon
Find the Blade of Osiris

Uruk Valley: After Horus's bridge mishap, ride the zipline across and jump up the floating platforms to the stone building on top of the hill.
Fashion Police
Try to stay fashionable around palace (Missable)

Luxor Palace: When you get control of Prince Tutankhamen, go over to the mannequin on the right side of the room. Choose to wear the pink outfit, then try to exit through the large double door.
Ethereal Guard
Find the Shield of Osiris

Mysterious Location: After a cutscene of Tutankhamen becoming a mummy and Menes sensing Sphinx's presence, you fight several Skeletal Axemen. Defeating them all causes a bridge to extend over a pit. The small chamber in the center houses the Shield of Osiris.

Medal of Sequences
Test your skills in the mystical game of sequences

Abydos: In the Grand Canal portion of Abydos, enter Sorkon's Sequence Shack. Complete all 3 levels of difficulty for the medal and achievement.
Zipping Around
Obtain a zip line handle

Abydos: Find Montu's Monster Shop on the high path leading to the Grand Canal. Buy any of the creatures inside (the cheapest is the Small Frog, at 70 scarabs) then head to Abydos Museum. Go straight through the museum to find the curator. Donate your purchased creature for the Zip Line Handle.
Crocodile Scales
Complete the Heliopolis swimming course

Heliopolis South Beach: Talk to the athlete jackal and complete his swimming challenge in less than 80 seconds.
Winged Dash
Find the Wings of Ibis

Heliopolis - Sun Shrine Island: Finish the first visit to Uruk as the Mummy. Achievement given during the following cutscene, after Imhotep explains the item to Sphinx.
Acrobatic Ease
Complete the Heliopolis obstacle course in 78 seconds or less

Heliopolis: Near the Great Wall Entrance I is a zipline requiring Wings of Ibis to reach. Cross it and use the Slam Attack on the button. A bridge extends to another athletic jackal. Accept his challenge and finish within 78 seconds.

Note that it's possible, if unlikely, to score a very low time (75 seconds) on your first successful run, making the follow-up Practice Makes Perfect impossible to complete.
Practice Makes Perfect
Beat your best time in the Heliopolis obstacle course (Missable)

Heliopolis: Run the same obstacle course as the Acrobatic Ease achievement, getting a better time than your previous record. As noted above, this may not be possible if your first winning run had a very low time.
Marksman
Find the blowpipe

Great Wall Entrance I: Reach the color puzzle on the upper level. Stand on the center tile, then copy the color pattern you are shown. Once solved, the wall beyond the puzzle will begin glowing. Smash it down, then open the gold door to receive the Blowpipe.
Home Sweet Home
Make the Riverside Farm habitable again

Heliopolis: Once you have Capture Beetles, destroy the 6 Eyes of Ra poles with captured Slim Burbles. There are 3 Eyes of Ra along the sandy slope to the right of the farm, 2 on the farm itself, and 1 to the left of the farm.

If you need more Slim Burbles, they can be caught in a tiny alcove to the left of the farm, near where the second Mummy Eagle drops you.

Smashing Secrets
Make the boulder in Heliopolis fall by burning its supports.

Heliopolis: Summon the Mummy Eagle from the Eagle Disc near the Cursed Palace. When it drops you off, climb the rope, then use a Fire Armadillo on the boulder's supports. Achievement given when the boulder smashes the obelisk by the Cursed Palace.

Medal of Memory
Match each pair of items behind the doors to win this game

Abydos: Go to Paneb's Pair Matching Place in the Grand Canal. Play his mini game, and match all the panels within 60 seconds.
Medal of Champions
Awarded only to those who manage to beat the gauntlet

Abydos: In the first outdoor area of Abydos (with the well) is a door to the Corridor of Champions. Talk to the gator-man inside and accept his pre-trial challenge: using the Wings of Ibis to double jump over the nearby fence. Then talk to him again and complete his 3 challenges for the medal and achievement.

Solid Espionage
Equip the Dark Stone of Invisibility

Uruk(2nd visit): Given during the intro cutscene to this area, when Bas-Ket explains the Dark Stone to the Mummy.
Harvest Moon
Find all the trinkets under the rich farm soil

Heliopolis: After the second Mummy section of Uruk, talk to the older brother inside the farmhouse and he'll offer to dig in his farmland for you. This achievement requires having the brothers dig every single hole. The digging itself can't be skipped and takes around 12 minutes per hole, but the process can be sped up slightly through skipping their slow walk to and from the farmhouse. While they walk, run into another section of Heliopolis (the Heliopolis Point entrance is nearby) and then back to skip the wait. Then talk to them to get whatever they found, and talk again to pick another hole.

This process will take at least a few hours, and works best as a running task you work on every time you're in Heliopolis.

----------
Of particular note are 2 Ankh Pieces buried here: One in the fourth hole counting from the farmhouse, the other in the field across the wooden bridge, in the next-to-last hole.

Winds of Change
During the obstacle route in Heliopolis Point to South Beach, cheat using the boat. (Missable)

This achievement must be completed before the related Chariots of Fire achievement.

Heliopolis Point/South Beach: Prepare for this by first unlocking the Atun Disc in South Beach. Do that by using Atun Eyes on the giant skull lying in the sand (near the cliff with the hanging lamp).

You may also want to climb up to the lamp and note where to stand so you can jump up to hit it. You'll need to climb up here and hit it for a challenge shorty, and the game can be finnicky about giving you credit for the lamp hit; It only counts if you hit it on your first try. If you miss and have to jump again, the game may not register the hit, and at the end you'll find out you failed the challenge.

Now travel to the Heliopolis Point. Find the jackal near the fast travel boat, and accept his athletic challenge.

As soon as it starts, turn around and take the boat to South Beach. Run through the Atun Disc and climb up the cliff to reach the lamp. At the top, make sure to jump only once and hit the lamp with your sword. Hop down the cliff, cross the Atun Disc again (Very important! Without it, you won't be fast enough) and run back to the boat, taking it back to Heliopolis Point. Get to the jackal in 69 seconds or less and he'll berate you for cheating, giving you the achievement.
Chariots of Fire
Complete the Heliopolis athletics course in 69 seconds or less

Note: Complete Winds of Change first, as the jackal stops offering the associated challenge upon completing Chariots of Fire.

Heliopolis Point/South Beach: This is the same challenge as Winds of Change, but without cheating this time. Scout out the path first and unlock the Atun Discs along the way (1 in Heliopolis Point, 1 in South Beach).

Buy the Cave Door Key from Gebel's Glyph Shop if you have not already done so, then use it on the gate inside the cave to South Beach.

---
Return to the jackal and accept the challenge. Run down the beach and through the opened cave to the lamp, using the Atun Discs to keep your speed up on the way. Hit the lamp and run back to the jackal in 69 seconds or less. (Note that the same issue applies from Winds of Change: Hit the lamp on your first try.)

Marksman Medal
Prove your mastery of the Blowpipe

Abydos: Take the left gate from the Grand Canal to the Narrow Canal (by showing the guard your Abydos Pass Card).

Tefnut's Target Tavern is the first door you see on this upper area. Play his target mini game and score at least 40 points.
Skulls Across The Land
Uncover all the Atun Discs in Heliopolis

Heliopolis/South Beach/Heliopolis Point: With 12 Atun Eyes, you have enough to convert the 6 giant skulls lying around Heliopolis into Atun Discs.

There are 4 in the central Heliopolis hub:
By the Cursed Palace

Near the Great Wall Entrance I

Between the 3 Eyes of Ra on the slope leading to the farm

Left of the farm, near the Slim Burble nest

---
1 in South Beach, between the single house and the hanging lamp

---
1 in Heliopolis Point, between the houses and the athletic jackal
Godly Strength
Find the Hands of Amun

Heliopolis South Desert: Receive the Hands of Amun from Bas-Ket after the fourth Mummy section of Uruk.
Pride of the City
Return all the Abydos Jewels to their rightful place

Abydos: As the description says, take all the stolen jewels the Mummy has looted for you from Uruk, and give them back to the Abydos Museum. Can be completed any time after the sixth Mummy trip to Uruk.
Golden
Increase your health to a grand total of 12 Gold Ankhs (Missable)

Reaching a full 12 Gold Ankhs of health requires gathering 20 Ankh Pieces across the game. Two of those are sold in Gebel's Glyph Shop, which only accepts Onyx Scarabs (which are themselves missable).

After every 4 Ankh Pieces you collect, head to Shetta in the Bedouin Outpost and have her perform her ritual for you, which will convert 4 pieces into a Gold Ankh (for 200 scarabs each time).

The earliest possible time to earn this achievement is after the Pharaoh Spider. As with the first 2 bosses, the mysterious voice speaks to you upon defeating the boss and grants you a full Gold Ankh.
Sacred Crown of Abydos
Complete the first chapter

Abydos - Caverns under Council Chambers: Defeat Apocalypse (the demon bat boss) in the cavern under the Council Chambers. Collect the crown afterward.

Sacred Crown of Uruk
Complete the second chapter

Uruk Islands: Defeat the Geb Queen and claim the Urukite Crown.

Sacred Crown of Heliopolis
Complete the third chapter

Cursed Palace: Confront the Pharaoh and defeat boss 3, the Pharaoh Spider. Collect the Helian Crown after.
Sacred Crown of Set
Complete the fourth chapter

Uruk 6: Achieved after the cutscene at the end of the sixth trip to Uruk.
Hunter Bronze Class
Given by the Abydos Museum for collecting 10 monsters

Abydos: After Anubis gives you Capture Beetles, start capturing at least 1 of every monster type. If you find any of the following, get 2, as you'll need the extra one for a side quest later on:
  • Mummy Worm
  • Half Brute
  • Almost-A-Bull
  • Wasp Spider
  • Spike Spider
  • Dark Worshipper
  • Rat
  • Tree Creature
  • Skeletal Spider
  • Big Bull
  • Skull Worshipper

All capturable creatures have at least 1 respawn point somewhere in the game. For further details on any of them, see the fan wiki.[sphinxandthecursedmummy.fandom.com]

With 10 types (which should be possible not long after you start capturing), give 1 of each to the Abydos Museum, and at 10 you'll get a Gold Ankh Piece and the achievement.

Hunter Silver Class
Given by the Abydos Museum for collecting 20 monsters

Abydos: Turn in another captured 10 creatures. You'll see enough creature types roughly around the time you return from Uruk Canyon.
Hunter Gold Class
Given by the Abydos Museum for collecting 30 monsters

Abydos: Turn in 10 more creatures. You'll see enough creature types roughly around your trip to Lost Temple of Heliopolis.
Master Hunter
Complete the Abydos Museum's Natural History collection

Abydos: Once you have the larger wallet and open up access to Great Wall Entrance III, you can get this achievement at any time. The Skeletal Spider found there is the last creature needed if you've been collecting them along the way. This includes several unique creatures from Abydos: the 6 creatures from Montu's Monster Shop, the 2 types of Piranhas you are gifted for clearing the Narrow Canal area of monsters, as well as the Goofy Lizard (from the npc behind Tefnut's Target Tavern).

----------
Below are some of the rarer enemies, along with the one place they consistently respawn. Some initially appear in other locations as well, but will not respawn once defeated there.

Almost-A-Bull (Lost Temple of Heliopolis)

Dark Worshipper (Lost Temple of Heliopolis)

Smiling Burble (Uruk Canyon - in the right-hand section, as seen from the entrance to Uruk Canyon)

Big Bull (Uruk Canyon - right section)

Sunflower (Uruk Canyon - left section)

Tree Creature (Uruk Canyon - middle section)

Electric Armadillo (Uruk Canyon - middle section)

Mummy Chihuahua (Great Wall Entrance II - first room)

Skull Worshipper (Great Wall Entrance II)

Skeletal Spider (Great Wall Entrance III)
Onyx Completionist, part 1
Obtain all the precious Onyx Scarabs in the Castle of Uruk (Missable)

---

As stated earlier, you must collect all Onyx Scarabs before finishing each Mummy section. Each scarab disappears after 15 seconds and will not respawn. Also, once you open the final chest and the Mummy faints, you cannot return to this area for any missed crates (without reverting to an earlier save).

Each on-screen scarab counts for 5 Onyx Scarabs, and each opened crate has 1-3 of them to collect (worth 5-15 Onyx), with one exception of a lone crate in the final Mummy segment with 4 scarabs, for 20 Onyx.

---

Uruk 1: There are 90 Onyx Scarabs to collect in this section.

In the Solar room is a single Alert Spider on a ladder. Electrify yourself by running through the hallway behind the ladder, then zap the Alert Spider. (x5) (Note: This single spider is the only enemy the Mummy will face in any of his gameplay sections.)

In the hallway to the Lunar room, catch on fire by triggering the red beam in the center of the pit. Ride the platform back the way you came, ducking blue beam on the way, and burn the wooden pyramid crate. (x15)

Use same red beam to catch fire and return to the large central room. Turn slightly right upon entering and walk onto the small ledge against the right wall, jumping from there down to the main floor to avoid the water. Burn the 4 pyramid crates. (x15, x5, x5, x15).

Use the red beam again, but continue onward this time to find another pyramid crate near a wood gate. (x15)

One last use of the red beam. This time burn down that wood gate and get inside the Lunar room. Then just walk (not run) off the edge straight ahead. You'll land next to the last pyramid crate for this visit to Uruk. (x15)
Onyx Completionist, part 2
Uruk 2: There are 45 Onyx Scarabs to collect in this section.

After splitting in 3, turn right at the T intersection. Run past the flattening trap and open the chest for the second stolen jewel. When the cage lowers, climb the nearby ladder, dodge the spikes while you scooch along the thin ledge, and follow the metal floor until you drop down in the center of the T intersection. Return to giant blades that split you, and look right for a wooden pyramid crate. (x5)

Continue backtracking past the blades that split you for another pyramid crate. (x10)

Return to the T intersection and go left to the lava room. In the back left corner is another pyramid crate. (x15)

On the right wall of that same room is a lava fall. Run through it, climb the ladder, and jump to the ledge for another pyramid crate. (x15)
Onyx Completionist, part 3
Uruk 3: There are 100 Onyx Scarabs to collect in this section.

In the left hallway open the chest for a stolen jewel. The metal floor now lowers you toward the lava and sets you on fire when you walk on it. Get fiery and run back into the central area, climb the ladder, and burn the 3 wooden pyramid crates along the ledge. (x15, x5, x15)

Down the right side hallway is an electrical trap. In the large room beyond (after starting the moving handle and having it carry you inside) are 2 pyramid crates. Head back to the fire grate hallway and get fiery again, then return to the 2 crates and burn them. (Run through the electrical room without stopping. You have just enough time to exit before the doors close.) (x15, x15)

Inside the left side room (beyond the lava hallway) are the last 3 crates. Step into the fire room, then use the fire ability to burn the pyramid crate in the center, along with the two hidden behind the large Anubis statues flanking the door. (x5, x15, x15)

Onyx Completionist, part 4
Uruk 4: There are 100 Onyx Scarabs to collect in this section.

After finding the fourth stolen jewel and being set on fire, climb the ladder to the hallway above. There are 2 pyramid crates to burn. (x15, x15)

Still on fire, run through the central room and down the opposite hallway (past where you emerged from the underground sewer area). There are 2 more pyramid crates here, at the source of a waterfall. (x15, x15)

On the lower level of the same room are 4 more pyramid crates on 2 narrow ledges. Walk off the ledge above and drop down to find 2 to the left of the waterfall, near a ladder. The others are on a separate ledge to the right of the waterfall. (x15, x5, x5, x15)
Onyx Completionist, part 5
Uruk 5: There are 65 Onyx Scarabs to collect in this section.

In the back-right corner of the main room is a hallway with a trap - a fire grate that opens when you walk on it.

This grate is the starting point for all scarabs here. Jump onto one of the drop-down ladders, letting it carry you along the hallway. (Pull levers in the alcoves along the bottom of the hallway to adjust which water spouts are off.) Drop down at the end to find 2 pyramid crates, below the burnable gate and a lever that raises a bridge in the main room. (x10, x10)

The rest of the scarabs require you to run from the same fire grate back into the main room, and will require multiple trips. Get fiery and look for another pyramid crate immediately inside the main room. (x5)

Run past the bridge to another pyramid crate. (x5)

Continue backtracking to find another pyramid crate near the ladder. (x10)

Run past the ladder for another pyramid crate. (x10)

And finally, climb that ladder for one final pyramid crate on the upper level. (x15)
Onyx Completionist, part 6
Uruk 6: There are 80 Onyx Scarabs to collect in this section.

Collect the sixth stolen jewel to activate the fire trap.

Run back down the hallway to burn a lone pyramid crate, which uniquely has 4 scarabs inside. (x20)

After pulling the lever, getting fiery, and burning the stone blocks' supports, climb up the stone blocks to find 2 more pyramid crates on the upper level. (x15, x15)

Pull the lever, get fiery again, jump up the blocks, and continue down the hall to the lava room. Burn the pyramid crate to your right, then run across the lava to the second crate. (Due to the placement of the crates in this room, some scarabs may run into the lava. They can still be collected if you hurry.) (x15, x15)

----------

South Beach - Sun Shrine Island: Arriving here after the sixth Uruk trip, you receive the Mummy's items and get a warning from Imhotep about the upcoming Point of No Return. If you have collected all the Onyx Scarabs from each Uruk segment, you will get the achievement just before getting back control over Sphinx.

The only thing that comes to mind is that Steam wasn't running while the cutscene played.

Hi thank you!! I actually just decided to just replay it and see if it was a weird glitch, I legit just got the achievement lol!! Not sure why it didn't do it last save as it says 480 onyx scarabs in my collections, but it worked this time and I had fun anyway! Your guide helped a lot, thank you!!!
Swyter  [developer] 19 Jun @ 4:33pm
Make sure you didn't miss anything, if you upload you save somewhere I can take a look and fix it.
catmozart 19 Jun @ 7:50am
Thanks for this!

But sadly I did everything and have all 480 scarabs but the achievement never unlocked I'm so sad 😭😭😭

I just finished this game with 33 of 34 Steam achievements completed... and you guessed it, the "Onyx Completionist" achievement had to be the one I didn't complete.

I'm not really sure how I feel about "Onyx Completionist" being a Steam achievement, as there are many factors out of your control when collecting the Onyx's (as specified at the start of this guide, "they may despawn or fall into lava"...). On top of this, the most annoying thing is probably resorting to "revert to a previous save" process which seems a bit clunky. I also don't like how as you progress that these mummy missions are not re-playable anymore, basically voiding the whole campaign if going for completionist and essentially having to start from fresh. Probably the only reason I'd prefer not to see it on the achievement list.

All the other Steam achievements felt fair and could be done in the open world with a minor amount of planning, time investment, and following the Guide.

Cheers.

You can spend your Onyx scarabs before collecting all the 480 and the achievement will still keep the spent ones in mind when computing the total. So don't worry about that one as long as you didn't miss any during the Mummy sections. :)

Oh, and if one if the trees you'll need those bros to plant to get the "Harvest Moon" achievement to pop doesn't appear after they've done so, then don't fret. All the 'cheevo wants from you is each of those trinkets regardless of such glitches.
Or in my case, that and several random crashes. Particularly while I was waiting for what this guide maps out as trees 8, 9, and 11-15, with 12 being the one and only invisible tree in my case: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/gamecube/589667-sphinx-and-the-cursed-mummy/faqs/28478 .

Finally, I imagine what antipodal said in the intro regarding the automatic save backup feature Sphinx on PC has could apply to H.M. as well, if those who happen to read my post weren't as lucky.
LGravy 2 Dec, 2021 @ 11:06am
Like Konork, I also want to bring up something. Namely, that you don't *have* to make 75 seconds you lowest time for "Practice Makes Perfect" like antipodal's screenshot suggests, as mine was 76 and it popped for me no problem.
Konork 10 Aug, 2020 @ 3:34pm
Nice work man! I want to give a little advice, It seems that if you expend some of the Onyx Scarabs before you get all of them, you miss the archivement. Maybe you can add that as a warning for future players.
Annie T. Mood 6 Jan, 2020 @ 5:29am
Guide helped a bunch, especially with the missable achievements and last monster I needed to capture. Thanks.
