How to Boost Jump
By Gabe Ate My Zombies
This guide will show you how to use the white cape and momentum to jump REAL HIGH. I mean really high. You can get through the skybox, man.

What is Boost Jumping in Journey?
Boost jumping is a way to get massive amounts of height and speed by using a glitch to use momentum built up on the ground by boosting with the camera pointed down and redirecting it upward. You can use it to explore parts of the level you were never meant to access (a few examples later in the guide), as a method of speedrunning levels, or just to look cool in front of your coop friend.

This works because the game continues to increase your built up momentum started by a dive even if you are on the ground as long as you are boosting with the camera facing down.
The Basics
Boost jumping does not require the white cape but it is highly recommended, especially if you are just learning how or you want some serious height.

Keep in mind, this will not work in areas where the game takes control of your camera or automatically limits your speed by not allowing you to dive. Some areas of note are underneath the bridge, the ENTIRE sliding section except for the short break between sections, and the ENTIRE last level.

First, jump in the air and start a dive. To dive, get some height and point the camera down. You know you are in a dive by the 'whoosh' sound effect. Then, as you hit the ground, let go of the camera controls and begin to boost and hold forward. As you boost along the ground, you will begin to store up momentum. It is important that you do not adjust the camera up or down; this will get rid of all of your stored momentum. Once you begin the dive and are sliding along the ground with your boost, the camera will automatically stay pointed towards the ground so you do not end up in the air (except the previously mentioned sections where your camera is controlled for you.)

Now, once you've built up some momentum, create a half circle motion from forward to backward with your stick. Simply going from forward to back will not work, but the motion is fairly easy. Finally, once you are in the air, point the camera toward the ground. All of your stored momentum will still be there and you will begin flying up into the air! The more you boost, the higher you will fly (and I mean FLY) through the air.

A much simpler way to do this is to simply point your camera down, feather your boosts, and use the same half circle trick before you hit the ground. See The Tower in the Places to Practice section for a good example as to when you'd want to use this.
tl;dr Basics
1. Start a dive
2. Hit the ground, let go of the camera, and continue holding forward while boosting.
3. Slide along the ground for awhile to build up momentum while still not touching the camera.
4. Go from forward to backward using a half circle motion to preserve your momentum.
5. You can go anywhere now!
Good Places to Practice
There are too many places to name that you can perform this glitch, but some good spots are:

The Bridge

There is a rock above where the glyph (painting) is, next to the symbol (cape fuel). Simply perform the trick into the wall on the rock here and you will build momentum without worrying about adjusting your camera left and right to avoid hitting something or a section of the level where it is difficult to stay grounded. I recommend this spot to learn the glitch as it is very early in the game, only takes a second to get to, and is very consistent if you perform it correctly.

The Tower

After activating the first painting, you can use the cloths to keep yourself building momentum while also keeping your boost. Simply go in a circle with boost held and your camera pointed down while picking them up with your 'shout'. This will refill your boost, give you a little free height, and therefore extra momentum when you decide to turn around. You can actually get to the top of the tower with just one painting! Just do this a few times, starting higher each time, and you can reach the top without ever having filled the room. A good speedrun strat is to pick up the first symbol, use the free boost it gives you while you're absorbing it, and going up the tower. You can even slide through the openings in the middle and maintain your momentum! This level is very, very fun once you learn the glitch.
Cool Things You Can Do
Bridge Level Out of Bounds

The easiest out of bounds is on this level. Using the same trick on this level you can find in the Places to Practice section, you can go straight over the level boundary. It is very high up so give yourself 25+ flaps on the rock and make sure your timing is good when you turn around. Will upload screenshots later.

'Slide' Level Out of Bounds

By jumping all the way up to the rafters in the final part of the level with the glyph (painting you shout at), you can climb along the wall out of bounds and explore the entire level from the outside. There are tons of cool spots and the entire out of bounds area is outlined by a near vertical wall of sand that you can actually walk on.

'Cave' Level Out of Bounds

You can rescue the cloth swarm that normally gets eaten by the robot snake thing by starting a boost jump to gain speed, getting seen by it before the game intended, and jumping behind a wall. Interestingly enough, you can interact with them after you save them.

There is a way to get out of bounds in this level in a manner similar to the slide level. Again, it is in the final area of the level and involves using a boost jump to get up and above the level boundary. I will upload a screenshot and instructions once I remember how.

Snow Level Out of Bounds

At the beginning of the level, you can do a trick similar to the rock in the Bridge level on the left wall of the walkway that you use to enter the level. If you boost up to the rock on the left, you can go right, boost up to the top of the level, and skip most of the tedious slow sections.

Potential for Speedrunners

There is already a big community for speedrunning Journey and this trick is the first step if you want to learn the route. This trick turns a simple, relaxing game into a 19 minute odyssey of out of bounds and obscure tricks. Look at the wiki for more tricks like this. You could be the next WR holder!

Coop Hijinks

I have a lot of fun flying around my coop buddy and gently guiding them to places of interest. It's very relaxing to breeze through a section and watch your partner from ahead of them. You can be extremely helpful to someone on their first or second playthrough.
Boost Jumping Etiquette Online
Many people are just trying to experience the game, so please do not simply use this to get ahead of your coop partner and show them where everything is. You've played the game enough that you of course know, but they might want the experience of discovering where things are.

Also worth noting that activating everything in front of someone because you are much, much faster than them is a quick way to get someone to leave your session, very upset that you took them out of the experience. Keep in mind also that activating the last painting in the tower level before the levels below are active will fill the entire room. Please, don't ruin it for the other person.
Conclusion
That about wraps it up! I encourage anyone who plays this game to get the white cape and try this trick out. It added a great amount of longevity to the game for me and zipping around a world as beautiful as Journey's as opposed to simply walking through it with the occasional hop is extremely fun. Please let me know of anything I missed or cool things you've found with this glitch in the comments!

Near impossible on kbm? Dude I've played like 50 hours with a controller and 8 hours with KBM and to be frank I noticed almost no difference whatsoever, the maneuverability is slightly dampened but hardly enough to impact it at all. I can dive boost, charge boost and dive charge boost all with KBM. While I do agree it is easier with a controller the difficulty hardly increases with KBM.

I see. I may try, if I obtain a controller one day in the future.

Gonna say it's near impossible on kb/mouse. The movement has to be smooth and you can't let off at all.

@Gabe Tried to demonstrate it here, is there anything wrong with my movements? https://youtu.be/3x-bRtqBZag

@Gabe I am using a keyboard to do it and I did exactly the same movements as you told. I did it in The Bridge map in the beginning but the max height I could gain was barely enough to get back up to where I dropped from after the cutscene. Also since I am on the keyboard I just hold S after I let go of W so it's kind of a flick. By the way, you mean the Left Stick by "The Stick" right?
Gabe Ate My Zombies  [author] 18 Feb, 2021 @ 4:47pm
@sans the effect is cumulative and make sure you're not just flicking the stick back after storing momentum. Roll it in a half circle from front to back.

I mean, I do shoot up but not THAT high up. Maybe I'm doing something wrong..?
