800 metal for a bridge and 2400 for a personal safe house and i believe everything else doesn't need extra materials to be usable, just default to lvl 2, the difference in material is trivial.
Adding material increases the durability gauge by the bar that is represented under the durability numbers. Simply all you do is feed ether iron, ceramic, or Chiral into the Auto-Paver. It's like fueling up a car with extra or unneeded material.
Are you sure you're selecting the paver? Sometimes several icons stack onto each other, you have to use the dpad up and down to scroll through the icons.
