Introduction or How I learned to Stop and love the Llama
Notice: Please read the whole guide, as there is alot to take in here.

Hello my fellow Tropicans, are you tired of the Militarist Faction, whining and complaining about having only four soldiers in total on the island? Built Armories and Army bases thinking that's how you get more soldiers, but end up with just a ♥♥♥♥ ton of generals and no real men?

Well you're in luck because this easy accesable guide will help YOU, my fellow Tropican, to aquire more armed men to defense your Island's important areas and structures, from any Rebels, Coups, and Uprisings. In this guide you will learn...

-Armories and Generals
-Building a Guard Station and waiting
-Negative effects to be aware of.
-Placement of Guard Stations
- And making a base to keep your soldiers happy.

Now I've obiously answered the big question just now. To get more soldiers, you need guard stations, but there's a bit more complexity as you'll soon learn.
Step 1: The Armory, Generals, and Math.

Once you have your Economy up and smoothly running, you can afford The Armory. Once built, any College educated male student can become a General for the Tropican Military. Now I'm sure you all know about it by now, and have built one thinking it will get more Soldiers somehow.

Well you're kinda half right. See Generals are Important because when you have at least one general, then you can build one of these.

This my friends, is the building you need, to get more soldiers.

But of course, you're going to need College educated Tropican men to be able to have at least one General.

Of course if you don't want a College, or can't afford one, you could always hire Generals off shores. Either way, you'll have the requirements to build a Guard Station and aquire more soldiers.

Now before we continue to the Soldier's proper, we need to have a quick math lesson.

You see, to make at least one guard station (GS), you need at least one General (G) you see. An Armory (A) can hold up to three Generals, therefore, three guard station.

Now a Guard Station can have three fresh soldiers (S) per station. So...

1(A) X 3(G)= 3(GS) and 3(GS) X 3(S)= 9(S) Total! Add the other 4(S) from the Palace 9+4=13!

See, one single Armory, means quite alot! But now that we know how it all works, and the math, we must now talk about the Muscle that will keep Tropico Safe.

Step 2: Soldiers, Military Care, and Guard Station Placements.

Now before you even think about building an Armory, or even a College to supply Generals, it is Essential to have a High School. Remember, Soldiers need at least a High School Diploma to actually serve in the army. Or not if you issue the Conspription Edict, but I'd strongly advice against that since it means poorly trained recruits, and rebels.

But once you have everything in place and you have your Thirteen Soldiers (Remember that's Nine from the Stations, and Four from the Palace guard.) You need to care for your Soldiers as you would with any other citizen of Tropico.

But Soldiers have different needs, and eventually you'll be called by the Militarists to build an Army Base like in the screenshot above. It's a special piece of housing specifically for Soldiers and their families. Don't forget to build a garage so they can go to work, and to other essential buildings like Clinics, Churches, and Farms/Markets.

Finally there is Guard Station Placements. It's wiser to have them near Critical areas for quicker response. Building a bunch of stations near town will mean they'll all walk either to the nearest garage, or just straight up hike all the way to the far off Mine to attack the Rebels that are assulting the building. This is not good for efficency. It's simply better to build a Station near the Mine for more immediate response. If you're building just one Armory, then here are important places to put the three Stations.

- The Palace (Duh)
-Industrial Buildings (If they go down, then your Economy takes a hit as well.)
-Production Buildings (Mostly the Mines and Cash Crop farms,)

So now you understand all that it takes to actually get more soldiers and defend Tropico.

But what of the effect of more soldiers?
Step 3: The Effects of Military Presence, and how to control them.

Ok, so, you've build an Armory, have three Generals, three Guard Stations, and your thirteen Soldiers.

But then you hear over the Radio that there isn't enough Freedom in Tropico.

and if you check the overlay on Liberty, they're right. You see, Guard Stations get you more men and make it more safer in Tropico, but they hit Liberty Hard.

If Liberty doesn't get fixed, then it's an Uprising and game over for you.

But of course, it can be fixed!

As you see in the screenshot, there are three buildings, as well as certain editcs that increase Liberty.

If you don't have any Electricity producing building (Power Station, Wind Turbine, or Nuclear Plant), then you can build a Newspaper. Otherwise, you can build the Radio Station to help with the Liberty healing.

But the best Liberty generator, is the TV Station, set to BBC. That'll be enough to keep the people liberated, while keeping Tropico defended.

Step 4: The Bunkers (Ignore this if you don't have the Junta DLC)

However, there is a way to completly bypass the need of Generals and grab even more Soldiers for Tropico.

It will cost you $4.99 however.

The Junta DLC comes with it, a unique building, The Bunker. Which when constructed is like a bigger Guard Station that can station Six Soldiers per Bunker.

The best part is, you don't even need an Armory to make it! You can build it and bam, new recruits. Although it is reccomended to still have at least one Armory for generals to support their troops. Also because the secondary complaint the Militarists mention is the higher ratio of troops to generals.

Epilouge: An Armed Tropico, is a Safe Tropico.
Congratulations dear Tropicans, you now know how to aquire an army, the math behind it, caring for your extra troops, and fixing the liberty drainage they all bring.

You are now defended and can fight against Rebels, Uprisings, and Coups that may or may not happen during your reigns!

I hope this guide was helpful, if you liked it, please spread news about this guide, and rate it and favorite it.

On a final note: Anyone is allowed to translate this guide and publish it, as long as they credit me for the original making of it.

If you deal with the needs of the people well enough for the map and situation, yes, you don't need more guards.

But if don't make people happy, you need more troops. It's really nice how Tropico 4 lets you choose between making people happy and simply supressing them, rather than forcing you
to play one way or another.

In fact, although not a recommendation for beginners, Conscription (see immediately below) and Martial Law can be a more viable and/or economic way to deal with your people than actually making them happy. For example, you can save money and map-space and educated workers by not bothering to build as many [or any] religious or entertainment buildings, and might even be able to get away with mostly shacks.

This guide should mention the "Conscription" edict, which is very important.
Without it, you need high-school educated troops, with it, anyone can be a soldier.

In theory, you should also check out the "Education" tab in the almanac to see
what level of education people have and what they're doing.

If you don't issue the Conscription edict, you can see what the High School and
College educated males are doing, if any of them are farmers, you should probably
fire them from that job and how they do something that need an education.

If you do issue the Conscription edict, it can be a waste of high-school educated
males who are filling the role of "soldier" which can now be filled by uneducated
males. You want to be careful about losing all your experienced soldier, but
you can click on the Palace and Guard Towers, then the people working there
and see how much experience and education they have. If you have a high-school
graduate working in the now-uneducated position of soldier, you should probably
fire him so that he can take a more useful job and be replaced by someone else.

BTW... once "Conscription" is issued, the Guard Towers, Bunkers and Palace still
read as is they still need people with a High-School education, but it's only that text
that is wrong. The buildings will hire uneducated soldier while Conscription is active
even though the buildings say otherwise.

The info about Conscription Edict was particularly helpful. I had been over using it. And I have the bunker and wondered how that worked. Thank so much!

I have had very successful islands with only 5 soldiers. Hell I have fought off uprisings on the island without even building any military buildings. Palace guards are just enough, I find generals to be a waste of money.
