Preface:
Here is a list of where to farm raw materials for quests and/or upgrading weapons.
Taken from the Nier wiki.
Will be updated with my own notes and findings, as well as other users' comments.
! DESCRIPTIONS CONTAIN SPOILERS !
Time of Day / Weather
Some zones such as Northern or Southern Plains may have different conditions which affect the type and amount of enemies that spawn.
As far as I know the different conditions are:
  • Day (Sunny)
  • Day (Cloudy)
  • Sunset
If you don't get the desired condition, simply leave and re-enter the area.
Difficulty
According to "Grimoire Nier" (the game companion made for the original Nier):
The enemies' strength on easy or normal won't change in any playthrough, but in hard, they get stronger according to Nier's level. However, word and item drop rates have gone up.
I have yet to test if this holds true to the remaster, so far I had mixed results.

Tips and Tricks
For "Memory Alloy":
Set the difficulty to hard. Skip the first robot on the B2 floor. Go on the rail-cart, and in the very next room a robot will spawn. Kill it, and see what drop you get. If you dont get a Memory alloy, let the remaining small drones kill you. You will respawn just outside the room. Repeat until you get an alloy. When you get that one, go ahead and go to the next room to the south where 2 robots spawn. Kill them and see if you get an alloy, if not, die. Repeat.


Fortune Teller's Dream:
After obtaining all 5 key fragments, a quest will be available at the Forest of Myth. Completing this quest will let you access the "dream" as many times as you like. It's packed with enemies and it's an amazing farm location for a lot of upgrade materials.
I farmed the hell out of it for mostly for:
  • Dented Metal Bat
  • Rusty Kitchen Knife
  • Broken Wristwatch

I got 7 black pearles in 2 hours on Normal, and I haven't noticed any changed on Hard, so yeah, no reason to pur Hard as it takes at least twice much time to kill enemies than Normal

It was confirmed in an interview for the original game, there's no reason to believe they'd have changed it but there's also no tangible evidence. In my opinion it's not worth it simply because on lower difficulties you can mow down more enemies in less time, thus having more rolls instead of slightly luckier rolls.

A good tip is if you are trying to get all the machines(simple, elaborate, complex) go to the barren temple and fight the boss with the evasion constraint and when you get the drop, evade to restart the fight.

It might just be in my case, but if you're having a hard time getting Forlorn Necklaces, consider unequipping all of your Item Drop Rate Words. This item appears as a green orb, not the golden one (same thing for Broken Wristwatch). I was going crazy not seeing it for a long time, then I got rid of the words and the first one dropped for me in about five runs through Northern Plains. Then I just kept going and while it didn't drop all the time, it was consistent enough for me to finish the farm within 1-3 hours (didn't pay attention to the time) - again, this might be bias on my part, do not try unless you're desperate.

For Forlorn Necklace : Personally I gone to the top of Lost Shrine, on the way to the save point you have 2 Adult Size Shade with armor (one where the cube is (with the broken ladder) and one on the left after the first ladder), and you just have to take the door after the save point to reset.

For Subdued Bracelet : Obviously in desert (3 spawns : 2 outside the storm, one in), to kill them easily, I used Dark Blast with Paraliz lvl 9 to knock them back, so I can finish them on the floor. Took me about 3/4 hours to get 3 Bracelets

Forlorn Necklace is not so hard to get as Subdued Bracelet, so the hardest is in future if you need it too
