Easy Guide to Fixing GFWL, Co-op, ALL DLC and Achievements - 2025
By SlipSlot
This is aimed to be a short and simple guide on getting your Steam copy of Fable 3 functional on Windows 10, with support for Online Co-op, Downloadable Content, and Achievements. To keep it short, a basic level of PC knowledge is assumed, more extensive and thorough guides exist and I will link to their creators in this guide.

DOWNLOADS AND USEFUL LINKS
Before you proceed with this guide you will need to download these GFWL files:
If you do not wish to play any of the DLC then you can skip the following downloads:
The below may be useful later on if you need them:
  • XUID Checker[cxkes.me]
  • Saves Location: C:\Users\[user]\Saved Games\Lionhead Studios\Fable 3
  • Custom Resolutions: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fable 3\PCVideoOptionsApplet (depending where your game is installed)
FIX FOR GFWL AND ONLINE CO-OP
  1. Install, run and activate Fable III on Steam.

  2. Close game and uninstall "Microsoft Games for Windows - LIVE Redistributable" and "Microsoft Games for Windows Marketplace" via ‘Programs and Features' in Windows Control Panel.

  3. Unzip and install files in GFWL folder.

  4. Locate Fable III install location and change the file properties for the "FableLauncher.exe" and "Fable3.exe" to run as Admin and in Windows 7 Compatibility Mode (right-click files).

  5. Launch Fable III again and sign in with Xbox Live (click "Home" to open GFWL).
FIX TO INCLUDE DLC THAT WORKS IN MULTIPLAYER
  1. Unzip and copy the raw DLC from each .cab folder and Traitors License files to:

    C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Xlive\DLC\4D53090A\00000002 \D7FCB87DC6790538CC5EE45EC44EC782603B8ACB

Create folders from DLC onwards if needed. Start moving files from Inquisitors first, then Understone and finally Traitors Keep, hitting to replace any files as you go. Followed by the Traitor's Keep license files.

  2. Change the entire file name of “00090XXXXXXXXXXX.LIC” to your own Hex XUID (link above), do not remove the .LIC extension.

  3. Open the "dlc2paid.bnk.dat" file found in the content folder with Wordpad and change the value of <premiumContentMask> from 1 to 0 and save.

  4. Move the "package_collection_info" file in to the content folder and replace the existing file.

THANKS TO AND DISCLAIMER
Special thanks go to UnnyBolt, Kumisnami, layne and Zopiahh for the contributions made in their own guides, of which I followed myself when fixing multiple copies of my own Fable 3.

There's a lot of guides around the internet, old and new, but many of them involve either removing GFWL entirely or using DLC offline, removing the ability to experience the game in full during co-op play. My guide, standing on the shoulders of those mentioned above, is a quick and easy way to avoid missing out on anything.

My guide, as explained at the start, is targeted more towards people with basic computer knowledge and therefore some steps are explained in loose detail. If any of it is confusing I'm happy to answer any questions in the comments, but in the meantime, I would highly recommend checking out the guides from the authors linked above.

Please do let me know if I have made any typos or you believe my instructions are incorrect or misleading and I will look to fix it.

If it can help some ppl having trouble connecting to GFWL when launching the game, I personally had to set as primary microsoft account address my old mail address which I created my old xbox account with.
Then I could connect to GFWL services without problems.

(because since I purchased the game on Steam, I set up bunch of mail address as aliases for my microsoft account, changed my primary address, etc... and I think GFWL might not be able to use aliases to connect)

Is the multiplayer still active?
Asking because i have also seen another fix that removes GFWL and its much easier to implement.

Are the extra hoops you have to jump through (inlcuding instaling GFWL and logging in) worth it?

Is this the Steam key? It's likely you used it in a previous installation and it thinks a different profile is in use, but I can't be sure about this. Not an issue I've encountered myself sadly.

@SlipSlot i still havent gotten a workaround the "this key was activated under a different profile" error. any tips? it's strange cause i only have one xbox account that would have been tied to it back then.

@Grimlor you have to copy/paste the dl link into the browser, chrome would download.
