Fullscreen Fix.

The problem: you can play this game either on a tiny window or in fullscreen (by pressing F4/ALT+ENTER), but the latter is very blurry. Neither option is great.
The fix: download Lossless Scaling from Steam. There’s a paid version but the demo is more than enough. Set the Scaling Factor to x2 if you have a 1080p screen (x4 for 4K), then run the game windowed and press the scale hotkey (by default it’s CRTL+ALT+S). This applies integer scaling to the graphics so that it stays sharp[i.imgur.com] in fullscreen. It does, however, create a little frame around the game, like what you would get if you were playing in windowed mode.

*Note: alternatively, you could set Lossless Scaling to auto, which makes the game fill the screen vertically. However, this creates pixel shimmering, so I would advise against it. At any rate, if you prefer to get rid of the vertical letterboxing you get the other way and the shimmering doesn’t bother you, go for it.

Controller Fix

The problem: this doesn’t affect every user but for some people the game doesn’t recognize controller inputs at all. Remapping controller to keyboard inputs in Steam doesn’t work either. Setting the game to work in XP compatibility mode does make it work but you can’t move/navigate menus with the dpad, only using the left stick, which is pretty rough for a 2D JRPG.
The fix: download any software that allows you to remap controller inputs to a keyboard. I used antimicro[github.com]. Remember to close it from the system tray after you are done playing this, otherwise it’ll keep running in the background.

For any future visitors, I instead recommend downloading EasyRPG player, and replacing the Start.exe with it.
