I guess all of you wondered if the great Half-life Update mod maps can be played in VR, because lets be honest - who plays vanilla after the Update was released?

And guess what - it is indeed playable, but it requires some installation steps.

HL2 Update installation on HL2 VR

I guess all of you wondered if the great Half-life Update mod maps can be played in VR, because lets be honest - who plays vanilla after the Update was released?

And guess what - it is indeed playable, but it requires some installation steps.
1. Install HL2 Update mod. https://cs2bus.com/steamstore/app/290930/HalfLife_2_Update/
2. Open both "Half-Life 2 Update" and "Half-Life 2 VR" folders in your "steam/steamapps/common" folder
3. Create a "HL2_Update" folder in "Half-Life 2 VR/hl2/custom"(if you don't have a "custom" folder - create one manually)
4. Copy ONLY "maps" folder from "Half-Life 2 Update/hl2" to "Half-Life 2 VR/hl2/custom/HL2_Update"
5.1 Delete all maps that have "Background" in their name from "Half-Life 2 VR/hl2/custom/HL2_Update/maps" - you may leave them be, but prepare to see weird backgrounds not optimised for VR in the main menu.
5. Download a GFCScape from https://gamebanana.com/tools/26 and install it
6. Navigate to "Half-Life 2 Update/hl2" folder and open the hl2_pak_dir.vpk with the GFCScape
7. Extract ONLY the materials folder from it to "Half-Life 2 VR/hl2/custom/HL2_Update"
8. Navigate to the extracted materials folder and delete folders "hud","sdk","vgui", "vr" - if you don't do it - prepare for messed up gui ingame.
9. (Optional) Install 4x upscaled textures from https://gamebanana.com/mods/35640
10. Launch the game and play it. The Update maps automatically take over the vanilla ones, so you don't have to launch them using console or whatever - just play the game as you would normally. You older saves on vanilla maps though will not work because of the changed maps, so restart the game or a chapter.

P.S. So far I only ported maps and textures aspects of HL2 update, porting of everything else requires further testing and will mostly likely introduce problems because of the differences in engine.

P.P.S. So far I only checked the Route Canals chapter - and I've seen zero errors or problems. But there might be issues in other chapters. So be warned.

Getting yellow squares ingame, where scripts should trigger an event.

okay friends i figured out how to get no ERRORs in kleiners lab if you go to the "models" folder and extract all of the wndw02beams files and put them in a "models" folder inside HL2_Update in the custom folder it fixes the errors and shows the beams of light that are supposed to be there
if this doesnt work somehow i also ended up downloading the "particles" folder so if you have issues extract that and put it in the HL2_Update folder :)

@Johnny Brown copying all models from hl2 update made my game crash on load. instead i've launched the game with -dev paramerter and examined the console log.. the model in question is "wndw02beams.mdl"
I have also copied all the "props" and "effects" folders.. not sure if it will do anything, but it seems game doesnt crash with those in place. (ill edit this comment later if ill find something)

You also need to extract "models" folder, because I've encountered ERRORs in Kleiner's lab. And probably "particles" folder too, because Update has some new effects like flies around the bodies.

When the VR mod came out I asked, and it was kinda explained off as the latest half life 2 versions have the 'rebuilt lighitng', but I was always under the assumption update's lighting overhaul was 'done by hand' or something.

Huge fan of Half Life update, but does it still look appreciably different in VR?
