update changelog
1.1:
forgot to add explanations for the pullaround and pullback earlier, theyre here now
introductory
first things first, let me ask you a question- are you returning from boneworks or starting with bonelab?

if the answer is YES, (returning) then you will be at home here and anything you may have learned from the previous guide will apply (with a few exceptions, ill explain shortly)

if the answer is NO, then i'd extremely highly recommend, actually demand, that you go read this first. its the original guide for the prequel boneworks. a ton of the information from that applies here so i don't need to relist all of it. this is like an expansion pak to that guide, like this game is an expansion pak in disguise
what has changed
after doing some research (i know my current hour count is pretty low but i learn things quick) most of the changes here are.. very mixed feelings. ill go through a basic rundown before getting to the real meat.

advantages

arms now have collision

while in boneworks only the hands really had any collision, the entire arms have collision now aswell. this is mostly an advantage but could work against you in some situations. i see it as a plus however- and the body overall seems more present than before

in boneworks:

the security guard enemy

the new security guard finally scratches the itch for a more realistic enemy john could actually fight- no more crayola jumpsuit or vietnam flashbacks. he also seems a bit more aggressive for extra challenge

shotguns (finally)

remember how there was supposed to be a boneworks update to add in heavy ammo and shotguns? yeah well they f ucking lied. we got it now though

a few new weapons

guns like the m9 and akm were added, aswell as others.

no more rifle lag

rifles dont weigh anything anymore i guess because theres no more laggy feeling when moving them around, making gunkata easy like with the gun tweaker before.

neutral

the entire avatar system

lets just say... it complicates things. more on that in a moment

disadvantages

you can take damage from the hands or arms

i dont think words can properly describe how much i HATE this, theres a very decent chance a well executed counter can still hit you because of goofy ahh hitboxes, and you also cant even block either. this needs to be undone

meanwhile, boneworks:

half the pistols dont kill with 1 headshot

while this isnt exactly an objective flaw, i dislike it because it halves the pistol choices if you want to kill in 1 headshot like normal. double tapping for extra style is cool but actually having to is a bit annoying

spawn lag

i dont know if this applies to everyone because it could be hardware/a loading issue, but spawning enemies can take a moment to actually spawn the first time you try to

that being said- lets see what else has changed and whats new. BUT FIRST-
AVATAR SYSTEM
i want to make this very clear now before anyone says a certain technique doesn't work or works way too well- using different avatars affects your stats aswell as height- certain throws will be impossible or way easier than they should be, and aiming well will also be harder if you have to aim up or down instead of straight ahead; a level avatar is best.

you could be too overpowered,

too underpowered,

or even have this happen

or worst of all, desync with your actual hand movement

this guide is based around ford specifically, as he feels most like original boneworks so he is the ideal benchmark. you're free to experiment with other avatars to be more or less powerful or simply restrain yourself, but to learn just use ford. other avatars that are like him are in the mods section.

as a rule of thumb, these are fords stats. any avatar with similar stats and height should play about the same.

mod selection
since the game is still new there arent a whole lot of modded guns yet, so this page will fill up later on with my favorite modded weapons or other mods i like. ill also add any avatars i like here- suggestions welcome

for the time being, the p350 is the best pistol more or less.

besides weapons,

camera mod[bonelab.old.mod.io] i used for third person footage
dev save[bonelab.old.mod.io] so you can get started quickly
llenn avatar i used for the weak avatar example[bonelab.old.mod.io] (SOMEBODY PLEASE BUFF HER I LOVE HER AND I WANT HER TO BE USEFUL [or better yet just port her back to boneworks])

two[bonelab.old.mod.io] different john wicks,[bonelab.old.mod.io] i find them a bit overpowered but if thats your thing

motoko[bonelab.old.mod.io] who is pretty similar to fords handling

mythra[mod.io] who is also similar to ford (it isnt really nsfw)

new enemies
nullbody agent

same as original nullbody, but uh... hes invinicible?

peasants

all the variations seem the same, and theyre the same as ford also.

skeleton

same as nullbody. again

skeleton mage

same as the skeleton but uh, he wont approach you so dont expect to counter him.

security guard

basically ford but a bit faster/more aggressive. they can be difficult to fight in big groups

hand to hand

all the old enemies including ford, nullbodies, early exits and etc all appear to act identically so the old guides tutorials still work here
throws
so with the arm collision and better body presence, how do throws stack up? well i think theyre better in ways and worse in others. part of this could be due to the avatar system.

for instance, the classic over shoulder judo throw can be done without actually grabbing with both hands because of the new collision. you can keep a gun in this arm while throwing for example.

it still works better with both grabbing, but its possible to do it with only 1 grabbing.

albeit from third person, it looks more like a slide around then over the shoulder.

another thing is that the 1 arm wrap around will actually knock ford over now.

compare to boneworks where this does not happen

other than this, all the old throws work about the same.

except the pullaround, you cant perform quadruple jointed magic anymore.

pullback still works the same though.

although in general, enemies seem less stable than before.

boneworks:

shotgun combat
so before we start id highly recommend the semi auto shotguns over the pump actions because pumping in the middle of a close range fight like this is hard to multi task. not impossible, just difficult.
also pay close attention to your shots because of the small shot count even when fully loaded.

lastly, ford will probably die in 1 shotgun blast so hit him with a pistol to provoke him first

anyway here is some combat, there isnt really alot to explain here- just remember to pull your arm back very far because of how long these guns are

knife fighting
knife fighting is basically the same as before too, but i wont hesitate to show some cool footage regardless

closing credits
yeah.. not as much as the first guide but this is basically just an expansion pak and not a whole different game, any more and id be repeating myself

i made this entire thing (initially, v1.0) in one day

have fun being john wick. or alot of frustration. usually both. again.

using the weak ford avatar mod ( https://mod.io/g/bonelab/m/weak-ford ) brings back the old ford basically but also creates some hard combat so it can be more creative.
