Want a better learning experience?
Use an existing translation or translate the battle words into your native language first.

I started with the game given translation English->Japanese file as German native and you can learn with it, but i realize if i could do it in your native language it would boost learning a lot. So i take a look at the game files and contacted the developers. The result is written in this guide.

Intro
If you want an better learning experience i recommend translating the battle words into your native language first or use an available translation.

I started with the game given translation English->Japanese file as German native and you can learn with it. But i realize if i could do it in my native language it would boost learning a lot. So i take a look at the game files and contacted the developers. The result is written in this guide.

The game does a very good job teaching Japanese. And given a translation file for your native language is boosting it 400%. Even if you are fluent in English it will boost your learning. And that is not considering translation errors and things that cannot be translated 100% correct cause some words are hardly translatable. You will see it in the game and surprised how other languages, specially Japanese is working.
Find the file to translate / replace
The translation has to be done in the words_and_kana.txt file.
  • Rightclick on the game -> Manage -> Browse local files

  • The file explorer will open
  • Browse to the "learn" folder

  • Make a backup of the file words_and_kana.txt (i put them in an separate "backup" folder)
    RECOMMEND: MAKE EVERYTIME A BACKUP BEFORE YOU START A NEW TRANSLATING SESSION

  • After that you can start editing the file or replace it with an already existing translation.
    Existing translations are available under How to install an translation.
How to install a translation
Just download the desired translation and copy it to the learn folder in the game directory.
Do not to forget to backup the orginal file. Finding the folder is described above under Find the file to translate / replace.

Translations available

One flaw to mention here, if you start a game the translation is baked into the save files so changing the words_and_kana.txt wont affect an game until you start a new game.

  • German[sbg-words-and-kana-german.s3.amazonaws.com]
Creating a custom translation file
  • Open the "words_and_kana.txt" in an text editor like notepad.
    (It could be done in MS Excel or LibreCalc too
    if you knew how to convert and use a CSV file or in this case a PIPE separted unicode file format.)
    WARNING: Do not use MS Word or a similar program. Generally they will mess up the file.
    You will see something like this:

  • The hiragana dont need transations so scroll down the lines till ID 1001.
    There you see the words that can be translated.
    Line ID 1001 for example with the japanese word
    いいえ which is spelled iie and translated to no.

  • In detail:
    The 3th column contains the word in hiragana
    1001||いいえ|iie|no|0|0||||0|0|2|6|1|0

    then the 4th column is the spelling in japanese
    1001||いいえ|iie|no|0|0||||0|0|2|6|1|0

    and the 5th column contains the translation
    1001||いいえ|iie|no|0|0||||0|0|2|6|1|0

    A translated line would be look like this for german language
    1001||いいえ|iie|nein|0|0||||0|0|2|6|1|0

    A french translation for example would be
    1001||いいえ|iie|non|0|0||||0|0|2|6|1|0

There is no need to translate all words, some words are not turned on for battle yet. Some words are not used and have no voice file. I explain the switches further down in this guide.
The used and voiced entries in the file may differ in future versions of the game.

I have translated all words. The translation itself can be fun and give you an interesting insight and further knowledge. I did the translation in half a day, but I was already learning japanese, so from zero I guess you will need maybe one or two days. It will probably depend on your native language too and how fast you can use translation sites and japanese language sites to translate japanese in your native language.

Always cross check your translation from different sources. You can get 3 different translations for the same word and sometimes it is very confusing. Japanese words changes their meaning by context. An without context you don't know how to translate an word.
In that case do the translation from the english instead. That might be result in an bad or wrong translation but you will recognize it in the game and update your translation.
One flaw to mention here, if you start a game the translation is baked into the save files so changing the words_and_kana.txt wont affect an game until you start a new game.
Websites for translations
Always crosscheck your translation or you will learning wrong translations, so take care.

I used mainly
https://translate.google.com
and
https://www.deepl.com
with different sites by searching for "xxxxx japanese meaning" like
https://www.nihongomaster.com

Do not translate with one source alone. Specifically, google does a bad job for japanese. After using google, copy the hiragana to deepl and cross check. Verify it with other sites. If you have a japanese friend or acquaintance ask for help. That would be a great, specially if you make your translation file public, which i hope you do to support this great game. This will also encourage the developers to make translations easier to make and share.
The file format and columns explained
The translation for battles are stored in a plain text file called words_and_kana.txt in
unicode format with the | as field separator, quotes are not used to capsule strings.
You can edit them easily in an text editor.

  • 3th column "Kana" contains the word that has to be translated.
    1062||がんばって|ganbatte|persist, do your best|0|0||||0||30|3|1|0

  • 4th column "Roumaji" contains the japanese word written in latin characters. Roumaji is used to show the spelling and how to type in the words with a latin keyboard. For example if you want to translate the word がんばって with a translation program/website you type the roumaji chars ganbatte into.
    1062||がんばって|ganbatte|persist, do your best|0|0||||0||30|3|1|0

  • 5th column "English" contains the current english translation. Change the value in this column to make a translation into your language.
    1062||がんばって|ganbatte|persist, do your best|0|0||||0||30|3|1|0

    If a translation can be interpreted with more than one meaning they are separated with an ,
    1062||がんばって|ganbatte|persist, do your best|0|0||||0||30|3|1|0

    So がんばって or ganbatte can mean persist or do your best in english.

    Japanese has sometimes different words to describe something more precise, like neesan, which is used for older sister. So to make it clear which means what an explanation could be used.
    Just put it in () brackets and separate them with an , like a different meaning.
    1637||ねえさん|neesan|sister, (older sister)|10|0|0|0||0|0|40|5|1|0

    () brackets can also be used to mark entries which needs a review to find an entry that must be improved or checked later.
    1191||ごめん|gomen|sorry, (your marking here)|0|0||||1||23|-1|1|0

  • 11th column "NonBattle" turn word on/off for the battle
    0 = used in battle
    1 = not used in battle
    If you are already known some japanese or start an 2nd playthrough you maybe want to turn on more words to make the game more challenging.
    Here これ and それ are turned on for battle while あれ is not.

    1104||これ|kore|this|10|0||||0||13|1|1|0
    1105||それ|sore|that|10|0||||0||13|3|1|0
    1106||あれ|are|that over there|10|0||||1||14|-1|1|0

    Be aware some answers need more typing like that over there.

  • 13th column "SectionId" (4th column from the right). Lines with 8888 or 9999 in that column are not used in the game. You can leave them alone. If you plan a second playthrough or want to make a complete translation you can also translate them. They might be used in further versions of the game.
    1032||とても|totemo|very|0|0||||1||8888|9999|1|0

    For more information about adding words visit next section Adding words and changing learn order
Adding words and changing learn order
Description from the developer

Controlling when words are learned
Three variables control word learning.

Non-Battle Word?
0 = No, will be in battles
1 = Yes, will NOT be in battles
SectionId - Controls what order word is learned. Lower numbers are learned first.
Learn Order - Controls what order word is learned for words that have the same SectionId. Lower numbers are learned first.

Example #1 - Determining Learn Order

Non-Battle Word = 0
Section Id = 2
Learn Order = 1

Non-Battle Word = 0
Section Id = 2
Learn Order = 2

あ and い 's Section Ids both = 2

Which one is learned first?
In this case, Learn Order breaks the tie. あ has a lower the Learn Order (1) than い (2), so あ would be learned first.
If both Section Id and Learn Order are equal, then I believe the order the words in the file may be the deciding factor.

Example #2 - Changing a word to be learned and used in battle
Jikan is a non-battle word and is currently excluded from the game.

Change #1 - Set Section Id and Learn Order
Set Section Id = 1, Learn Order = 2

However, the word is still set as a non-battle word, so it still won't be learned.

Change #2 - Set Non-Battle Word? to 0

This word can now be learned through battles.

Example #3 - Setting up list of words
I'ved added/updated 4 words in the words_and_kana.txt file

Their Section IDs = 1, so they will be the first words in the game you learn, even before the regular content whose lowest Section Id = 2.

To order them, I set the Learn Order to 3, 4, 5, and 6. If the Learn Order is the same, then I believe the order will be determined by the order they appear in the file.

Non-battle word? = 0 for all.
Custom voice files
Words with the values 8888 or 9999 in the 13th column (SectionId) do not have voice files. So there will be no vocal response in the battles.

But you can add custom voice files and place them in the folder .\audio\KanaWords.
For example, for jikan add an voice file named jikan.ogg in the folder like this:
.\audio\KanaWords\jikan.ogg

For your private use you may search for sound files in your favorite anime games. Often they are stored in an separate folder as .ogg-files, copy and rename them, maybe some cutting and converting from other formats.

With editing the words_and_kana.txt you may be able to learn words and phrases from your favorite anime games.

As a heads up if you put non existent romaji it will raise this error:
TypeError: no implicit conversion from nil integer

Can you swap between different kanas from hiragana to katakana? Does the built in font support it or does it bug out?

Hi, I love the game so far, the only issue I have is that I already know a little bit of Japanese, so I set the learn rate to quite low, and I ran out of words to learn..

Using this I tried to add new words, but it only seems to work if I also start a new game; I see the new words pop up in a new game, but if I load a save I won't learn the new words.

Is there update the word list in an existing save?

Hang on, can't we just use an escape on special characters so the system reads it as text?
I.e. "\@" instead of "@"

Yes, it is possible. Special chars can be used. There may be a bug if you input a special char, with accent maybe then the game crashes if you delete it after you input it. So as long the bug exists dont delete a special char, just confirm the input and type again.

And in french ? it's possible ? :steammocking:
