Issues
These problems need to be solved by Proton or Ubisoft:
  • Grass blades can exhibit a slight black flickering on direct sunlight. This is mitigated by turning antialising to medium or high, but not fixable entirely at the moment.

  • Classic Annoyance of Ubi Conect popup
First steps
Install Proton GE43
  • Go to DESKTOP MODE and type Proton in the search bar of the Discovery app store.
  • Download Protonup-qt
  • Click Add version
  • Download Proton GE-43, wait for the download to finish (bar in bottom right, give it a moment to start)
  • Return to Gaming Mode
  • On the Settings->Compatibility tab for Immortals Fenyx Rising, we will force the use of Proton GE 43 You will find it at the top of the list, usually. Right now leave the default for we will first deal with the Ubi connect stuff which can fail on non default proton

Set up your gamepad

The game doesnt read the Decks gamepad. Open the game's Library tab, select the controller next to settings on the right. Select the Default option and replace it by Community Templates -> Gamepad

Deal with Ubisoft Connect

If you are using this for the first time on deck you will have to install it and log in. Be aware that sometimes the deck shows the circle thingy instead of what is actually happening which may lead you to think it hung up. If you have never used the Ubi launcher, I recommend launching from dektop mode to set it up.
Dont get scared if takes some time on checking extra content. This is a ubisoft problem and happens on pc as well. Just wait a bit. It gets faster on succesive boots.

Once the game boots, we need to

Remove the popup
You will see a popup for Ubi Connect on the top right. It wont go away on it's own.
We need to select Ubisoft Connect from the main menu, open the overlay, navigate down to the Gear on the icons in the bar on the left and uncheck all the notification boxes. Press exit. There's a 90% chance the overlay doenst go away so we must quit the game. But now pop ups wont come back anymore. Also, dont worry if during future game boots Ubi Connect asks for a password, it will quickly move on on it's own. It only asks for passwords on older games, ironically.

So, now

Enable Proton GE 43

Go back to
Settings->Compatibility tab for Immortals Fenyx Rising, and force the use of Proton GE43. You will find it at the top of the list, usually.

There. The game should be functional now. Let's configure it.

Game Settings
Go into video settings and change from Borderless to Fullscreen. Turn vysnc off.
Turn Fov down to 90-92 (camera is too far away anyways).
In Game Settings tab, turn photo mode off
Recommended: Medium preset with 40hz and 40fps cap.

Remember: the game needs to build a cache so you may see some stutter the first times you jump into water o deploy certain particle effects. I also recommend running the in-game benchmark after install to help that process along before playing. If after you've spent some time you still see drops or instability, try changing settings or aiming for a lower stable framerate

This is personal, but I aim for 40fps and cap the framerate at that putting the display at 40hz. But the game has unstable framerates so if you want high framerates you are better off using the Low preset and turning up Textures to medium or Medium preset and Adaptive Resolution.

Personally, I use the Medium preset with Textures on High, Shadows on Low and AA on Medium. At 40hz i see a few drops from 40 but not significant. I could probably cap at 30 and raise settings a bit. But experiment, and do keep in mid that the game likes to drop frames in areas so you have to adjust for the lowest framerate you can keep stable to avoid stutter.
Medium capped at 30 should be fine for anyone who doesnt want to tinker. I also recommend disabling motion blur.

Final considerations
Just be aware that you have to tinker to get it playable. What the game sets by default is too high.

Also, the game gets stuck if you make the deck go to sleep. I recommend saving and quitting when you wanna put it down.

There is a new guide available for better Steam Deck settings. With 2 Presets for Performance or Quality. By the way Proton Experimental works perfectly fine for this game

Just following up for anyone looking later - standard Proton seems to work fine. My Deck used it's default recommendation and things ran fine. There were long pauses when it was trying to load assets and things on high settings, so bump some stuff down, but it works.

This guide is old and development on proton mives fast. When I wrote it, gr 43 was the only ine with a hotfix for this games audio problems. I bet it has long been folded into regular proton as well. Id use experimental since its the one that tends to have fixes for when stupid comany launchers break games

If I use Proton GE 43 then I get an error message. I can just use the default Proton. Also currently the default controller setup seems fine as well. I'd even dare to say that perhaps this guide should only be used for the graphics settings.

That load might get smaller if you install ubi connect manually before the game or as the shaders are built

I settles for GE 8-6 and it's runs well at 40 fps locked. No audio bug, no grass bug. The only very annoying is it takes around 7 mins to load the game. It freeze at loading screen for 7 mins before it enter main menu, the place where u select new game, load game etc. The in game music is running normally when it freeze/hang.

I have not played this in forever. GE 7.43 worked back then. check for that version or, try experimental. You might need to use one the serveral installers for launchers like ubisoft connect. Generally speaking what happens is that an update to the POS launcher broke something. Try experimental.
TLDR use experiemtnal, launch in desktop mode first, alt tab out, set up ubisoft connecta nd turn off as many options as it will let you, go back to gaming mode and try then

undervolting does not magically fix problems that you cant fix with other settings. Te guide is old a proton has probably improved significantly, but undervolting can only save you battery not fix a game

I run Proton-Experimental and I unlocked my bios 0115 (i think) and under-volted my cpu/soc/and gfx by -20 mv. That got the game to run butter smooth at 40hz all day, no lag, freezes or crashes. There are guides out there if you want to learn how to unlock your hidden bios settings but be warned: Don't go poking around in shit unless your absolutely sure what it does, cuz otherwise you can VERY EASILY brick your deck. But if you follow the guides, you'll be just fine.
