Manual Basics (abridged)
Assuming, you have NOT Read the Manual. (You should. Print it too!)

First;
READ! THE! MANUAL!
For vintage results. Print it too, it will save you hassle.

For optimum results. Print it in booklet form. This is a website I used to have it handy.
https://online2pdf.com/en/create-booklet-flipbook

For best results, trim the credits page. So it all prints in 16 pages.
https://www.ilovepdf.com/split_pdf

If you still want the credits. Either print it as a "2 page" view, so you can split and tape it on your stapled booklet. Or print it as is (if you don't mind blank pages.)

PS: As of a recent update. You can also view an in-game manual by either pressing the "F1" Key on your keyboard, or the "X" button on an XBox Controller (or your Sony/Nintendo controller equivalent.) This doesn't have sample stats from your available classes alongside some sample visuals to go by. But it's handy advice, in case you forgot what a term like damage types or conditions are.
Actual Gameplay Basics (controls abridged)
If you're still stuck on being able to play the game, or not wanting to read the manual. At least know your game-play options. And be mindful that escape, is always an option.
  • WASD is your movement. On controller (And keyboard), it's the arrow/direction keys.
    • Fun fact; D/Down key lets you do a 180 turn. You can't side-step in the dungeon though.
    • Fun fact; On controller. All thumb-sticks move the party.
  • R/Escape/Backspace is used to rest. Use it after every battle, and in a safe area if possible.
    • On controller; the "B Button" rests. Be mindful of this! (It's in manual as the "right face button")
    • Fun fact: you can get attacked, even at the ground area on resting.
  • Space/Enter is used to bring the field menu. Useful for checking your position*, your party stats, and saving your progress!
    • On controller; "A Button" opens the field menu. Be mindful of this! (It's in manual as the "down face button")
    • Fun fact: Skills can level up (with Roman Numerals). In manual, it's "developed through regular use". Don't underestimate grinding even the 0 SP Physical attack, for this reason!
    • Fun fact: You can't always check your position (map co-ordinates) in fields with Dark Magic. This is a callback to Wizardry.
One last thing to note, on party members.

A: Look at the manual, for your ideal party member's. Write them down on a piece of paper, so you can roll campfire recruits, for your ideal fighters.

1 Slash, 1 Pierce, 1 Blunt and 1 Magic User is what the manual suggests at minimum. Ideally, consider hybrid Melee/Caster's, such as Priest or Valkyrie.

Take note that in this game. If a party member dies, that's it. They're dead. No revives. Get to your nearest campfire to recruit a new party member (assuming, you don't end up lucky with a random encounter.)

If you want to avoid a party wipe, by impossible odds. Take note that you can always escape from battle. First turn's safe. Note this won't save you from unavoidable battles, if you try to move to certain tiles, I guess?

Also, in case of a party wipe. Don't panic. You won't lose the game on a party defeat, as the game will roll you a new set of characters, who would "roughly" match the power of the previous party. And any trigger's you made in the game world will also persist (for good or ill.)
Spoiler Free Map (references)
If you want map spoilers, look at this guide;
https://cs2bus.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3009832663
If you DON'T want Map spoilers. Then print up to 6 of either of the clear map grids I've edited for you, down below. For your drawing, or photo editing referencing.

If printing, print the white version. Otherwise, the black version's more realistic, for easy viewing.

If you want it in booklet form, then you shouldn't need more than two pieces of blank paper (A4, or Letter grade?) Folded and stabled in between. The pages between those two paper sheets should serve as a good holder for your maps (printed on, glued to, or even hand-drawn FAIK.)

For reference; the map grid is roughly 22x22 (20x20 actual map). With the Ground Floor being 7x7, tucked in the lower left corner.

Still. You may want to keep most of the blank field on that 7x7 handy, for extra note taking. Such as what party member's you sent to the guardsmen." At end game (of Part 1).

Dark Grid
(Best for Monitor reference. For best results, have two monitors, or not be in fullscreen.)
Light Grid
(Best for Printing, for pencil sketching.)
Last Note - New Game Plus
There's one last note, of a bonus mode for when your motley crew of adventurers, become heroes in slaying LEINAD. Which for long term fans of Wizardry, is a cool shout out to Wizardry 4.
Defeat Leinad to continue the story through his perspective and escape the dungeon while commanding an army of monsters
IE: When (not if) you beat the main game. You get to play as this bad demon lord.

Some speculative notes, to be mindful on.
  • Take physical (or digital) notes on Monster Skills used against you if you can. Ideally as you're dungeon diving. The Manual doesn't cover Monster Skills, or their Stats at all.
    • Failing that. There's always writing down what Skills they have in summoning. Which get's to my next point...
  • Assumption wise on pentagram/magic circles? They're likely your campfires, to summon/recruit more monsters. And you likely will be doing so, when they're being killed by heroic adventurers.
    • Of which, assumption wise? Any retired adventurer that went to the guards during your first playthrough? You might end up fighting them the higher you ascend.
Now. Past how having good map drawing skills will be handy, on the reverse crawl to the entrance from part 1?

Fun fact. Leinad's ascent, also has a battle theme that's a rocking shoutout to Shin Megami Tensei series.
