Disco Elysium Basic Gameplay Tips I Wish I Knew

0:00 Gameplay Basics
I wish I knew these tips when I started playing Disco Elysium. They’ll help without spoiling any insane twists or mysteries in the game.

Use detective mode to see things you can interact with.
Single click to walk there or double click to run.
Take everything you find, all the clothes, all the money, all the tare, everything!
Postcards should be sold but other items can help you in your quest.

0:21 Equip the Bag
Once you find the bag, it allows you to collect tare which can be returned to the Fritte store for a little extra money. Now if you go into your inventory and equip the bag, you’ll find more tare in the environment that would otherwise be hidden.

0:32 Skip Time Forward
Time advances slowly while in dialogue, if you want to skip forward faster, you have 3 options:
-You can sit on a bench but this is only available when Kim’s not around,
-Thus you might need to buy and read a book from the bookstore to pass time easily,
-or, once you find your clipboard, you can keep rereading your case notes over and over.

0:48 Health and Morale
Your health and morale are located in the bottom left corner and the numbers above indicate how many healing items you have left and how to activate them.
Upgrading Volition increases your Morale bar, while Endurance increases your Health. If you save often and stay away from drugs and alcohol, these shouldn’t be too hard to manage.

1:04 Time to Sleep
Go to sleep any time after 21.00 hours, this heals all health and morale when you wake up.
Kim also likes to go to bed at 21.00 hours meaning you can continue with some activities you might not want him to see.
At night the streets become emptier and everyone’s asleep by 2.00.

1:18 Fast Travel
Once you've purchased the map from the book store, you can fast travel between 3 locations but only while standing in front of the Whirling-in-Rags, the shack in the Fishing Village, or the Church.

Disco Elysium Secret Gameplay Tips I Wish I Knew

0:00 Red and White Checks
Red and White checks are influenced by the stat mentioned in the box. Put on clothes that buff the needed stat and consider Quick Saving before you attempt one since you can easily retry if you fail.

A red check can only be attempted once and if you fail, it’s gone for good! These normally affect the main story but failing isn’t always completely bad so don’t stress it too much.

White checks can be tried multiple times, if it gets locked and you can’t reload for some reason, all you need to do is put a stat point in that category to unlock it and try again. Sometimes your actions and dialogue in game can also unlock these white checks without using a skill point.

Since white checks are not crucial for the story, I liked to save my stat points and wait to find better clothes before I attempted most of them and you can see a list of all checks you have access to from the map screen.

Note that rolling a double 6 will always win while rolling a double 1 will always lose. In this way, you can win even the lowest chance checks if you’re willing to save and restart a bunch!

At the end of the video I’ll reveal a secret about the bunker door you might be wondering about.

0:56 Drugs, Alcohol, Electrochemistry
If you take drugs or alcohol, they raise a stat for 1 in game hour at the cost of one point of health or morale damage. If you equip the substance, you’ll continuously take more when the high wears off.
Substances have 3 charges but if you upgrade Electrochemistry to 4, it’ll grant an extra charge and if you upgrade to 7, you get another charge on top of that.
If you failed a white check for a stat that you already have maxed, these substances might be the only thing that’ll unlock the failed white check, unless you’re lucky enough to unlock it via some dialogue or story event later on.

1:30 Thoughts and Thought Cabinet
Link to Disco Elysium Thoughts Wiki[discoelysium.fandom.com]

Final tips are about thoughts and the bunker door:
Based on some events and actions in the game, you may get a thought which needs a skill point to equip in your menu. You also use skill points to increase your thought cabinet slots and to remove thoughts that you may not want anymore.

I’ve linked the Disco Elysium Thoughts wiki below to help you determine which ones you want to pursue and note that sometimes equipping a thought will apply a debuff while you're thinking before they blossom into their true effect later on. Here’s a few I recommend:

You can get The Fifteenth Indotribe early on by talking with Joyce Messier about Wild Pines. Pick the response: "8 percent of *all* cargo in the world”. There’s no penalty for thinking about this thought and when done you get 10 cents for every one of these green environment things you find.

You can also go for The Jamrock Shuffle which you get after breaking and entering three locked locations. Once completed, this thought increases the amount of real you find in locked containers.

2:20 Open Bunker Door?
Now, once you find the Bunker door, you apparently have a very small chance to open it. Remember how rolling a double six always wins, well you’ll find out that this door in fact cannot be opened even if you get a double 6! What you get instead is a thought for your trouble but it ultimately reduces your Half-Light by one while unlocking all Psyche White Checks and I didn’t need this at all in my run!
