Introduction
This guide is design to help people struggling to build a bridge over railtracks or have intention to do it for better city planning and less cluttery in the way of the rails.

Here you will get instructions on how to build a bridge easily and efficient. You can comment if you feel anything is missing in this guide regarding about bridges.
Birth of a bridge
First choose which type of road you want to use. I recommend medium street, they the most flexible. You can start with a small or large street, just as you prefer.

Then you must find a proper location where you want to start. The image below is where we going to build a bridge.

Now we going to make a start point. The image below is where we want to start the bridge.

As you can see, the bridge on the right is already there, we want this bridge to look exacly as the bridge on the right.

Make sure you start far away from the rails, because the bridge will need extra space for the height and ground filling. As you see, make use of maximum elevation. Draw in in the direction where the bridge must go over. About $12K is a good indication to show you draw the roadpiece long enough.

Now we going to do it on the other side the same as in the image below.

Make sure the road segment is inline with the other segment on the other side. This means the bridge will be straight, not on a curve.

Then you connect the road pieces together and voila, the bridge is drawn as in the image below.

You can see the extra ground filling added. That is why you must draw the roads far enough from the tracks. You also can see the dialog box of different bridges, choose the model which you like the most or fit.

Now we can say the bridge on the right looks exacly as the one on the left. The following link contain a video on how to build the bridge.

The second method to build a bridge is to use the N & M keys. This method is much simpler, but not so flexible as the first method.

First we select an area of construction.

Then we draw a road of choice. Drag it all over to the other side.

Then press the M key, you should see the road lift till it change into a bridge

And you got a bridge. This method is much simpler, but if it does not work in a certain scenario, try the first method. It always work if areas has different elevations.
Birth of an underpass
Here I will instruct on how to build a proper underpass. Underpasses is more difficult to build, but easier if in cramped city or space.

We going to build an underpass at this spot.

You have to bulldoze the tracks, but if it happens that the track segments is to long as in the image below, put swiches in.

The swiches will break up the segments into shorter ones and then bulldoze it as in the images below.

Then you choose the medium street, a small one won't work, but we must put it later in. Draw the segment of road and then press the N button to lower the road as necessarily.

You will see a opening where you can draw the tracks back.

But before you put the train bridges back, remove the big road sement and then put the small street segment, because there must be some place for the bridge pillars. Then you can draw the bridges back.

The final underpass.
Creation of Railroad Bridge
Here I will instruct on how to create a railroad bridge efficiently when you want to cross the tracks without making switches.

We will select this spot to create the railroad bridge.

You must select a starting point. The starting point must be far from the rail which you want to cross to give maximum room for clearance. Drag the railpiece and then select the elevation button. Choose maximum elevation to lift railtrack before the crossing.

Then drag further, but select elevation again to make it even.

Drag the railpiece further and select elevation for maximum downwards. Select the greenbox to finish.

The finished product.

Extra images
Below is images of different bridges build in different scenarios. Some are beautiful, others looks horrid.

Last Note
This method is something you will try and try and fail, but you will eventually get the hang of it. Practice makes perfect is the motto.

I hope you will find this guide helpful and add any comments if you want me to add or do regarding bridges.

Oh, and happy bridge building like a civil engineer!

Nah! I can't get this to work. Just constant terrain collisions and other excuses. Why can't the programme just adjust the terrain like Cities in Motion. This is way too fiddly.

Yes, I've been using that but I find when I use it I tend to get a bridge thats much bigger than i really need. I may try the land raising technique you described first, as it seems to produce a neat result. I also liked the underpass which was quite compact.

@Didz I hope you get your bridges right. Always remember, you have M and N to your disposal to increase or decrease the roads height.

Can't wait to try some of these techiques. My bridges are a mess at the minute.

Brilliant, thank you so much - I was getting very perplexed and managed to kill a mouse (not animal!) in my vexation

2 patches ago I couldn't cross road over rail or vice versa to save my sorry [train horn honk].
Thank you for taking YOUR free time out of YOUR day to HELP US with what is not always a very straight forward aspect of this game. My problem with bridge/roads and crossings was so prevelant that the only reason anyone took my trains at all was because I had to knock out all the roads to build them - bwahaha. Tis the season to be thankful and that I am - Thank you very much sir! New patch just in as of 12/16/2014 so get back in the hot seat and try the game out again now with AUTOREPLACE old vehicles!
