Introduction
- And best of all, it has been scientifically proven to improve weight loss by 21%.

The bastard child of the franchise. I'm not sure why they had to give up on all the lore and redefine the characters. And yes, turn cool Dante into some sort of teenage brat. But well, if you can look past this, I think it's actually a pretty good game. Just not really a DMC game, besides some references here and there. Gameplay is smooth, enemies and levels are cool. There are a couple annoying things here and there, but not that much. As for getting the achievements, it's not particularly difficult nor time-consuming, absolutely nothing in comparison with DMC4.
Difficulty System
- I spray, you bring the roof down.

The game works with automatic saves. But unlike DMC4 for example, you can start from scratch by using a new save slot.

There are 7 difficulty modes.
  • The Devil May Cry difficulties (Human, Devil Hunter, and Nephilim) are joined, in the sense that progress in any of those difficulties unlocks the next mission in the others as well. So you can switch between them at any time during your first playthrough.
  • Son of Sparda. Harder and with different enemy waves, etc. Unlocked by completing a playthrough in any Devil May Cry difficulty.
  • Dante Must Die. The hardest of the main difficulty levels. Enemies can Devil Trigger. Unlocked by completing Son of Sparda.
  • Heaven Or Hell. Everything dies in one hit. Unlocked by completing Son of Sparda.
  • Hell and Hell. Your character dies in one hit but enemies are like in Son of Sparda. Unlocked by completing Dante Must Die.

The Mission Select screen is always available, to replay any mission on any difficulty (provided you've already completed that mission on that specific difficulty). You can also switch costumes at any time between Missions. The only costume that affects gameplay is Super Dante (or Super Vergil in the DLC), which is unlocked by completing Dante Must Die. It gives you infinite Devil Trigger, but reduces your mission score by half.

Controls
In principle, you can set your controls in-game via the Options menu. Notably, you want to use a trigger to shoot etc. The problem is that there are a couple combo keys that cannot be changed for some reason. You have however more flexibility by editing the ini files, as explained in the following guide. Highly recommended to do this before starting to play. Note that the ideal setup is not the same for Dante and Vergil.

Noteworthy Achievements
- Why am I doing this for a crusty old demon? Oh yeh, that’s why.

Note that there are multiple achievements that are not instant but will be completed progressively (e.g. kill X enemies in a certain way). A nice feature is that you can track that progress in the game itself (from the menu, go into Extras and then either Achievements or Stats).

As usual, you must complete the game on all difficulties. One of the Devil May Cry difficulties, Son of Sparda, Dante Must Die, Heaven or Hell, and Hell and Hell. You're in for at least 5 playthroughs. Dante Must Die is probably the hardest (except maybe for one of the missions in Hell and Hell). But it's not so difficult either since the game autosaves frequently. When you die, at worst you have to repeat the last fight.

You must find all the Collectibles. This can be done in any difficulty or across several playthroughs in different difficulties. The Mission Guides below will help you find everything. There are Lost Souls to free, various types of Keys to open all the Doors to the Secret Missions (which must all be completed for other achievements). All of this is also necessary to max out Dante's Health and Devil Trigger Bar for more achievements. And you need to purchase all of Dante's skills, but that's going to happen naturally after a few playthroughs.

The usual SSS-rank achievement is back. But thankfully this must be done only on one difficulty (Nephilim) and not all of them individually. SSS-rank depends on the percent of Collectibles collected, but once collected, things stay collected, so you don't have to worry about it anymore. For the rest, the Style and Time thresholds are generally not too difficult to respect, so this is not a very complicated achievement. For most missions, SSS-rank can be attained on the first try (after you've collected everything).

There are a few achievements that are each like a mini-challenge within a specific mission. Those are generally not too difficult to achieve, especially since you can always restart from the previous checkpoint if you fail. They are all noted in the Mission Guides below. You can try to get them on your first playthrough, or not worry about it and get them on subsequent playthroughs (which in some cases makes it a lot easier, like killing enemies quickly in Heaven or Hell).

This one is probably one of the last achievements you'll get in the main game. Completing all the other playthroughs in all difficulties, and SSS-ranking Nephilim got me to around 4200 kills. Don't worry about it until everything else is done, and then farm Mission 10 in Heaven or Hell for the rest of the kills. It should be noted that this is main game only and kills in Vergil's DLC do not count. There are some other achievements for killing a certain number of enemies with firearms or different types of weapons, but the number of kills required is much smaller. A great feature is that you can see your progress in the game itself (from the menu, go into Extras and then either Achievements or Stats).

Vergil's Downfall DLC is basically a separate game, with 6 missions instead of 20. There are several achievements attached to this DLC, which are identical to the principal ones for Dante in the main game: fully upgrade Vergil, get 100% completion, complete all difficulties, SSS-rank Nephilim.

Roadmap
- You’ll have to go up five stories of hell. I hope you make it. It’s gonna be tough
- She was right, this is hell.

First Playthrough
If you like your first playthrough to be blind (or at least not follow a guide every step of the way), go ahead and have fun, it won't cost you in the long term, since a lot of collectibles and secrets are not accessible the first time through, and all missions will have to be repeated multiple times anyway.

Don't worry about the difficulty. You can pick either Human, Devil Hunter, or Nephilim, and change at will between missions. Nephilim is recommended, because you might already achieve an SSS rank on some missions (usually the boss fight missions that don't have collectibles). And since there is an achievement for SSS-ranking all missions on Nephilim, you won't have to repeat those. But then again, those missions are very short (3-5 min), so it won't make much difference.

Vergil's Downfall
The DLC is basically a separate, smaller (6 missions) but independent game. Vergil's achievements are essentially identical to those for Dante in the main game (fully upgrade, full completion, beat harder difficulties, SSS-rank missions on Nephilim). You have basically two ways to go about it:
  • Ignore the DLC for now, and complete the rest of the Roadmap below with Dante in the main game. Then come back to the beginning of the Roadmap and follow it with Vergil.

  • For each step in the Roadmap, complete it with Dante in the main game, and then for Vergil in the DLC. You'll be playing alternatively with Dante and Vergil, which might make it a bit more difficult to perfect your playstyle with either, and you may also have to switch the controls. But it could reduce the repetitiveness of the missions.

Son of Sparda: Collectibles and Secret Missions cleanup
Following the Mission Guides below, go pick up all the collectibles that you missed, open all the doors, and complete all Secret Missions. Also try to complete the few mission-specific achievements (see in Mission Guides).

All collectibles and secret doors are shared across all difficulties. So if you pick something up once, it won't appear on any re-play, and you can therefore chose any difficulty for this collectible cleanup. Doing this in Son of Sparda means that you're not wasting time, but also that you won't start it fully upgraded. But Son of Sparda is not particularly hard, and the game autosaves very frequently so (unless you want an SSS-rank), the penalty for dying is not too harsh.

SSS-rank Nephilim
Once you've achieved 100% completion on all missions (freed all lost souls, found all the keys and opened all the doors), it's time to SSS-rank. This is not too difficult, and in most cases the Style and Time thresholds can be respected easily and the SSS-rank can be achieved on the first attempt. The last mission is a bit more complicated as you have to learn the moves and vulnerabilities of the boss to kill it quickly enough and without getting hit too much. See the SSS-rank section below for more details and the Style and Time thresholds.

Heaven or Hell
Enemies die in one hit, and so do you. Except that you have 3 yellow orbs, so technically you die in 4 hits. And even if you die, you restart at the last checkpoint, usually just before the fight. So overall, this is mostly a walk in the park. You can shoot your way forward. But there are enemies that won't simply go down with one bullet. For the ones with a shield, you need to pull it first to expose them. For the blue/red enemies you must use angelic or demonic weapons.

Dante Must Die
It's more difficult but, here again, at worst you'll restart at the last checkpoint. You might need a few Vital/Devil Stars and Yellow Orbs here and there. But after SSS-ranking Nephilim and completing Heaven or Hell, you should have more than enough red orbs. Otherwise, you can farm Mission 20 (or Mission 5 in Vergil's Downfall) in Heaven or Hell.

Hell and Hell
This can be more tricky if you want to do it legit. However, having completed Dante Must Die, you have access to Super Dante. So you can do all the fights in Devil Tigger mode, which makes it trivial to a point that it might get boring. Using the super costume will reduce your mission score by 50%, but you don't need to SSS-rank the missions.

  • Mission 20 in the main game might require several attempts. Unfortunately, if you die you restart the whole fight and not the last phase that you reached. So you need to learn the enemy's moves and moments of vulnerabilities. At least the doppelgangers are affected (and float around) by your Devil Trigger mode, so the end of the fight is not too complicated.

  • Mission 5 in Vergil's Downfall can be even more frustrating, for the same reasons and also because the enemy is kinda cheap. Again, learn his moves and counteract with Killer Bee, Dive/Stomp and some basic combos like Slasher or Divorce. If you manage to stagger him, you can spam Aerial Flush to keep him that way. During the 2nd and 3rd rounds, make sure to have Spiral Swords active permanently (many attacks will just take out the swords instead of killing you), stay at a distance and wait for opportunities to catch him in Aerial Flush spam.
Mission Guides
- So this was my home. Well, show me your secrets.

Required Abilities
There are a number of things in the early missions that will not be accessible the first time through, since you haven't yet acquired the necessary abilities. The image below shows the required abilities and the missions when you will acquire them. In addition, Angel Boost (Mission 3) is necessary to make some jumps.

Secret Missions
There are 21 Secret Missions. Some may require a few attempts, but none of those are particularly difficult, so I won't detail them. The Secret Missions can be unlocked by opening Copper / Argent / Gold / Ivory Doors during the story missions. You will only be able to open a Door if you have previously acquired a corresponding Copper / Argent / Gold / Ivory Key.

Once the Door is open, the Secret Mission can be accessed and played from the main menu as well. So you don't necessarily have to play it during the mission. The difficulty of the Secret Missions DO NOT depend on the difficulty of the playthrough from which they are accessed.
Mission Guides (1-4)
Mission 1 - Found
  • Lost Soul #1 (Requires Eryx). After the first fight with your guns, and talking to Kat, to the right behind a red crystal.

  • Lost Soul #2 and Copper Key. A bit further, you will see the Lost Soul on a window right in the middle of the path. Then follow the wooden platforms to the left to grab the Key.

  • It's only the rain. You'll start a fight in an area with a carousel. You can send enemies flying (e.g. with Hightime) into the moving part of the carousel. You need to kill 10 enemies this way for the achievement. It is cumulative across playthroughs, so just make sure to get at least a few ones each time. On second playthrough, you can also Devil Trigger them all in the air.

  • Vital Star S (Requires Angel Lift). After the carousel fight, grab and follow the blue grips on the left.

  • Gold Orb. In the middle of the way. Hard to miss.

  • Vital Star S and Lost Soul #3 (Requires Angel Lift). Go to the right past the carousel with horses. The Vital Star will be sitting there in a dead end passage. Grab and follow the blue grips nearby to reach the Lost Soul.

  • Copper Door (Secret Mission #1 - Air Brawl). Inside the building, in a corridor to the right after escaping the hand.

  • Lost Souls #4-6 (#5 Requires Arbiter). You'll soon reach an area with some giant dolls and a stairway that goes down. To the right before the stairway, you'll find #4 and then #5 a bit further behind red scratches. To the left before the stairway, go past the giant doll to find #6 above the entrance in a circular room.

Mission 2 - Home Truths
  • Lost Soul #1 (Requires Angel Lift). Before going up the stairs in the Main Hall, drop down in a small passage on the left. There will be a blue grip to access a room on the right side.

  • Copper Key. In the Main Hall, take the stairs to the right, the Key is in a room on the upper floor.

  • Lost Soul #2 (Requires Aquila). Take the stairs to the left. Just after the Divinity Statue, blue vines are visible past some broken floors on the right side.

  • Lost Souls #3-4. (#3 requires Angel Boost). After the fights in the room with Sparda's portrait, exit and you'll see #3 in front of you. Then drop down for #4.

  • Argent Key (Requires Eryx). A bit further in the same area, stomp the red crystal on the floor.

  • Lost Souls #5-6 (#6 requires Osiris). Back in the Main Hall, up the stairs to the right, #5 is just behind and above the door with red scratches. A few corridors further, #6 is behind blue vines.

  • Copper Door (Secret Mission #3 - Simple Eradication) and Vital Star S (Requires Eryx). Back in the mansion after an otherworldly experience. Drop down in the next room, where you'll see the Door, and a red crystal to stomp for the Vital Star.

  • Lost Soul #7. In the next room, Before using Demon Pull on some red grips, turn around and look up.

  • Lost Soul #8. After leaving the room with Eva's portrait, in the room behind the blue vines on the left, before the Divinity Statue.

  • Lost Soul #9 and Copper Door (Secret Mission #8 - Stylish Victory) (both require Angel Boost). Next you'll do some outdoors platforming, go through the red scratches and some blue vines. Just after that, there is a small room past some broken floor on the right.

Mission 3 - Bloodline
  • Vital Star S. After the first fight, take the passage to the right just before the exit.

  • Copper Key. Take the passage to the left just before the exit, the Key is behind red scratches near the Divinity Statue.

  • Lost Soul #1. After the cutscene with Kat where the ground opens, turn around and look up.

  • Lost Soul #2 (Requires Aquila). After the second fight in the square, look up for some blue vines. Use Round Trip.

  • Lost Soul #3 and Argent Door (Secret Mission #11 - What Goes Around) (both require Angel Boost). On your way up to the blue rose in the middle of the square, you'll notice the Lost Soul and the Door on separate platforms, which can be accessed after acquiring the Angel Boost ability.

Mission 4 - Under Watch
  • Lost Soul #1. After the first fight, under the arches on the right.

  • Lost Soul #2. Before taking out the first eye-camera, on a high wall at the point of the intersection.

  • Vital Star S and Lost Soul #3. When you proceed, the ground will open and you will be directed towards some stairs going down on the right side. But first, check out the stairs going up on the left side.

  • Argent Key (Requires Eryx). Turn right into a dead end, directly after going down the stairs.

  • Lost Souls #4-5 and Gold Key. After the fight in a small square with a fountain. Both Souls are on high walls around the square. You can reach #4 by jumping from the fountain. For #5, you must use the blue grip nearby to reach a terrace and jump from there. The Gold Key is in a building accessible from that same terrace.

  • Lost Soul #6 and Copper Door (Secret Mission #2 - Simple Traversal). You'll soon reach another Y-shaped intersection. After clearing out the enemies, take the path to the right and use the blue grip to reach a balcony. The Lost Soul is on a high wall a bit further, and the Copper Door behind blue vines on the left.

  • Argent Door (Secret Mission #13 - Flawless Conquest). Backtrack across the balconies towards the intersection to take out the camera-eye. The Door can be reached with Angel Boost and another blue grip.

  • Lost Souls #7-8. After Demon pulling some stairs with Kat, make your way up to a small terrace. #7 is behind the red scratches, and #8 is on a high wall across the street.

Mission Guides (5-8)
Mission 5 - Virility
  • Lost Soul #1. Start climbing up the containers and go to the left side of this vertically expanded warehouse. You'll reach a small platform with a few enemies. After the fight, look back towards the entrance. The Soul is on the side of a container and can be accessed via blue grips.

  • Copper Key and Lost Soul #2. Keep climbing and you'll go through a container and reach a larger platform for another fight. Afterwards, look for the the Key behind a fence on the right side (climb on the boxes nearby). From the other side of the platform, follow the blue grips for the Lost Soul.

  • Copper Door (Secret Mission #4 - Demonic Conflict). Proceed until you reach a Divinity Statue. Climb the pile of boxes a bit further on the right and you will see the Door on a platform on the left side.

  • Lost Soul #3. When you reach the next expanded warehouse area, you'll have to defeat a couple enemies and use Demon Pull. Just after that, look inside the container to the right.

  • Lost Souls #4-6 (#6 requires Aquila). Keep climbing until our reach a large platform for another fight. Dispatch the enemies and the exit will open up. But first, go to the right side (when facing the exit) of that platform to find #4. Then go on the left side, and climb up to the higher level for #5. From there, you will see some blue vines on a container: use Round Trip then follow the blue grips for #6.

  • Argent Key. Go back to the higher level of that platform (where you found #5), and to the right (when facing the exit). You should see the Key in the distance. Follow the blue/red grips and you'll fall on a platform with Eryx crystals (only red orbs in there). Some more blue grips will lead you to the Key.

  • Vital Star S. After a fight in a large square room, proceed down the corridor and turn right at the first intersection. You will see blue vines in the distance, past a 4-way intersection.

  • Argent Door (Secret Mission #16 - Displaced Skirmish). From the Vital Star, backtrack towards the 4-way intersection, turn left and go past two pools of green liquid on the ground. Watch out for red scratches on the left.

Mission 6 - Secret Ingredient
  • A Man with Guts and Honor. The first part of the mission is a platform traversal with a time limit. Some enemies spawn here and there, and there is an achievement for killing them all (the only potential issue being the limited time). It might be worth doing anyway while SSS-ranking the mission, but otherwise don't worry about it since it is trivial in Heaven or Hell.

  • Copper Key. At the very start of the mission, turn around.

  • Lost Soul #1. After using Demon Pull and following the next blue grips, look up on the left side.

  • Lost Soul #2 and Copper Door (Secret Mission #6 - Rapid Descent). After the timed section, you'll enter a tunnel. When you get out, look on the left to find the Soul on a column. A bit further, past the Divinity Statue, the Door is on a platform on the left.

Mission 7 - Overturn
  • Lost Soul #1. After reaching the Penitentiary, keep platforming until the next red crystal. Before going through, look to the left.

  • Copper Key and Lost Soul #2 (both require Aquila). After the first two blue grips with boost, look up to the right for blue vines. Use round trip and follow the blue grips.

  • Gold Door (Secret Mission #17 - Divergent Slaughter), Lost Soul #3, and Vital Star L. From the place where you saw the blue vines, go to the left and Demon Pull the container. Jump on it, then turn around to see the Door and the Soul in a fenced area. Then return to the container and punch the red crystals for the Vital Star.

  • Argent Key. Proceed until the Divinity Statue, then look to the left for a platform with a blue grip.

  • Lost Souls #4-5. After encountering the Rage enemy, jump up the broken wall and look behind you for #4. Proceed to the next area with an elevator, and follow the platform on the right side for #5.

  • Lost Soul #6. Go up the ramps. After a fight and two more blue grips (when you reach the top level), look behind you and follow these platforms around the elevator, using Angel Boost.

  • Lost Soul #7. In the next room after riding down the elevator, on the right side.

  • Copper Door (Secret Mission #5 - Angelic Warfare), Copper Key and Lost Soul #8, Stomp the crystal and you'll have a fight. The Door is on the platform where you fought. Then use the blue grip to go up, and look behind you for the Key. Proceed to the Divinity Statue; the Lost Soul is on the right side.

Mission 8 - Eyeless
  • Lost Soul #1 and Copper Door (Secret Mission #7 - A Taste of Heaven) (both require Aquila). After breaking through the first red crystal wall, look to the right for some blue vines.

  • Vital Star S. Behind the next red crystal wall.

  • Lost Soul #2. Directly to your left when you enter the railway tunnel.

  • Argent Key. After the first fight, do not take the opening on the left just yet, but continue through the railway tunnel and then turn right, you'll reach some blue vines.

  • Lost Soul #3 and Argent Door (Secret Mission #12 - Moderate Traversal). Just past the Divinity Statue: the Soul is in an alcove on the right side, the Door is in an alcove on the left side, behind red scratches.

  • Lost Souls #4-5. After dropping down in a large circular room, and before doing anything else, follow the blue grips on both sides (with labels "Platform 1" and "Platform 2").

Mission Guides (9-12)
Mission 9 - Devil Inside
  • Lost Soul #1. After going through the red scratches at the end of the bridge, you will pass in front of the Soul behind a fence. It can be accessed through the blue vines.

  • Gold Key. After a detour in another world, you'll end up in a large square room for some fights. The Key is on a balcony high up. You must use the enemies to access it (preferably the second wave). You can go pretty much as high as you like by repeating either Demon Pull + Enemy Step, or Angel Lift + Payoff.

  • Devil Star S (requires Aquila). A few blue grips later, you'll reach a Divinity Statue. Turn around and look up for the blue vines.

  • Lost Soul #2. When you reach the next building, you will see the Soul behind a window. You can reach it by jumping and Angel boosting around the wall on the right of the entrance (there is a small platform on the other side).

  • Gold Door (Secret Mission #20 - Subsistence). In the same building, hard to miss.

Mission 10 - Bad News
Nothing here, have fun!

Mission 11 - The Order
  • Vital Star S In the first building, after the Divinity Statue and some blue vines, you'll see other blue vines across a broken floor.

  • Lost Soul #1. Just after the Vital Star, drop down and the Soul is in a small adjacent room.

  • Lost Soul #2. After entering the underground base, and waiting for some metallic doors to open, you'll end up in a circular room with blue vines upfront. The soul is on the wall on the left side.

  • Copper Door (Secret Mission #10 - The Power Within). Move on to through the blue vines, for some more fights in the next room. After that you have to rush through the corridors of the base, because the Door will soon become inaccessible. Go left, run until the end of the corridor, then turn right (ignoring the red scratches on your left side). Smash through the Eryx crystals then go left and just a bit further on your left, there will be a door that is closing. Once you get through it, it will stop closing, so you can relax and explore.

  • Lost Souls #3-6 and Copper Key, Backtrack towards the entrance of the area: #3 is in the room that you passed just before the door that was closing, and #4 is behind the red scratches that you ignored. Just past the entrance, you will see a red light at the end of the corridor, #5 is to the right. Then take the corridor to the left and check out the right side for #6. Keep going forward, and go through the black broken wall at the end for the Key.

  • Devil Star S Return to the door that was closing (and the Copper Door), and proceed past a Divinity Statue. The Star is just a bit further on the left side.

  • Lost Soul #7. In thee next room, a fight will trigger. Move towards the circular part of the area, and check above the arch for the Soul. You have to use the enemies to reach it (Demon Pull + Enemy Step, or Angel Lift + Payoff).

Mission 12 - Under Siege
Nothing here, have fun!
Mission Guides (13-16)
Mission 13 - Devil's Dalliance
  • Lost Souls #1-2, Gold Key, and Ivory Door (Secret Mission #21 - Shenanigans). After the first fights, the area will open up and you'll be facing a Divinity Statue and a ramp. Turn around and look up for #1 above the entrance. From there, facing away from the entrance, you will see the Key on a platform to the right, and the Door on a platform to the left. Both can be accessed via blue grips. Soul #2 is under the ramp.

  • Lost Soul #3. After stomping the first Play square, take the path to the right. The Soul is behind a column on a nearby platform.

  • Vital Star S. After Round 2 (a timed fight), you'll reach another fork. Take the stairs that go up on the left and climb the floating boxes a bit further. One of those has a Play square that you can stomp. Follow the path it opens via more floating boxes and a blue grip.

  • Lost Soul #4. After Round 3, stomp the Play square and the room will turn blue. The Soul is on one of the walls.

  • Lost Soul #5. After Round 4, you'll have to choose between two greenish translucent paths. Take the one to the left and look out for a platform with a blue grip on the right side. Follow the path from there.

  • Argent Door (Secret Mission #15 - Hasty Acquisition), Lost Soul #6, and Devil Star S. After Round 5, you'll climb some red stairs and reach a Divinity Statue. Drop down on the left side for the Door. Then look up for a platform with a blue grip in front of the Statue. Follow that path to find the Soul and the Star.

  • Lost Soul #7. Proceed from the Divinity Statue. After a few jumps you'll reach a platform with a Play square. The Soul is on a wall on the same platform.

Mission 14 - Last Dance
Nothing here, have fun!

Mission 15 - The Trade
  • Where does the time go?. There is an achievement for completing a level in less than 2 minutes. This is the best mission to obtain it, as it is very short and the combat encounters can be skipped.

  • Copper Key. At the beginning of the level, just after stomping 3 times on a stack of containers. Before following the next blue grips, jump over the containers on the left.

  • Vital Star S and Copper Key. After rushing through a collapsing street via blue grips, you'll land on a platform just in front of a bus that you need to Demon Pull. Look to the right for blue vines where you'll find the Star. Then pull the bus, and look to the left for the Key on a higher platform.

Mission 16 - The Plan
  • Lost Soul #1 and Vital Star S. Once inside the tower and past the Divinity Statue, before taking the elevator, go through the red scratches on the right.

  • Lost Souls #2-3 and Gold Key. When you reach floor 105, just after your second elevator ride, go to the right and around the back of the elevator.

  • Lost Soul #4 and Gold Door (Secret Mission #18 - Extreme Traversal). After making your way up to floor 106 via blue grips, you'll have to fight in front of the elevators. After the fight, go once again around the back of the elevator. You'll find an access to the staircase. Go up for the Soul, then all the way down for the Door.

  • Devil Star S and Lost Souls #5-7. Proceed on floor 106 until the next blue grips. Before following those, drop down on the floor below. After a fight, go to the large desk in the middle of the room. The Star is on top of it. Looking back from the desk, you will see #5 in a room on the right, and a closed elevator on the left. Approach that elevator and it will open to reveal #6 and #7.

  • Now my coat's all charred. You will have to pass through a skybridge with red lasers. There is an achievement for going through without hitting the lasers. Stand in front, jump and Angel boost at the right time. It's not very difficult, but if you fail you can just restart from checkpoint (it will count as a death, so not recommended during SSS-rank attempts).

  • Lost Soul #8. After exiting the skybridge with lasers, go to the left.

  • Lost Soul #9. After receiving the Kablooey, proceed through the hallway and fight some enemies until you reach the door to the next skybridge on your right. Before taking it, go straight ahead for the Soul.

  • Copper Door (Secret Mission #9 - Bait and Switch). After exiting the collapsing skybridge. Go past and around the elevators.

Mission Guides (17-20)
Mission 17 - Furnace of Souls
  • Every hero has a weakness. There is an achievement for completing this level without taking damage from the furnace. It is not too difficult as long as you are patient enough. If you get hit by the fire at any point, you can reload from the previous checkpoint.

  • Vital Star S and Lost Soul #1. At the beginning of the mission, take the path to the right. You'll soon have to fight on a small platform. Afterwards, you'll see the Vital Star next to a tree on a platform forward, and the Soul on another platform to the left. Go pick up the Star, then return for the Soul, which can be accessed via red+blue grips.

  • Lost Soul #2. Facing Lost Soul #1, go left and follow the platforms. #2 is behind a wall on the second platform you'll reach.

  • Lost Soul #3. Proceed until you reach a larger platform for several rounds of fighting. Afterwards, check out the right (when facing the wall) side of the area.

  • Ivory Key. Next you'll navigate a few small platforms via blue and red grips, and land under an arch. Look to the right side for more blue grips, which will lead you to blue vines and the Key.

  • Lost Soul #4 and Gold Door (Secret Mission #19 - A Day in Hell). Keep going until you reach a Divinity Statue. One the next platform, after a small fight you can free the Soul on the wall. If you look in the distance on the left side of the wall, you will see the Door. Find a red grip nearby, and pull it to open the way.

  • Devil Star L. After a couple of blue grips with green boost, it is on a platform next to where you landed.

  • Lost Soul #5. You will eventually reach a much bigger platform/arena and fight several waves of enemies. Once that's done, follow the first set of blue grips and look around the rock/column on the right side.

Mission 18 - Demon's Den
  • Vital Star S. At the beginning of the mission, turn around.

  • Lost Soul #1. You are in a circular room with four tunnels to explore. Starting with the first tunnel on the right side from the entrance. When you reach the generator, look for a higher platform on the left side.

  • Argent Key. In the second tunnel on the right, there will be a large gap on the floor. Instead of jumping over it, look down and you'll see a passage going to the left. Drop down and follow it.

  • Lost Soul #2. In the first tunnel on the left (next to the Divinity Statue), you'll have to jump down on some platforms. But before that, look up to the right. You can reach it with double jump and Angel Boost.

  • Lost Soul #3 and Argent Door (Secret Mission #14 - Colossal Triumph). In the second tunnel on the left. Once the tunnel opens up, you'll find the Soul on a small platform to the right, and the Door is clearly visible on the left.

  • Health Cross Fragment #2. As you exit the building, Demon Pull a platform and proceed, then look on your right side, back to the building you just exited. Angel Boost on the nearby platform to reach it.

  • Lost Soul #2. Proceed to the left and you will see an Angel grip. The Soul is on another platform further to the left of the Angel grip.

  • Health Cross Fragment #3. After using the Angel grip, you will be in a hallway with a collapsed floor. Jump over the gap, and destroy the wooden door on the right side.

  • Lost Soul #3. After some fights, you'll reach a Divinity Statue. The Soul is in a small corridor to the left, just before the statue.

  • Vital Star S. After exiting the building, look for a cracked wall on the right side. You can reach it with Jump - Trick Up - Angel Boost through the crack.

  • Health Cross Fragment #4. Proceed by jumping on platforms. Two platforms after using Demon Pull, look for the Fragment behind a wall on the right side.

  • Lost Soul #4. A bit further you'll have two consecutive Angel grips. After the second, look back and jump down on a small platform just below the Angel grip.

Mission 2 - Hollow
  • Health Cross Fragment #1. After the first fight, you will pass under a large archway. Before following the Angel grip, you should be able to see the Fragment on a small platform up on the left. Reach it by climbing on a piece of broken building on the right.

  • Health Cross Fragment #2. After going through a portal, you will be in front of a Divinity Statue, with two possible paths. First, go to the right of the statue and follow the platforms until you reach a large archway. The Fragment is on the left side of it. Take it and backtrack to the Divinity Statue.

  • Lost Soul #1. Go to the left of the Divinity Statue and follow the platforms until you reach a larger platform. Look for a staircase descending on the right side, the Soul is next to it.

  • Health Cross Fragment #3 and Vital Star L. Look on the left side of the same platform. You should see the Fragment standing next to a small hallway. Grab the Fragment, then follow this hallway to a portal. The portal will take you higher up, in front of a platform with the Vital Star. You can then simply drop down to continue.

  • Lost Soul #2. Proceed until you pass under another large archway. You should hear the Soul, which is on top of it. Reach it via an Angel grip on the back side of the archway (after passing under it).

  • Lost Soul #3. A bit further, after some Angel grips with boosts, go to the left just before another archway. You will see the Soul on the wall, near a cascade of lava.

  • Health Cross. Continue the mission. After some fights and two more portals, you will reach an open area with platforms and rocks dropping from above. The Health Cross is on a platform with an obelisk, on the right side.

Mission 3 - Power Struggle
  • Lost Soul #1. At the start of the mission, jump on the platforms and take the path on the right. After passing under a small archway, look back and up for an Angel grip.

  • Health Cross Fragment #1. After the next Angel grip, stick to the right wall and make a bit of a U-turn under the archways. You'll see the Fragment on an elevated platform.

  • Vital Star S. After a fight and some plaforrming, you'll have to Demon pull a train car and then Angel lift your way into a tunnel. Inside the tunnel, look for the Vital Star on the left side.

  • Lost Soul #2. When you get out of the tunnel, you'll have to shoot swords at a translucent train car, to materialize it. Jump on it and on the next one, then ignore the Angel grip but Angel boost to reach the rocky platforms on your right side. Climb up to find the Soul.

  • Health Cross Fragment #2. After a fight in a large rectangular room, you'll go up some stairs. Then you'll have to materialize some more train cars. Jump on the second one, then ignore the Angel grip but look for a rock that you can Demon Pull on the left side.

  • Health Cross Fragment #3. Take the Angel grip that you just ignored. It will trigger a cutscene and you will find yourself in a corridor. Turn around and backtrack to the previous area, then look for an opening on the left side.

  • Lost Soul #3. Proceed down the corridor, keeping an eye out for the Soul on the right side.

  • Lost Soul #4. After the next fight, proceed via some platforms on the left and you will enter a semi-circular hallway. There is a gap in the middle. Before jumping the gap, jump around the wall on the left side.

  • Health Cross Fragment #4. After going through a portal, you'll make your way up and around a huge metallic statue. Just before the second Angel grip, look down on the left side.

Mission Guides (Vergil's Downfall 4-6)
Mission 4 - Heartless
  • Health Cross Fragment #1 and Lost Soul #1. When you reach a large flight of stairs leading to the first portal. The Fragment is on a platform to the left, at the bottom of the stairs. The Soul is on a platform to the right, at the top of the stairs.

  • Vital Star S. After the second portal, you'll reach a Divinity Statue. Shoot and follow the translucent rocks in front of it.

  • Health Cross Fragment #2. Just past the Divinity Statue, and after a cutscene, you will be in a corridor. Before moving forward, break the wooden planks on your right.

  • Lost Soul #2. After the next fight, you'll exit via a passage through the rocks. Move a bit forward and turn around to look for an Angel grip on the left side of the path. Get there, then Angel boost to another platform a bit further, to reach the Soul.

  • Health Cross Fragment #3 and Lost Soul #3. After the third portal, look on the right side of the main path. You should see some platforms around a big rock, below a red tree. A bit further, there is an upside down portal. Follow the platforms around the rock to find the Fragment. Then look above the upside down portal to see the Soul. You can reach it from the second platform (on the way to the Fragment): Jump - Trick Up - Angel Boost.

  • Health Cross Fragment #4. After the fifth portal, cross the bridge and you'll reach a Divinity Statue. The Fragment is on a lower platform, to the right of the Statue.

Mission 5 - Own Shadow
Nothing here, have fun!

Mission 6 - Another Chance
  • Lost Soul #1. After the first fight, you'll have to cross via some platforms. Jump on the first one, then turn around and look back.

  • Health Cross Fragment #1 and Lost Soul #2. Before entering the next building, you should see the Fragment just past the entrance. The Soul is above the entrance.

  • Lost Soul #3. Inside the building, the floor will collapse. Instead of jumping straight over the gap, jump over to the left side of gap.

  • Devil Star S. You'll fight some enemies outside, then see an Angel grip to reach the next building. The Star is on a platform further and to the left of the Angel grip.

  • Lost Soul #4. When you exit the next building, you'll have to fight several waves of enemies. The Soul is on the outside wall of the building, high above the exit you came from. You must use the enemies to reach it: Demon Pull and Enemy Step, and repeat as much as necessary.

  • Health Cross Fragments #2-3. Once the fight is over, go grab Fragment #2 behind the cracked wall on the right of the exit you came from. Then proceed via an Angel grip to a floating platform. Fragment #3 is on the right side of that platform.

  • Health Cross Fragment #4. Traverse the next platforms and you'll land on a larger one for another fight. Look for a (kinda) triangular rock hanging in the air above one side of the platform you're standing on. It's not very far from the dead tree. The Fragment is atop that rock. You must once again use the enemies to reach it.

  • Health Cross Fragment #5 and Lost Soul #5. After that fight and some more platforms, you'll enter a building via two consecutive Angel grips. As soon as you get there, look to the left for the Fragment. Then proceed to the next room. and look to the right for the Soul.

Character Tips
- You found your inner devil alright. But you still have to discover your true potential.

These are not complete character guides, but rather beginner-level tips concerning some abilities that can make your life easier. Check out more in-depth tutorials online if you want to actually start playing well.

The tips below are a little bit spoiler-y in terms of gameplay (the joy in discovering that a certain ability works way better than expected, etc). So you may want skip these Character Tips at first, and start learning to know each character for yourself, experiment with their abilities, etc. And only come back here if you're having some trouble. In any case, don't use only the abilities I mention here. Style is about variety after all.

Dante
  • Demon Evade This is probably the most important ability. When performed successfully, it gives a temporary damage boost, and is also very beneficial to increase Style ranking.
  • Trinity Smash (Arbiter) A simple combo that may easily become your main damage dealer. Note that it is possible to perform the first two hits of the combo with Rebellion (faster, and doesn't knock away smaller enemies) and then switch to Arbiter for the last hit.
  • Drive / Overdrive (Rebellion) Easy to perform, and provides good damage at range. Notably, alternate with Flush and Aerial Flush (Arbiter) to deal with Butchers from a distance without taking risks.
  • Round Trip (Aquila) Extremely good for crowd control, even if you don't charge it.
  • Prop / Shredder (Osiris) and Tornado (Aquila) Decent damage against single Ice enemies.
  • Enemy Step and Demon Pull With these two abilities, you can climb higher and higher in the sky. This is necessary for few collectibles.
  • Revenant Charge Shot Good damage and stuns / knocks back enemies. Works at long range too.
  • Kablooey Not really good damage, but can be used (or abused) to increase your Style ranking: shoot all your darts at different enemies then detonate them.

Vergil
  • Swords Illusion Unlike Dante, Vergil can shoot swords while moving and performing melee attacks. This includes the Demon-pull variant, which can be spammed to keep the enemy constantly staggered. Spiral Swords are absolutely crucial, staggering and damaging enemies, and quickly raising your Style ranking. Blistering Swords are extremely good in specific situations, like taking down the shield of a Witch.
  • Rapid Slash Doesn't deal a lot of damage, but useful for moving around and escaping enemy attacks.
  • Perfect Slice A ranged attack with area of effect. Very powerful once you learn to time it properly.
  • Solar Flare If timed properly, it will launch almost every enemy type in the air. Great for crowd control and initiating airborne combat.
  • Killer Bee, Divorce, Aerial Flush All pretty decent attacks with good damage.
  • Enemy Step and Demon Pull With these two abilities, you can climb higher and higher, and keep up long aerial combos.
  • Doppelganger Very powerful, and good for Style as well, but it drains the Devil Trigger bar rather quickly (so it deprives you from more Spiral Swords). With upgrades you can switch it to Angel or Demon mode, and importantly give it the "Delay Switch" to un-sync its moves from yours, and keep the enemy constantly under attack.

SSS-rank Missions
- We do that by pissing him off.
- Roughly speaking, yes.

Total Score = Style Points x Score Rank Multipliers - Penalties

There are two Score Rank Multipliers, one for Clear Time and one for Completion. For each, an SSS rank gives you x8, an SS rank x7, and so on. So if you have SSS in both Clear Time and Completion, the final multiplier is x64. That's the ideal situation, and in that case it is generally easy to reach the required amount of Style Points. If you get SS in Clear Time, the final multiplier is x56 and you need about 14% more Style Points (which is often still possible). Two SS, or anything lower than SS, and SSS-ranking the mission starts to be rather unlikely.

The penalties are for the use of items, and for deaths. Each Item Used reduces your score by 10,000, which is completely negligible since the Total Score goes in the millions. You probably shouldn't need items at this point, but if you get in trouble do not hesitate to pop a Vital/Devil Star. Because each Death reduces your score by 10%, and that makes a lot of difference. If you use a Gold Orb, it still counts as a death.

Requirements per mission (Nephilim)
The tables below give the Total Score required for an SSS-rank, the max time to get an SSS or SS rank in Clear Time, and the minimal Style Points you need to reach the Total Score assuming a x64 multiplier (SSS in both Clear Time and Completion) or a x56 multiplier (SS and SSS ranks in Clear Time / Completion).

Those values are a bit approximative, since there doesn't seem to be any official source. They are taken from this post[www.xboxachievements.com], written by Vampire Amaya, who checked all the leaderboards.

Mission 20 might give you some trouble. It's not that hard, but it is necessary to learn the enemy's attacks so that you don't get hit too much, and figure out when you can counter-attack. It's mostly important to get the Demon Evade bonus as much as possible. Note that you can use Revenant against the white blades, and you should Devil Trigger to finish the fight, when he is at very low health and recuperating.

I don't have the data for Vergil's Downfall DLC, but it is overall pretty easy to SSS-rank those missions. Notably, the Spiral Swords rank up your Style very quickly. The only mission that might give you some trouble is the boss fight in Mission 5. Like Mission 20 in the main game, you need to learn to reliably dodge the enemy's attacks and the interlude swords.
Bloody Palace
- So how did you do it before?
- It was triggered by extreme psychosomatic trauma

There are 666 levels with enemies of increasing difficulty (equivalent to Dante Must Die starting from level 66). You cannot use any item, you cannot use Super Dante. There is no way to regenerate health, besides the small amounts given in Devil Trigger. And you have to complete it within 2 hours with your eyes closed and at least one finger in your nose.

Nah, just kidding. No palace achievements.
Conclusions
- Few contestants get this far. Congratulations. It seems devil has talent after all.

Alright, that was enjoyable and overall not too complicated. I had about 60 hours playtime on Steam when I got done with this, but this includes quite a bit of idle time, in part taking images and taking notes for this guide. So maybe about 40h or something, and probably faster if you got the skills.

I hope you liked the guide, let me know if it helped! And you know, if it did... favorite and like and award and all that, to give it more visibility.
