he does know where you are, as soon as the game registers you as his enemy. if you come close enough to the cover, he will shoot you, if you go far enough, he'll stop and do the necessary steps (reach you, retreat, whatever the npc thinks will work the best at the moment). if i just made the npc treat the last seen player position as shootable, it would shoot there indefinitely, which is kind of a problem.
