To start with
The guide is categorized into three parts. The first one is aimed at improving resolution, the second one is aimed at optimizing FPS, and finally, it covers enhancements in graphics.

Before I begin discussing the first segment, all you need to do is download the game.
Then, launch it so that all files and configs are created. That's all you need to do. Don't make any changes or edits to anything.

Important! If you've previously downloaded the game and made any edits or installed various add-ons, it's important to completely uninstall the game. Remove the game through Steam (Right-click on the game - Manage - Uninstall), and then delete the entire game folder (\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Return to Castle Wolfenstein).

Widescreen Fix
The game doesn't natively support multiple resolutions, including the 16:9 format. Many guides suggest that simply editing the configuration file will let us enjoy a new resolution. That's not true. The two screenshots belowe clearly show the difference.

To enjoy full resolution, all you need to do is download the modification pack .zip from the link below, then transfer the entire contents of the pack to the main game directory (\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Return to Castle Wolfenstein), and finally, replace the files.

The file responsible for resolution settings is wolfconfig.cfg. After launching the game and changing the resolution, the file should edit the default values to match your settings.

If you play at 1920x1080, it should look like:
seta r_mode "-1" seta r_fullscreen "1" seta r_customwidth "1920" seta r_customheight "1080" seta r_customaspect "2"

FPS fix [+Hz]
The game is originally programmed to run at 85 FPS. And it's true that FPS has a direct impact on gameplay mechanics, such as physics and scripting.

Can higher FPS lead to worse gameplay? I don't think so, even though I only played for a short time.

There are those who argue that higher FPS incorrectly affects stamina and weapon heat level, which is why it's important to observe gameplay.

In case there are any unresolvable issues with the game mechanics, I advise temporarily returning the frame rate to the default value of 85 FPS.

All you need to do is add the following commands to the game's launch options in the Steam library. Right-click on the game - Properties - Launch Options.

+set com_maxfps 144 +set r_primitives 2

You can set the value you want and test it yourself. The refresh rate of your monitor is the determining factor. Some will set it to 72/144 FPS, while others will set it to 120/240 FPS.

The command +set r_displayrefresh doesn't work correctly! It either causes the game to lag or uses a different (possibly default) refresh rate.

Once the commands have been placed and modified, they will be added to the game's configuration, which is wolfconfig.cfg from \SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Return to Castle Wolfenstein\Main. You don't need to change anything!
Improved Graphics
Graphic enhancements refer to nothing else but the Venom Mod, created by H3llBaron.
This mod pack is complete and enhances textures and shaders, including artificial intelligence, without affecting gameplay!

Downloading the mod pack requires an account on NexusMods. If you're unable to create an account or don't want to, you'll need to search the internet for the latest version of the patches, which is v6.8.

The main pack, which is 666MB in size, contains several folders and an installation guide.

Let's begin by installing graphical mods.
  • Folder Choice your autoexec - Move the autoexec.cfg file from the Max Quality folder to the Main folder in the main game directory.
  • Folder Main - Move seven files from the downloaded pack to the Main folder located in the main game directory.

Optional options:
  • AI Fix - Move the sp_vpak8.pk3 file to the Main folder located in the main game directory.
  • Nvidia Pack Shaders (separate download pack) - Move five files from the downloaded pack to the Main folder located in the main game directory, then replace the files!

If you're new to the NexusMods website, the 'Files' tab is where you'll find the download files. Click on 'Manual Download' to download a particular mod pack.

To sum up
Remember, enhancing your gaming experience with these patches can breathe new life into Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Take the time to explore and enjoy the game with its updated visuals and optimizations. Happy gaming!

P.S. The Steam store has been offering a free modification for the game for the past few years, which includes improved graphics, HUD, and dialogue. I haven't played or tested it myself, but I've included the link below. Perhaps someone will prefer this modified version of the game.

I installed ioRTCW 1.51c and it doesnt work on 16:9 resolution. The image is distorted/disproportional just how the dude here have shown it under widescreen fix images.
This patch here does work properly.

honestly a lot of this guide can easily be ignored if 1 just installs the latest version of iortcw. which does a better job imho.

Thank you very much for the guide. I was looking for a way to play this game in an updated way but without the changes brought by RealRTCW.

My adventure ended today. With all the patches provided in the guide, I didn't encounter any issues with the game except one. In certain missions, the game is not a fan of quick loading (F9). The result is that the game crashes to the desktop and needs to be restarted. It persists until the game fixes itself. There's a small workaround by loading the game from the menu, but it doesn't always work.

I'm not sure what causes it. I haven't tested each mod individually, one by one; I installed everything at once and had a good time. Perhaps it's because of the AI fix or too high an FPS? Or maybe the game is just designed that way and prone to crashing? I would bet on that.

That's all I have to say. I set my FPS limit to 144 and applied all the patches recommended in the guide. I had a wonderful time playing.
