Fixing Cod2 Startup Problem
By Wilslee
So those of you (most likely users who bought Cod2 through steam and own a Windows 7 - Windows 8.1 PC), here is a short description of what you should do in order to fix it.

Okay so this is what you have to do.
Navigate to your "C:\Program Files\Steam\" folder and find the files "Steam.dll" and "Steam2.dll", copy and paste both of those ".dll" files into this location.

"C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Call of Duty 2\"

So in the end of this process. You should have "Steam.dll" and "Steam2.dll" inside your Call of Duty 2 folder.

IMPORTANT: Only copy and paste! NOT MOVE.
PS.I.: On any concern, some users may not have both Steam.dll and Steam2.dll, for some reason I have found that each person has either one or both files. Dont worry if you dont have both. Its not manditory if you only have the first Steam.dll.

Simply put.

A. If you have Steam.dll but not Steam2.dll, not worry nothing is wrong and it should still work. Vise Versa.
B. If you have both Steam.dll and Steam2.dll, copying one of those files over will not work. You will need to copy both Steam.dll and Steam2.dll

I hope my short tutorial helps any of you in need!

So after upgrading my pc and reinstalling said favorite games I looked more closely in the detail of how to get Cod2 to run correctly. This is just my personal opinion however these are the steps I took to resolve my issues.

Running OS: Windows 10
Problems: Frozen Black Screen / Crashing

Steps I took to resolve my issues.

1. Copied Steam.dll and Steam2.dll to the main folder of Call of Duty 2.
2. Changed the Compatibility to Windows XP (SP2).
3. Set the Cod2MP_s.exe in properties to run in Administrator Mode.
4. Bypassed Steam by Creating a Cod2MP_S.exe shortcut and putting it on the desktop.

After all 4 steps I minimized steam and double clicked my shortcut on the desktop and it prompted me to run in administrator mode and Cod2MP started up immediately.

Thanks for Commenting and Reading my Post!

EDIT: 02/03/2023

If your having the issue with starting the Multiplayer game, and the screen stays black for a prolonged period of time before eventually entering the menu. Go to "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\Common\Call of Duty 2\" and right click "Cod2_mp.exe" and click "Create Desktop Shortcut".

Running the game from the shortcut should resolve this issue.

Thanks for reading!

Cod2 Crash Origin Unknown
My Basis

So with my understanding, no one know's why for some people or maybe even all, one of the best games of all time simply crash's on start up. Yet it may not be my concern or wish to know why. Personally, I believe most people that have this problem don't care why it does. They just want it fixed. And here I am, I created this guide to allow fellow Call of Duty 2 lovers to enjoy the game they payed for. Frag on my comrades. Frag on!

I had the same problem and the thing that caused the crash on startup was my rivatuner statistics server. I closed it and after that immediatelly could start a game without any errors and crashes

Speaking of personal experience as someone who's actually having a normal CoD 2 installation regardless of digital or CD copy, if you have MSI Afterburner opened at startup (for reasons I might not have known), close it first before playing this game. Believe me, somehow of all games CoD 2 wouldn't start if Afterburner was on. And it's even after trying all of those steps this guide has provided.

May have a missing file than, especially if none of the fixes known havent resolved your issue. It may be a comparability issue. You can try to specify it there BikkieKop, but Tank Guy if your getting an issue with missing "default_localize.cf" than i suggest you go into the options for Cod2 on Steam and verify the integrity of your files for the game.

I'm also getting a crash on startup for SP and MP. However this only started when I did a fresh install of Windows 11 on my PC last week. I bought COD2 in the summer sale and ran it for a bit to see if it works and change graphic and audio settings to play it later. I reinstalled it when my PC is back up and tried to test it but it keeps crashing to Desktop with no error message. Funny thing being, before I had Windows 11 upgrading from 10 and now on the same hardware but fresh install of 11 - it will not run. But I have a i7 8th gen Lenovo laptop that is fresh installed 11 - and COD2 runs fine on it. I can even stream from the laptop to my PC. I've tried the fixes and compatibly adjustments but no luck.

No idea if relevant, but when I attempt to test compatibility in a troubleshooter, I get an error that it's missing "default_localize.cfa."
