First of all, greetings everyone! I hope you are having a great day. I decided to make a guide on how to read Higurashi in it's entirety, omitting only chapters focused on the meme or funny side of things like Batsukoishi or Daybreak. This guide focus off course in visual novel content as I only mention anime or manga when there is no VN source (mostly for sequel arcs). With web links to facilitate the process and just follow the steps.

Higurashi might confuse a lot of people or overwhelm 'em because it has too much content and reading through of all of it may take a lot of time. But believe me, it's all worth it. If you are interested in Higurashi but don't know if you would like it, or think you don't have the patience to read through all of it, just download freely from here Ch 1 (Onikakushi). Read it and if you like it you will surely will be hooked already. If not, no issues, it's not for you, I respect that.

So, basically before starting, I personally recommend you to not overcomplicate things for yourself. If you feel like you're getting a headache or want to keep it simple, you can read first through all steam chapters and finish it there, as it covers almost all of what the original author did.

However, Higurashi was greatly expanded when it was released on consoles, by others authors like Kiichi Kanou with Ryukishi approval, which ended in the birth of many new arcs, and that's why this guide exists; to provide you a way to read through all the relevant content in the best way possible.

Also, if you don't want get through the hassle of installing the voices and newer sprites that's fine too, as I read through all main chapters without it, and it was a great experience; especially because without voices you can feel the terror and tension much more. I consider the ost from the MangaGamer version to be a best fit, and so the MG sprites with scarier faces (though you can select MangaGamer ost selection from the mod itself and also MangaGamer sprites).

Now, I will list two/three ways of reading all of Higurashi (a recommended/easier order for most people and a chronological order without spoilers which may suit to a lot of people too); pick whichever you want. It's important to consider that Higurashi was a episodic visual novel so you are going here to purchase chapter by chapter or you just can buy the pack with all of it. It's not expensive for all the sheer amount of content.

1. Read from the very beginning, chapter 1. Download it free here on steam:

2. Purchase and read the rest of the chapters in order (1,2,3...):

3. Once finished those, start reading Higurashi Rei and ingame select "Saikoroshii" chapter, read only that for the not meme content (included in above pack - step 2).
   
   
4. Optional: You can read through Hou+ but those are non canon spin offs and meme chapters (included in above pack - step 2). They are pretty fun and worth your time but not necessary, (Just don't read the after-cast party as it spoils heavily the anime sequel, Gou/Sotsu).
   
   
   Main story finished here (You can continue with the rest if you want or leave it here).

5. After that, we are going to mod chapter 4, we have to, because at this point of the guide it's necessary for reading all of Higurashi relevant content that's left. So, what we are going to do is go here and download Mod.Installer.Windows.exe: https://github.com/07th-mod/python-patcher/releases
   
   We execute the .exe and everything will be easy from there. We are going to follow up the steps in it and when selecting the game we want to mod, we are going to select the option that says "Console arcs (overwrite ch4 Himatsubushi)".
   
   What the mod does is to overwrite files from ch 4 and replace them adding the "Console arcs", referred as that because the arcs come from the ps3 version of Higurashi Sui. This is extra content that takes place mostly between chapters of the main history introducing a whole new cast of characters along old ones.
   
   
6. Once we have the consoles arcs installed, start modded ch4 and start reading them from the main menu in this order (from top to bottom and left to right in the menu): Taraimawashi, Tsukiotoshi, Someutsushi, Kageboushi, Yoigoshi, Police case files, Tokihogushi, Connecting fragments, Miotsukushi omote, Miotsukushi Ura and Kotohogushi.
   
   On the mod you also have: Hajisarashi and Epilogue chapter, but those are more like fun extras (meme) than something else.
   
   And with that you have read through all of the visual novel content and the whole main plot in it's entirety. What follows up next are sequels and a sort of prequel that is better to read after the main plot. And we will cover all of that, so...

7. Anime time! Watch Higurashi Gou and its second season, Sotsu: https://www.crunchyroll.com/es/series/G4PH0WXEM/higurashi-when-they-cry---gou
   
   
8. Now manga, we are reading: Higurashi reiwa. Divided in three arcs; the arc orders are: Oniokoshi, Hoshiwatashi and Irotoutoshi. This an alternative sequel to the main plot like Gou.
   
   
9. Next in line would be Higurashi Oni, also a manga. It's a prequel that should be read at this point.
   
   
10. And finally, as an optional step, there is a manga also called Higurashi Gou like the anime but its sequel is called Meguri and not Sotsu. Both Gou and Meguri manga are different takes from the anime and even some people prefer the manga version of this sequel arc. Bear in mind that in this case, the manga was after the anime and the anime story outline was from the original author himself: Ryukishi.

If you think that's too much to read and ask: "Is that all worth reading?" then you can cut some corners. You need to follow these steps instead, based on the previous ones.

1. Follow up to step 5 of the previous section.
   
   
2. In step 6 of the previous section skip the following arcs: (Taraimawashi, Tsukiotoshi, Police case files, Hajisarashi).
   
   
3. Watch the Higurashi Gou and Sotsu animes.

Now, we have the other way you can take to read all of Higurashi. This order is mostly the one you would normally read if you were japanese and were playing Higurashi on ps3 or Switch. It's for me, a really good way to read Higurashi and enjoy the console/extra arcs to the fullest, as some of them may lose "reading value" (e.g. Taraimawashi, Tsukiotoshi), if you use the "Recommended/easier" order. Because those were intended to be read in a specific point or window of your playthrough, in between the main ones.

Though, it's important to note, that the console/extra arcs act more like a nice complement than a pivot to the overall plot. And most of them are focused on their own events and characters instead of intertwining themselves a lot into the 8 main chapters. So, in a way you may feel a disconnection of sorts that can affect the pace of the main history a bit. If you don't mind this, then you are going to enjoy each arc to the maximum; console arcs are pretty good. Buf if you are worried, feel free to stick to the main chapters when you feel like it, and read the console arcs later.

By the way, in this case for PC, we have to do some bouncing around between chapters installed in our PCs. It's not a big deal tbh, and for some people this is the reading order they were looking for. Please, bear in mind, that you won't get yourself spoiled of upcoming arcs you haven't read with this order, rest assured.

Before starting, here I recommend you to read all of Higurashi with the sprites and voice mod to have consistency between the console arcs and main arcs, using the same artstyle and assets.

So, let's begin:

1. Read steam chapters 1 through 4: Onikakushi, Watanagashi, Tatarigoroshi, Himatsubushi. Remember, ch1 (Onikakushi) is free here, and then purchase the pack including the rest of the chapters:

2. Now install the mod https://github.com/07th-mod/python-patcher/releases (remember to download 07th-Mod.Installer.Windows.exe) and overwrite your ch4 files replacing them with the 'console arcs'. Just follow the installer steps; this is pretty easy to do.
   
   
3. Start up your ch4 again now modified with the console arcs. And start reading Taraimawashi.
   
   
4. Read now on the modded ch4: Someutsushi.
   
   
5. Read steam chapter 5: Meakashi.
   
   
6. Read on modded ch4: Tsukiotoshi.
   
   
7. Read on modded ch4: Kageboushi.
   
   
8. Read steam chapter 6: Tsumihoroboshi.
   
   
9. Read on modded ch4: Yoigoshi.
   
   
10. Read on modded ch4: "Police case files".
    
    
11. Read steam chapter 7: Minagoroshi.
    
    
12. Read on modded ch4: Tokihogushi.
    
    
13. Read steam chapter 8: Matsuribayashi. Final chapter of the main history which is followed by Saikoroshii later.

    After reading chaper 8 (Matsuribayashi) there are two alternative ending arcs that are also canon. Basically, Ura and Omote offer a different take of the events that could possibly happen after chapter 7 (Minagoroshi), so:
    
    
15. Read on modded ch4: Miotsukushi Ura (Final chapter concluding the main 'console arcs' plot. It's not related to steam chapter 8 as it ties with Omote chapter instead).
    
    
16. Read on modded ch4: Miotsukushi Omote. This is an alternate ending chapter to the main history which can be also considered canon, it's such a good chapter and many like it. It's also the brother arc of Miotsukushi Ura; the two happen concurrently.
    
    
17. Optional step: You can also read the ps2 version of Omote included in the mod, which a lot of people like too. But be warned, the ps2 version doesn't take into account what happened in Tokihogoshi and Miotsukushi Ura which I think is very sad. So, you could read first the standard/ps3 version and then read the ps2 one with ultra skip (ctrl) to stop on the unread parts.

23. Read the Higurashi Reiwa manga. An alternative sequel of the main plot like Gou&Sotsu/Meguri. It's divided in three arcs. The arcs order being: Oniokoshi, Hoshiwatashi and Irotoutoshi.
    
    
24. Read the manga, Higurashi Oni (This is a prequel but I am leaving this here as I consider the best moment to read it).

We reached the end! To be honest it wasn't that traumatic, or was it? I think you can easily read all of Higurashi but it will take time of course. Just remember that you don't need to Read all chapters one after the another without pause. You can take breaks between chapters and resume later. Take it at your own pace; just don't try to drop a chapter in the middle of it.

Also, I know this could be way easier if we just had the Switch version in english here (that one has everything regarding vn arcs) but keep in mind that the translation for this visual novel on steam was released quite some time ago, before we even had some console arcs. Moreover, translating the Switch version would be almost impossible as the PC script has some differences with the consoles one. Switch/consoles have also some censorship on top of it (which 7th mod helps to remove). Basically, you can't drop the pc script and expect it to work on the console version. The console arcs would need an official translation too, not the fan one, although that one is perfect in my opinion.

Again, if you are like "Omg, that's too much to read", you can just read ch1 to 8, continue with Rei(saikoroshi) and end it there. Don't overcomplicate it, if you feel this is too much of a bother. But maybe you will end like me, wanting to know all of Higurashi, and let me tell you, the console arcs for example were quite the ride, I loved those; this journey is all worth it.

Please bear in mind that my guide might be far from perfect, or that people could have different opinions about if it's definitive or not, but as for myself I'm very proud of it! and I really think it includes all you need to know.

Primero que nada, ¡un saludo a todos! Espero esten teniendo un gran día. He decidido en hacer una guia en como leer Higurashi en su totalidad, omitiendo solo los capitulos centrados en lo meme o gracioso como Batsukoishi o Daybreak. Esta guía se centra por supuesto en la visual novel solo mencionando anime o manga cuando no hay una fuente original en formato VN (Mas que nada para los arcos secuela). Proveyendo de fuentes para facilitar el proceso y solo seguir los pasos.

Ten en cuenta por favor que los capitulos estan en ingles y no todos estan traducidos al español por fans. La guía tiene como objetivo hacer mas facil la navegación por los arcos de Higurashi, no implicar que el contenido de la VN este en español.

Higurashi puede confundir a un monton de gente y abrumarlos, mas que nada porque hay mucho contenido y leerlo todo lleva un tiempo considerable. Pero creanme que vale todo la pena; si estas interesado en Higurashi pero no sabes si te gustara, o no crees que tengas la paciencia para leerlo todo, simplemente descarga de aca en steam el cap 1 (Onikakushi), leelo y si te gusta entonces seguramente ya estes enganchado. Si no, pues no es para ti la historia y eso es respetable.

Asi que, basicamente antes de comenzar, personalmente recomiendo que no te compliques. Si sientes que te esta dando un dolor de cabeza puedes leer primero todos los capitulos de steam y dejarlo ahi, eso es al final lo "principal", hecho por el autor original.

Sin embargo, si gustas de mas tienes que saber que Higurashi fue luego expandido de gran manera en su release a consolas, por otros autores como Kiishi Kanou con la autorizacion y aprobación del autor original, Ryukishi. Y es por eso que esta guia existe; para guiarte en el proceso de como y en que orden leer todo el contenido relevante de la mejor forma posible.

También si no quieres tomarte la molestia de instalar las voces y sprites mas nuevos tambien esta bien. Personalmente lei todos los capitulos principales sin modearlos y fue una experiencia muy grata, especialmente sin las voces porque puedes sentir el terror o tensión mucho mas. Así como considero que la ost de la version de MangaGamer (la default de steam) en ser la mejor elección para los momentos presentados de la VN, e igualmente los sprites de MG me gustan mas personalmente (Aunque como tal puedes seleccionar la ost de steam desde el mod mismo y tambien los sprites).

Ahora, listare dos/tres formas de leer todo Higurashi (una recomendada/facil para la mayoria, y una en orden cronologico sin spoilers que puede ser mas comoda para muchas personas también); elige cualquiera que te guste. Es importante considerar que Higurashi fue una novela episodica por lo que vamos a comprar capitulo por capitulo en steam o simplemente comprar el pack con todo. No es nada caro teniendo en cuenta todo el contenido que obtenemos a cambio.

1. Leer desde el principio por supuesto el cap 1 que es gratis:

2. Comprar y leer el resto de los capitulos en orden (1,2,3...):

3. Una vez terminados los caps numerados, empezar a leer Higurashi Rei y dentro del juego seleccionar "Saikoroshii", leer solo ese. El resto de arcos incluidos en Rei son contenido meme (Incluido en el pack de arriba - paso 2).
   
   
4. Opcional: Puedes leer el cap que se llama Hou+ pero ese contiene arcos no canon, spin-offs y capitulos meme (incluido en el pack de arriba - paso 2). Son bastante divertidos y valen tu tiempo pero no son necesarios, (Solo no leas la after-cast party de ahí; te spoilea todo Higurashi Gou/Sotsu que seria el anime secuela de la VN).
   
   
   La historia principal finaliza aquí (Puedes continuar si lo deseas o dejarlo aca).

5. Luego vamos a modear el capitulo 4, tenemos que hacerlo en este punto porque es necesario para leer todo el contenido relevante de Higurashi que falta. Asi que, lo que vamos a hacer es ir aca: https://github.com/07th-mod/python-patcher/releases y descargar el archivo Mod.Installer.Windows.exe.
   
   Ejecutaremos el .exe y con el instalador ya todo el proceso es muy sencillo. Vamos a seguir los pasos del installer y cuando tengamos que selecionar el juego que queremos modear, vamos a seleccionar la opcion que dice "Arcos de consola (sobreescribir cap4: Himatsubushi)".
   
   Lo que el mod hace es sobreescribir los archivos del cap 4 y reemplazarlos por los de los "arcos de consola" nombrados asi porque son los arcos que vienen de la versión de ps3, Higurashi Sui. Esto es contenido extra que toma lugar principalmente entre los capitulos de la historia principal introduciendo un nuevo elenco de personajes junto a los viejos.
   
   
6. Una vez que tengamos los arcos de consola instalados, vamos a comenzar leyendelos desde el menu principal en este orden (de arriba a abajo y izquierda a derecha en el menu): Taraimawashi, Tsukiotoshi, Someutsushi, Kageboushi, Yoigoshi, Police case files, Tokihogushi, Connecting fragments, Miotsukushi omote, Miotsukushi Ura y Kotohogushi.
   
   Si ves en el menu del mod los arcos: 'Hajisarash'i y 'Epilogue', esos son extras opcionales que van mas por el lado meme/gracioso.
   
   Y con eso ya hemos leido todo el contenido disponible en formato visual novel y lo que es la historia principal en su totalidad. Lo que sigue ahora son sequelas y una prequela que es mejor luego de haber leido la historia principal. Y justo vamos a cubrir todo eso, asi que...

7. Vamos a ver el anime Higurashi Gou y Sotsu (2 temporadas): https://www.crunchyroll.com/es/series/G4PH0WXEM/higurashi-when-they-cry---gou
   
   
8. Ahora manga, esta vez leeremos: Higurashi Reiwa. Este esta dividido en tres arcos, los cuales son: (Oniokoshi, Hoshiwatashi y Irotoutoshi).
   
   
9. Luego seguiria Higurashi Oni, también un manga. Es una prequela, de hecho, que debería leerse en este punto.
   
   
10. Y finalmente, como paso opcional, hay un manga llamado Higurashi Gou, como el anime pero su secuela se llama Meguri, no Sotsu. Ambos Gou y Meguri manga son una perspectiva diferente en comparación al anime del mismo nombre, e incluso algunas personas prefieren la versión del manga de estos arcos sequela. Pero ten en cuenta en este caso, que el manga de Gou fue luego del anime y de hecho el anime fue escrito (lo que es el guion/borrador inicial) por el autor original, Ryukishi.

Si crees que todo esto es mucho para leer y te preguntas: "¿Es enserio todo escencial de leer?" entonces puedes omitir algunas cosas. Necesitaras entonces seguir estos pasos, basados en los anteriores.

1. Seguir hasta el paso 5 de la sección anterior.
   
   
2. En el paso 6 de la sección anterior saltarse/omitir los siguientes arcos (Taraimawashi, Tsukiotoshi, Police case files, Hajisarashi).
   
   
3. Ver el anime de Higurashi Gou y Sotsu.

Y ahora tenemos la otra manera que podemos tomar para leer todo Higurashi. Este orden es mas que nada el que leerias si fueras japones y estuvieses jugando Higurashi en ps3 o Switch. Es para mi, una forma excelente de leer Higurashi y disfrutar los arcos de consola al máximo, teniendo en cuenta estos pueden perder "valor" (ej. Taraimawashi, Tsukiotoshi), si usamos el orden sencillo/recomendado. Debido a que se espera que los leas en un punto especifico o momento de tu playthrough, en medio de los principales.

Aunque, es importante mencionar que los arcos de consola actuan mas como un buen complemento que como un eje central de la trama principal. Y la mayoría estan más enfocados en sus propios eventos y personajes en lugar de mezclarse demasiado con los capitulos principales. Así que, en cierta forma, puede que sientas un cierto tipo de desconexión que puede afectar el ritmo de la historia principal un poco. Si esto no te preocupa, entonces vas a disfrutar cada arco al máximo; los de consola son también geniales e interesantes. Pero si no estas seguro de esto, siempre puedes enfocarte primero en los capitulos principales (los númerados) cuando quieras y leer los arcos de consola luego.

Ahora bien, considerar que en pc tenemos que saltar entre capitulos instalados en nuestra PC. Realmente no es un gran problema y para muchos este el orden que estaban buscando. Por favor toma en cuenta que no te vas a spoilear de arcos que no hayas leido si sigues este orden. ¡Tu tranquilo!

Antes de empezar, recomiendo que en este caso leas Higurashi con el mod, con los nuevos sprites y voces para tener consistencia entre el artstyle y presentación entre arcos principales y arcos de consola.

Recuerda instalar los capitulos de steam que vayas a leer y luego ejecutar el instalador seleccionando el juego o juegos que vayas a modear:

Por lo que, iniciemos:

1. Lee los capitulos de steam del 1 al 4: Onikakushi, Watanagashi, Tatarigoroshi, Himatsubushi. Recuerda, el capitulo 1 es gratis aca en steam y luego comprarias el pack que incluye el resto de capitulos:

Instalaremos ahora el mod: https://github.com/07th-mod/python-patcher/releases - Recuerda bajar el archivo '07th-Mod.Installer.Windows.exe' y sobreescribir los archivos de tu capitulo 4 reemplazandolos con los arcos de consola. Simplemente sigue los pasos del instalador; es bastante facil de hacer.
   
   
3. Inicia tu capitulo 4 ahora modificado con lo arcos de consola. Y empieza a leer: Taraimawashi.
   
   
4. Lee ahora en cap 4 modeado: Someutsushi.
   
   
5. Lee el cap 5 de steam: Meakashi.
   
   
6. Leer en cap 4 modeado: Tsukiotoshi.
   
   
7. Leer en cap 4 modeado: Kageboushi.
   
   
8. Leer el cap 6 de steam: Tsumihoroboshi.
   
   
9. Leer en cap 4 modeado: Yoigoshi.
   
   
10. Leer en cap 4 modeado: Police case files.
    
    
11. Leer el cap 7 de steam: Minagoroshi.
    
    
12. Leer en cap 4 modeado: Tokihogushi.
    
    
13. Leer el cap 8 de steam: Matsuribayashi. Capitulo final de la historia principal que es seguido luego por Saikoroshii.

    Luego del capitulo 8 de steam (Matsuribayashi) hay dos arcos alternativos que son canon. Ura y Omote reemplazan los hechos que ocurrieron en el capitulo 8, ofreciendo una perspectiva diferente de lo que también podría haber pasado luego del capitulo 7 (Minagoroshi), así que:
    
    
15. Leer en cap 4 modeado: Miotusukushi Ura (Capitulo final que concluye la historia principal de los arcos de consola. Este capitulo no esta relacionado con el cap 8 de steam, sino con Omote, el del siguiente paso).
    
    
16. Leer en cap 4 modeado: Miotsukushi Omote. Este es un capitulo final alternativo de la historia principal que es considerado canon. Es un gran capitulo y a muchos les gusta. Es también el arco hermano de Miotsukushi Ura, los dos suceden al tiempo.
    
    
17. Paso opcional: Puedes también leer la versión de ps2 de Omote incluida en el mod, la cual le gusta a muchas personas también, pero se avisado, la versión de ps2 no tiene en cuenta los sucedos de Tokihogushi y Miotsukushi Ura a lo que creo es muy triste. Asi que puedes leer primero la versión standar/ps3 y luego leer la de ps2 usando el ultra skip (ctrl) para que la novela se detenga en las partes no leidas.

¡Hemos llegado al final! y para ser honesto no fue muy traumatico, ¿o si lo fue? creo que puedes leer Higurashi facilmente aunque tome su tiempo claro. Solo recuerda que no necesitas estar tipo: Leer los capitulos uno despues del otro sin descanso sin pausa. Puedes tomarte un descanso entre capitulos y luego retomar luego. Tomalo a tu ritmo, simplemente trata de no dejar a medias un capitulo a mitad de lectura del mismo.

También, se que esto podria ser mas facil si pudiesemos tener la versión de switch en ingles aca (esta tiene todo en cuando a los arcos de la visual novel) pero ten en cuenta que la traducción para la novela en steam fue lanzada hace ya un buen rato, ante que incluso alguno arcos de consola existiesen. Y traducir la versión de switch seria practicamente imposible teniendo en cuenta el script/guion traducido en PC tiene diferencia con el de consolas, e incluso censura aplicada en consolas (la cual 7th mod ayudo a remover). Basicamente no puedes dejar caer el guion de pc y esperar que funcione en la versión de consola. Los arcos de consola necesitarian una traducción oficial también, no la fan aunque esa igual es perfecta en mi opinión.

Nuevamente, si estas tipo "Dios mio, es demasiado por leer", puedes simplemente leer del cap 1 al 8 en steam y finalmente Rei (Saikoroshii) y dejarlo hasta ahí. No te compliques las cosas si sientes es demasiada molestia. Pero quiza termines como yo, queriendo conocer todo lo que ofrece Higurashi, y dejame decirte que vale la pena, los arcos de consola por ejemplo fueron espectaculares, ame esos, esta aventura lo vale.

Por favor toma en cuenta que mi guia puede distar de ser perfecta, o las personas pueden tener diferentes opiniones acerca de si es definitiva o no, pero en lo que me concierne ¡estoy muy orgulloso de ella! y realmente pienso incluye todo lo que necesitas saber.
