First step
Most often, after installation, the game will only work up to the initial screen with the «play» button, and then freeze completely, so that only a full reboot will help.

To make the game work, you need to:

1) Go to desktop mode.
2) Go to Steam.
3) In the library, click on Darktide and properties
4) Go to the Compatibility section.
5) Select Proton Experimental.

Done c:

Don't worry if the game freeze a little while selecting an operator, this is normal
Controls
You can also find a control called «Best Controls». These control settings are made by me and they are an optimal solution than the default ones, which do not have most of the active buttons for the game.

You can find them like this:

1) Click the Steam button on the console
2) Click the controller settings on the right.
3) Click the layout icon (where any default name can be)
4) Click the community layouts section
5) Select Best controls

Done!

Settings
On these settings everything works fine even on the difficulty of heresy, when there are hordes
In the graphics just select low and set it up as in the screenshots
Done! Now you can play the game with stable FPS

Save yourself the trouble, the game barely gets 10 frames per second in combat.

The difference isn't huge, so setting both to 60 FPS is usually the better choice

Awesome guide. I was wondering, would setting at 40fps with vsync on. and setting the steam frame limiter to 40 fps give a smoother experience? Or does it not really matter and just set both at 60fps?

It should show up in the community control schemes, there are only about 6 of them. But just in case, I updated it so it can show up there again :reimu5:

Overall, after all these changes, the game is stable - I haven’t had a single crash in two missions.

I have a theory that stability might depend on the Steam Deck version. For example, I’m using the OLED model and everything works fine, but older models might have overheating issues that could cause crashes or freezes. If you’re also on the OLED version and still experiencing problems, then the cause might be something else :fuhrer_thinkingface:

For example, maybe there shouldn't be any custom changes to the processor speed or other settings, so there are no freezes. For this game, I don't have any such options enabled when I press the button with the three dots. However, I do have the maximum frame rate set to 60 (60 Hz) there :CatPeep:

After completely reinstalling the game and deleting all related files, it now launches and runs smoothly regardless of the compatibility settings or language selected. The only noticeable difference is in the initial loading screen and the position of the «Play» button: with Proton compatibility enabled, the first loading screen looks better, while without it, the window is different and the «Play» button appears in a different spot :arue:

Using the settings from the guide, freezes is almost gone and the game runs smoothly. However, if you just set everything to low without following the guide, freezes happen more often, especially when elite enemies like flamethrowers and grenadiers appear, as they seem to put more load on the visuals.

Am I missing something? It crashes me in the middle of the game, I have everything in low, what did I do wrong?
