Amazon campaign guide
By Amulet of Kings
In this guide I would like to give some tips and suggestions for playing an Amazon roleplaying campaign. This playthrough requires the Daughters of Ares mod.

The Amazons are a mythological tribe of warrior women who lived in northern Anatolia, in the vicinity of the Thermodon river. They are best known for appearing in Heracles' ninth labour, the Amazonomachy and the Trojan War. The aim of this guide is to follow a playstyle consistent with Penthesilea's adventures during the Trojan War. Therefore, the main focus of the campaign will be to expand eastwards, allying with Troy against the Achaean factions.

Campaign setup
This guide assumes that besides using the Daughters of Ares and Expanded Family Trees mods, you are using the Expanded Pantheons mod, which adds 28 new deities to the game, raising the total number to 62. The mod changes Ares' (Penthesilea's mythological father) cult center to Themisthyra. In addition, it adds many Greek deities relevant in the Trojan War. All mods have been developed to be fully compatible with each other!
Campaign focus
Deities
  • Ares: This is your starting god; he is the father of Penthesilea, so you should be building his temples in your capitals.
  • Apollo: Apollo is one of the gods who sided with the Trojans in the war. Moreover, public order is really hard to balance in TW Pharaoh. The easiest way to deal with it is to build shrines that give public order bonuses, such as Apollo's. During the early game, you will not have access to this god, so temporally worship Arinna instead.
  • Artemis: Artemis, Apollo's twin, also sided with the Trojans. Being a huntress goddess, she is a suitable match for Amazons. Notice that this deity is only available with the Expanded Pantheons mod.

Royal Tradition
Despite starting next to Hittite lands, we will focus the campaign on the Aegean in order to be faithful to Greek mythology. Wait until you expand east to select the Aegean Royal Tradition.

Ancient Legacy
I think that Perseus' ancient legacy is more fitting than Atreus'. First, it allows you to make peace with your "canonical" allies like Troy, Lycia and Thrace, should they declare war on you. Second, it unlocks the global recruitment mechanic. Amazon units can only be recruited in the appropriate military buildings, which can only be built in province capitals. The global recruitment allows you to recruit Amazons anywhere on the map without needing to rely on the inferior race of men.

Court and family tree
Your task during the campaign will be to defend Troy from the Achaean hosts. Do not declare war against Troy, nor join a civil war against them. Instead, raise their diplomatic attitude by signing deals with them and joining their wars. You can intermarry your characters, but notice that the mod treats Amazon generals as male, so you will have to marry them to Priam's daughters. If you play your cards correctly, you will get adopted into the royal family tree and be named Priam's heir, eventually becoming Anax.

Allies and antagonists
We will follow the Iliad and the Posthomerica and try to become allies with the following factions: Troy, Lycia, Thrace and Aethiopia (you will probably not meet this faction during your campaign). Your enemies will obviously be the Achaean factions: Mycenae, Ithaca, Phtia and Thebes. You may also add Athina, Pylos and Cnossos to the list. I suggest considering Achilles and Athina as your main nemeses. Achilles and Penthesilea's clash is one of the most epic duels in the Trojan War. Regarding Athina, you may get revenge on the city for losing against them during the Amazonomachy.
Campaign guide
Part 1: Consolidating in Anatolia
Amazons begin in the Thermodon province far away from the Aegean. The first task will be to consolidate your power and ally with your neighbouring factions so that you may safely migrate easward. Research the Longer festivals royal decree to obtain a +3 happiness bonus, and then research the Preparation against reprisal decree, which will unlock a new god slot. After destroying Quiha, declare war on Sapinuwa to your south and conquer all their settlements. Send a small force to colonize Amaseia, so that you gain control of the Zippalanda province.

Once Preparation against reprisal is researched, worship Arinna and build her shrines in your settlements to balance public order. At this point, you should consider befriending all the southern and eastern factions; ideally, your armies will not be coming back to this part of the map. You can trade Arinna settlement (which is the only settlement not belonging to a fully owned province) with Hatti for a military alliance.

Next, I recommend to start expanding east. You can declare war on factions with which you have not signed treaties. You can use the Black Sea as a highway to avoid trespassing into neutral factions. Start your slow expansion into the Aegean, and try to befriend as many factions as you can. Once you reach Trojan territory, it is time to plan your invasion of Greece.

Part 2: Joining the Trojan War
At this point, you will have to cross the Aegean to land on Achaean territory. Silently sail towards the northern part of Greece where Achilles' faction is located and perform a blitzkrieg attack to destroy it. Once you conquer a sacred Aegean land, you can join the Aegean royal tradition. Also, change Arinna's worship for Apollo's for enhanced public order.

Conquer the northern part of Greece to control the corner of the map and then head south, individually declaring war on the Achaean factions. Always offer to join your allies' wars in order to increase your diplomatic standing and bypass possible military alliances of your enemies. If the campaign went as planned, you should have destroyed all Achaean factions, saving Troy from destruction. If you get adopted into the Aegean royal family and become Priam's heir, you can become Anax upon Priam's death.

Part 3: Obtaining campaign victory
Since this is a roleplaying campaign, you may stop here and consider your campaign complete. However, if you want to officially achieve a campaign victory, you will need to farm 70 victory points for a minor victory. The easiest victory points are usually the ones linked to capturing "homeland" regions. The Amazon homeland regions are the starting province (Thermodon), as well as the Aegean regions. In addition, you can achieve campaign victory by playing tall. The Expanded Pantheons mod adds many cult centers in the Aegean region. Each Grand Temple grants +2 victory points, which combined with your conquest and Anax-related victory points, should give you enough points to achieve a minor victory. Congratulations, you have beaten the game as CA never conceived would be possible!
