Location & access
The castle is located in the western side of the Fractured Plains near the entrance to the Stormtouched Highlands.

The castle is nestled on an elevated area overlooking the surrounding area. All four walls are intact and there is no door.

Rig up some beams to create a path over the wall.

Down the bottom are several rock formations which hide a chest.

Once it's clear of rocks it's time to get building. Create a temporary location nearby to fast travel to. Beside the waterfall overlooking the castle is safe. You'll need a lot of wood, so I recommend teleporting back to the starting area as there are no enemies nearby.

Castle levels
Use beams to construct a frame on the inside of the castle walls. Add some floors and stairs. Add some lights, relocate your teleporter to the top level and you're all set. Raids won't be able to get you!!

This is how I'll used the space:

Top level

Here I'll add the machines that cannot be covered.

Entrance level

This level is where I'll add my bed and storage.

Lower level

Plenty of space for machines that need to be covered.

Ground level

Rocks and onions (and the chest).

I recommend adding a wall on the North and West facing axis to prevent any mobs clipping through.

Stop clipping enemies
Try extending your walls if you're worried about enemies clipping through the castle walls.

Cocoon your castle in timber beams, and add a skin to it. If you can push the enemies back, they shouldn't spawn right on your wall.

Block the Castle's approaches
There are two approaches to the castle that enemies can take - across the bridge and up a nearby track. Block both of these to stop any patrolling mobs, hunting or raiding parties.

Block the bridge

Block the track

Nothing can get in from below. Enemies will constantly run around unable to find a weak spot to penetrate. They won't try and destroy your walls either, as it's too far from your base.
Surrounding Areas
The surrounding area has several resources:
  • Rock, tin and copper
  • *lots* of dwellberries (gives 20 food), running water (add those together in a Cooking Pot and make dwellberry infusion which is very good hydration).
  • Sheep-type mobs for fleece
  • Trees (I teleport to the starter area when I need timber)

huh, weird, I found this and made it my base, enclosed it by literally walling it off like a literal castle, raids just sit outside quietly and stand there for my to shoot them, the dragon doesn't do much, and being hunted doesn't do anything, I literally think that if you just enclose a base in 4 high walls mobs just break and don't attack you anyways

biggest regret is breaking the two crumbling walls :')

Yeah it is. You need to block the two approaches to the castle. You can also extend your walls to if you're worried about enemies clipping through the walls. Finally, if you stay on the lower ground level when the dragon attacks the green goo can't hit you. By doing these things your base is literally raid proof.

Good find but definitely not raid proof

Not too un-raidable, since you just get raided by harder mobs lol

On the ground floor I put tier 1 walls all around and mobs simply destroy the walls and clip through anyways, this game needs to give us the ability to put stronger stone walls or somesuch that mobs can break...

Just built a little bit here. I was on the bottom under my floor and the dragon spit didn't reach the bottom. Just went through the top. As he suggested, I am going to try adding walls, I had an enemy clip through the walls twice now, but he breaks anything underneath so idk if the walls would really help as they'd probably just break those too. For the most part (other than the enemy clipping through) it's not a bad idea.

What about dragons?

Interesting, I tried using a few of the prebuilt castles already and the won’t let me build. Shows red and says blocked. Will try here. Thanks for this.
