Welcome, Vault Dweller.
So, you want to play Fallout 1 — the real beginning, back when the series was still a roleplaying game with teeth. Good news: it holds up. Bad news: the 1997 release doesn’t.

This guide isn’t a walkthrough, it’s an orientation. I’ll help you get set up and prepared to walk the wastes as the devs intended... maybe even better.

If you own Fallout 1 on Steam, great, that’s your base. But don’t launch it just yet. The game in its vanilla state is buggy, unbalanced, and missing a ton of content that was originally planned but cut.

That's where Fallout Fixt comes in.

What is Fallout Fixt?
Fallout Fixt is a comprehensive restoration and enhancement mod created by Sduibek. It does three big things:

– Restores cut content (quests, dialogue, encounters, items)
– Fixes hundreds of bugs the original release never patched
– Modernizes the game with quality-of-life improvements like resolution support and improved UI behavior

There are multiple install options, ranging from Purist (bug fixes only) to Full (restoration + balance tweaks). If it’s your first time, you might want to go with Purist so you can enjoy the restored content on later playthroughs.

Quickstart Tips (Without Spoilers)
– Tag Small Guns unless you're doing a gimmick build, they dominate the early game
– Don’t dump Intelligence, it locks you out of quests and dialogue
– Save often, and in multiple slots, especially before risky choices or new areas
– You don’t need Charisma, this isn’t New Vegas
– Don’t be intimidated by the isometric view, you’ll adjust quickly

This is all you need for your first playthrough, literally. Later on, you can dig into a detailed walkthrough to complete all the side quests you might have missed. For that, I recommend The Nearly Ultimate Fallout Guide by Per Jorner.

If so, I tried it last year and it was kinda buggy. Also I think fallout 1's engine has a unique charm to it so I think you should stick to fixt. I digress, to each their own I guess.

I think it holds up pretty well. It's only been a couple of days since I finished my latest fallout fixt playthough, haven't seen any bugs. Are you talking about the mod that let's you play the game on fallout 2's engine?

there are a bunch of comments on the video saying this mod is outdated or not good and that "et tu" or something is better, is that true?

Thanks for the information, I'm about to start my third run with a rebalanced character and the hope of succeeding in the first important quest (no spoiler here). I'm old enough to have known RPGs back in the day that didn't hold you by the hand.
