For the formation when you find out what you want to use and what works with your players, I find it really important to get your team accustomed to it in training ASAP. Therefore in preseason slide the 'Scheduling' all the way to the left (more match training), and set focus to 'Match Tactics' - dont worry about the other attributes for now.
Agreed on 'buying players you like vs what you actually need' - it is really important you are not wasting money or spending more than you should and only strengthen areas you need to, annoying thing is this is not always easy until the season has already started (injuries, players forcing moves away, players not pulling their weight or simply they dont fit into your formation).
- If you are low on budget lookout for potential free transfers as backup (Diarra has been a beast as an anchor man for me).
