Intro
Welcome to the one-playthrough achievement guide for the first episode of King's Quest. This guide primarily focuses on grabbing every achievement in one save file of the chapter, which can be done if the right items are used at the right times. Can you do it? WHISPER CAN DO IT! But for those who aren't Whisper, this guide is for you.

This is just an achievement guide, it is not a full game walkthrough. I will not be telling you how to complete the game, I'll be telling you what items to use or actions to do and when to look out for them in order to get achievements.

These kind of challenges can be really fun, but secret achievements can make them more challenging for others if they don't look up what they even are. I, myself, like to at least play once blind (no guides or looking up anything about the secret achievements), see how close I can get, and then look up the achievement names and descriptions (nothing else) and try again. But you can play however you want, and this guide aims to help those who just want all the achievements fast.

There are 17 total achievements in this chapter, 5 public and 12 secret. Only one of the public achievements is missable, so you're guarenteed 4 achievements just for completing the chapter.

You have to be careful of a lot missable achievements, many of which cannot be obtained no matter what at the end of the game. As long as you follow this guide you shouldn't miss any achievements. If, however, you do accidentally do something wrong and miss an achievement, you'll have to start a new start file and play the entire game again until you get to the point for the achievement you missed. Very time consuming.

And I don't know what future chapters have in store, but you better pray they don't have achievements which require certain actions to be done in past episodes, otherwise you'll have to redo all past episodes AND the new episode.

Keep in mind, you'll have to die several times on purpose to trigger certain achievements, so don't follow this guide if you're trying to play the entire episode without dying.

With all that said, let's begin!
Prologue

Napping on the Job (Secret)
"Took a Brief Nap."

When you reach the first bed that you can hide in, go into the bed three times and the narrator will say he took a nap in it.

In The Mouth of Danger (Secret)
"Walk into a Dragon's Mouth."

In the part of the cave where you can step on bones to wake up the dragon, go all the way to the end of the hall and before climbing up the ladder, walk into the dragon. He will wake up and eat you.
Merchant of Miracles

Unicorn Snack Food (Secret)
"Was a Snack for a Majestic Unicorn."

When you get the hatchet, use it on Mr. Fancycakes (the one-eyed "unicorn") four times and he will eat you. THIS CAN ONLY BE DONE BEFORE FIXING THE WHEEL.

A Secret Entrance (Secret)
"Found a Mysterious Cave Entrance."

Walk behind the "unicorns" and you'll find a secret path. Keep walking down it until you reach a dead end in which the narrator says this area is for another day. THIS CAN ONLY BE DONE BEFORE FIXING THE WHEEL.

A Prickly Situation (Secret)
"Walked into the Spiniferous Thornweeds."

In the forest path with the wedzel bushes, the path to get to the well with the dragon in it should be blocked by these thornweeds. Walk into them and die. You can get this achievement now or at any time BEFORE YOU CUT THE THORNWEEDS. If you cut the thornweeds first, you MISS THE ACHIEVEMENT.

Notes:
Also, at this part of the game, make sure when you go into Daventry to find a wheel that you make sure to CLOSE THE DOOR WHEN YOU LEAVE. If you don't, you will trigger a cutscene later where wedzel wolves are in the town and YOU WILL MISS THE HELPING HAT ACHIEVEMENT.

There's also a common misconception among other guides online that you need to buy the enterance ticket from the merchant in order to get an achievement later called "That's the Ticket". This is false for a number of reasons. First of all, it's revealed when you try to present it that the ticket is fake and that there is actually no ticket you can purchase to enter the tournament. The "ticket" referred to enter is actually the eye of a hideous beast, hence the achievement description: "Presented an Eye to enter the Tournament." So you don't have to buy the ticket from him, but even if you don't, the merchant steals gold from you until you only have one no matter what. Even if you don't leave a tip for whatever wheel you get.
Crossing the River

Graham the Basilisk (Secret)
"Walked on Water."

While everyone is trying to find a way to cross the river, instead of tricking the guards and making the raft, first walk along the water until you find a secret small land bridge hidden under the water that can get you across. It's located a little bit after the rocks you climb on to cause distress. After a certain point walking on it, the narrator will say that's not how he did it and bring you back, giving you the achievement. This must be done BEFORE MANNY REVEALS IT, which is BEFORE YOU SWIM ACROSS THE RIVER ON THE RAFT.
Finding an Eye

Horn Blower (Secret)
"Blew on many Horns."

The description of the achievement is deceiving. There's only one horn you can blow on to activate this achievement. This can be done at any point of the game now since does not require the mouthpiece. In fact, it requires NOT using the mouthpiece. In the area right before the frogs, you'll see a red horn, which belongs to Waddles. Blow on the horn nine times without the mouthpiece and the narrator will actually say you deserve an achievement for that and then you get it.

Froggy Throat (Secret)
"Tried to Catch a Toad, Got a Frog in Throat."

Since we're right next to the frog area for that last achievement, let's just grab this one. It can be grabbed at any point in the game now, however. Try to catch a frog six times and, after a few ribbiting puns, you'll get the achievement. Hop to it.

Misteak (Secret)
"Fed a steak to a Wedzel Wolf."

THIS CAN ONLY BE DONE BEFORE GETTING THE BADGER. Use the steak on one of the wedzel bushes in the forest path behind Daventry and you'll be eaten and get the achievement.

Purple Badger Don't Care (Secret)
"A Dyed Badger ate Bees."

This is the most missed achievement and a pain if you do miss it. You need to get the badger using the steak, dip the badger in the pot to make him purple, then go to the picnic, knock down the beehive, and then use the purple badger on the beehive. THIS CAN ONLY BE DONE BEFORE GETTING THE PUMPKIN, BEFORE SAVING THE PICNIC, AND BEFORE FINDING AN EYE. If you get the pumpkin, you lose the badger. If you save the picnic, you have no bees for the badger. If you find an eye, you can't make the badger purple. Also make sure you remove the beehive from the picnic table using the fruit picker before finding the eye, otherwise you will MISS THE HELPING HAT ACHIEVEMENT.

That's the Ticket
"Presented an Eye to enter the Tournament."

As I mentioned before (and it says right in the description), you must present an eye for this achievement. Not the enterance ticket from the merchant. That was a scam. You shouldn't be that surprised, really. This achievement isn't missable, it's story related, HOWEVER if you clear out the thornweeds and go into the dragon well for your eye, make sure you follow the next section for the achievements in there first. If you got your eye from some other way, you'll end up having to go into that well anyways.
Achaka and the Dragon

Dead End Dancer (Secret)
"Danced in the Dark."

At one point in the cave where you see Achaka go down a hole, don't follow him at first. Instead, head past that area and you'll find a long hallway that you can go all the way down. The narrator will try to tell you to go back, but keep going all the way down and the narrator will tell you this is just a dead end. Stay there for a while and eventually the narrator will say you do a few random things. The last of which is a silly dance that gives you the achievement.

Opening Knight (Secret)
"Open door to Achaka three times."

During the arrow and dragon tail puzzle, knock on the door to Achaka three times. He'll slam the door on you each time and you'll get the achievement.
Duels, Helping Hat, and The End?
Note:
DO NOT USE THE SLEEPING FEATHER ON PILLARE'S FOOD. Give it to the potion shop and they will give you a vial of hypnotic powder which you use on Pillare's food instead. The feather is required for the teeth whitening potion to be finished and finishing the potion is required for Helping Hat.

Fast Feather
"Defeated Whisper in the Duel of Speed."

This is story related and cannot be missed. You'll also need Whisper's portrait (which you can get from the announcement board) for after you defeat him. He'll be crying next to the frogs. Give him the portrait to cheer him up, then ask him to catch you a frog, which is required for the Helping Hat achievement.

Strong Minded
"Defeated Acorn in the Duel of Strength."

This is also story related and cannot be missed.

Helping Hat
"Saved a Picnic, Got a Wedzel Patch, Completed the Potion."

The longest achievement to work towards in the chapter. To save the picnic, you knock down the beehive onto the table and then use the fruit picker on it. If at any point you go into the bakery and see his face is full of bee stings, you missed the achievement. If he tells you he's getting married, you saved the picnic. The wedzel patch is never actually given to you in this chapter, however as long as you keep the door closed and you never see a cutscene where wedzel wolves are inside of Daventry, you completed the requirement. For the teeth whitening potion, you need to give the potion shop the sleep feather and a frog. You'll know it's done if the potion itself is white. You're awarded this achievement when the chapter is complete.

The End?
"Told the Story about becoming a Knight."

You get this just for finishing the chapter. Congratulations! Now you can either play again to see what choosing different options do or you can wait a few months for the next chapter.
Outro
And there you have it, every achievement in one playthrough. This game is fantastic and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. Feel free to tell me if there's any alternative ways to activate certain achievements, since I can't exactly reset my achievements (as far as I know anyway). I bought the full game as well so expect another guide for the next chapters.

Purple Badger Don't Care is such a pain in the butt. It's not difficult to do necessarily, but I messed one of the steps up and it took about 40 minutes to get back to it and ultimately get the achievement. If only all cutscenes were skippable...

Fantastic guide dude, this has been an amazing resource.

to get the fruit picker you need to read the note from the bakery but do not disturb the bees. This cut scene will make the guy go home leaving the fruit picker.
