The Game

Pid is a platformer with its amazing artwork and soundtrack. The game can be played in single mode or co-op mode which a friend plays at the same time with you.

In the game you play the kid named Kurt (and Audrey, if playing in Co-Op). The story of Kurt is taken from the game description:

A young boy named Kurt finds himself stranded on a peculiar planet, and he must find his way home. Finding help from unlikely allies and the curious tools in his backpack, Kurt must use gravity-defying beams to conquer every platform and solve every puzzle on this strange journey. Featuring over 12 hours of action-adventure gameplay and fully-realized co-op, players are poised to experience a beautiful world set to an evocative soundtrack. With twenty-two different locations, dozens of foes and hundreds of secrets, Pid is like your world… only different.

The whole game is played without mouse therefore good for laptops :). You will see that the game is like an animation movie which has basically no GUI elements that spoils the beauty of its graphic.

If you have not seen the trailer yet, I recommend it:

First things first
In this manual, I will only give a brief idea about the game, e.g. will not tell all the items that you might encounter, or explanations how to kill a specific boss. In this way, you will keep yourself more in the game. However, I can answer your questions in case you would like to know. It is also worth saying that this is my first manual here :).

Since there is not an official manual, I will start from the basics: The menus...

When you start the game, the following very simple menu will be shown:

Start game

Start game gives three save slots to choose from:

The game itself does not let users save the game when they wanted, but it has checkpoint and auto-save system which is quite handy. If you choose an empty slot, you will start a new game. The game has easy, normal, and hard modes. Hard mode is not enabled until you complete the game. The hard mode has more enemies and the traps are more complex. When you choose an existing game, you will continue from the latest auto-save, not from the latest checkpoint. To delete a save, choose delete, then the slot to be deleted.

The game can be played up to two people:

In single player mode, you are alone, while in co-op mode, another human player on the same computer will join.

Challenge rooms

Challenge rooms are levels which you try to complete within shortest time. Those rooms are quite challenging and you need to be quite good with the tool that you are playing to complete.

Tools will be introduced by the game itself, and you will get used to them as you proceed with the game. Each tool has 9 challenge rooms: 3 with no time limit, 3 with 15 seconds time limit, and 3 with 7 seconds time limit. Try to go as lower as possible since this at the end, the game will submit your score to the leaderboards.

Leaderboards

This is the place where the completion time of the players are stored in. You can go between Global - Friends - Your scores using D and F keys.

Also pressing S toggles between single player mode and co-op mode and jump key (default: Z) displays the statistics for the selected user.

Achievements

Achievements are unlocked by performing specific tasks in their descriptions, but they have no effect on gameplay. Each achievement has its own description on how to obtain it.

In this menu, you are provided with several options to choose from and get a brief information on how to play the game.

The Gameplay
The game starts with a video showing how Kurt came to another planet. You cannot skip the video, so enjoy watching :).

The game consists of many levels. We start with "The Landing", where shows the basic about the gameplay such as key assignments.

The manual will not be a spoiler, but it is worth saying that almost each level has some secrets.

As we walk, we will see some people which might be helpful to interact with them (S, by default) to understand the story and proceed. Throughout the game, there will be sections that you need to talk to people.

Here is the place where the game actually starts. We learn here what Kurt would like to do... If you are playing in co-op mode, here is also the place where we meet our second player, Aubrey (the kid on the right).

Within the game, you will be collecting stars. These stars in the future will be used as a currency for items. Collect as many as you can. If you find some constellations (colored in yellow), each start in a constellation value 2 stars.

Backpack

Pressing backpack key (default: A), will display your inventory. As you proceed, you will collect some items that are used through the game depending on the situation you are in.

On the bottom-left of the screen, you see two blank slots which you use to add items from your backpack. To assign the one to the left use D (if you did not change it), to the right use F (if you did not change it). Note that these keys are also used to use those items.

Pressing souvenir key (default: S), will display your souvenirs, which might be found in secret places. These places are mostly places that you will normally not see or think that there is nothing there.

Enemies

All red and blue characters are your enemies. If you have an armor, you will die in two touch (in the future levels, armor can block two damage - so three touch), otherwise one... You have no health bar, but they do. Some of the enemies die with one item, some of them with two or even more...

(This is not a cute puppy robot)

Saves

The game saves itself automatically when a padlock icon is seen. It saves always between the levels. The game also has checkpoints where you start when you die, but when you load a game, you start from the latest save, not from the latest checkpoint.

Hints
Here, I list some hints that I have found during the game. If you find more, I can update the list:

  • A beam lasts for 9 seconds and Kurt can throw two beams at the same time.
  • If you add the third beam, the first beam you have thrown will be removed.
  • Beams can be cancelled in order of thrown by pressing cancel beam (default: C) key. Sometimes you will find this handy.
  • Beams affect all objects in red colour, but not in blue.
  • Beams also cannot be thrown into blue fields.
  • If you press Down + Beam key, Kurt will throw the beam exactly his below.
  • If you die, your used items also will be restored when you are sent to latest checkpoint. So, if you think that you could have passed that section without using a limited item, consider killing yourself.
  • The rockets of enemies also kill each other. If you think that you can change the direction of a rocket, use them to kill themselves.
  • You do not have to kill all enemies.
  • Speed of rockets also can be changed using beams.
