Impossible Creatures: Beginner's Guide
By purple™
A Beginner's Guide to Impossible Creatures.
This guide is being built up both based on my own personal playing experience and the help from readers. Now, I am not the best at this game, but I do know enough to give players that little boost that they need. Feel free to comment any additions, I'll gladly tag you in them, or let you create a section all on your own! And obviously, as the game gets more and more features added to it (like Steam Workshop functionality), we'll see an influx of new players, which means more people wondering how in the hell this game works.

Like many other helpful Steam Guides, this is meant to simply push you off your seat into the flaming cesspool that is (was?) the Impossible Creatures community. I plan on making more guides about this game relating to story and various other things throughout the game.

NOTE: Some information I might have grabbed from other websites and stuff, so I'll link those unless they were shut down or the thread they originated from died off.

Intro
This guide is most effective for teaching newer players the basics to creature creation and a few basic strategies to teach them to play. If you happen to have any other tips of your own, feel free to comment down below.

------------------------

Not all of the things you see here are accurate. The guide will be changing quite frequently now that I have some more freetime. As I have said and will say a million times, don't be afraid to share your ideas and strategies to me. I'm still learning, too.

------------------------

With that said, please share this guide with your friends and favorite it, I'd like to see as many players of this game as possible begin to learn what a gem this game is.
Strategies - Building
Hopefully you know how to build structures. BUT, there is some more that you need to know about building structures that you might not know already.
  • Holding the SHIFT button and clicking while placing buildings allows you to place more than one without constantly clicking back
  • Use the quickbinds to quickly find a building and throw it down

A simple starter tip is to create bramble trenches, by simply placing brambles down 1 space apart. This allows your henchmen to run in between them to repair structures or move to another location without taking damage from non-ranged units.

Another tip is to place AA and SB towers in the center of a bramble X. This way, they will be hard to hit, but easy to repair.

Don't jump straight for generator upgrades. You could be spending that coal on more important things like research or defensive buildings!
Strategies - Army
A good army is one that suits your own play-style. If you're defensive, then create some ranged creatures with good damage and health. If you are offensive, make something you can spam but can take and deliver a beating in combat. If you don't know what to start out with, here are some simple armies to start from scratch with:

Lvl. 1 - Armadillo / Mountain Lion
Lvl. 2- Lobster / Mountain Lion
Lvl. 2 - Frog / Zebra/Ant OR Electric Eel
Lvl. 3- Komodo Dragon / Rattle Snake
Lvl. 3 - Lioness / Dolphin
Lvl. 4 - Horse / Rattle Snake
Lvl. 4 - Killer Whale / Coyote
Lvl. 5 - Lobster / Elephant
Lvl. 5 - Baboon / Sperm Whale

Lvl 1: Coyote / Dragonfly
Lvl 2: Cheetah / Termite
Lvl 2 (Ranged): Chimp / Bombardier Beetle
Lvl 3: Ram / Scorpion OR Lobster
Lvl 3 (Ranged): Chameleon / Polar Bear OR Grizzly Bear
Lvl 4: Rattlesnake / Horse OR Tiger
Lvl 4: Cheetah / Snapping Turtle OR Panther / Anteater
Lvl 5: Moose / Lobster OR Wooly Mammoth / Dragonfly

Armies don't have to be one set type, however. Create the army that suits you best, and feel free to comment down below your favorite army.

NOTE: All of these armies come from this forum site[forums.relicnews.com], so please, give them credit. Not me.
Strategies - Play-styles
No two people play the game the same way. Everybody does something different from the last. Players can play off of three main play-styles, Offense, Defense, and Support.

OFFENSE:
An offensive player is designed to rush early-mid game with powerful creatures, and able to destroy entire teams at late-game. These players usually use a lot of coal and electricity in this process, however, and are vulnerable during one of their assaults.

DEFENSE:
A defensive player can defend themselves, while doing a little damage to the enemies as well. Usually situated around their home base, these players are more focused on building than creating creatures. They can be found at their weakest during early-mid game, when their coal and electricity levels are low.

SUPPORT:
A supporting player assists their teammates by supplying them with coal, electricity, and even a little backup during a fight. Since they're too focused on defending their allies, they can be wiped out quite easily in mid-late game.
End
This is all information I've found within my time of playing the game. Feel free to add whatever you want in the comments. I'll update based on new information I receive from both you guys and myself.

Also, if you guys submit something, I'll gladly tag you for the info. I also plan on adding pictures after Christmas break.
Author Notes/Edits
I do apologize for not updating this list very often. Once I get the last couple of upgrades for my PC I will finally get myself back into playing this game. I could start playing it now, of course, but I just want to have my computer problems out of the way.

Just use melee to kill the skunks first.

Use cheaper units to force the skunk's gas cloud, then use your ranged units + some stronger melee.

I'm playing the campaign, only have level2s and one level 3. The computer uses the skunk ability to nullify all my ranged attacks, constantly. Is there any way around this?

If you only have one level 5, you'll die in a serious game. Level 1 is useless, so replace those level 1 slots with level 5s. Ideally, you want one of each damage type: melee, range, and artillery.
