Main rules to follow
  • The main strategy is simple. You should always keep the shift key pressed. While running,
    collect stuff along the way as fast as you can. The game is generating corridors, rooms and stuff randomly, so don't bother finding the way back, just run straight on. If you’re definitely sure you have a few seconds, you can enter the room and pick up the page / item.
  • Do not try to juke Hatman – this does NOT work anymore.
  • Do not even think about hiding. With one of the updates, hatman was reworked, so even if you "hide" in any room/toilet, he will know about you hiding there. He will not go away even if you "hide", crouch and turn off the light. He will wait for you outside the room, so you’ll have to restart the game, because you’ll be trapped. There is also one weird feature. If he had never once seen you, hiding strategy barely works. However you will never know if he had seen you earlier. You better use running strategy anyway.
  • Avoid stairs If you have a choice between using stairs or a corridor - choose corridor. Double stairs and square spiral stairs are the places where Hatman will spawn with high chance. I once specially waited for some time looking in the stairs doorway. Hatman appeared out of nowhere three meters in front of me. However, if stairs are the only choice, you’ll have to use them, but do it fast.
  • Avoid being trapped in the corridor with the deadly pit if you don't have a crowbar. Because there is a very high chance that Hatman will be on your back and so you will stuck and will have to restart.
  • Don't be shy and use televisions as much as possible to save your game. ( If you want two achievements about beating the game without saving - don't use TVs, make it edgy >:D )
  • The breaking point is when you pick up an old fuse in the electropathy room. Hatman turns into the ghost of the daughter right after you pick up the fuse. He is faster in this form. He can spawn even closer to you than in the beginning of the game. And it is then harder to lose him.
  • It might sound risky, but do not hasten the plot. When you pick up matches and crowbar, just moon around to find 1-2 pages before picking up machine handle. Moon around after taking the fuse. Try to find as many pages as you can before going down to the basement. Next - try to find 1-2 more pages at the basement after taking the hammer. Finding as much pages as possible before getting up from the basement will significantly simplify last part of the game.
  • The hardest part is to find the last pages when you get up from the basement. These 3-5 pages are the hardest in the whole game. The game will lead you to the morgue and other ways will have a high chance of being dead end. The main tactics here is to run around morgue in circles because nearly all pages will spawn near TV or in the bathroom in the morgue.
pro tips
  • There is one way to cheat Hatman. After picking the fuse Hatman will turn into the girl but if you are able to slip very close past him, he will roar in an effort to catch you and will turn back into his big form. This will simplify avoiding him later as you will be able to see his glowing again. However his speed will remain the same as girl's.
  • When you open the journal, in-game time stops and you can read the page.
  • Unlike other stairs, straight stairs leading to the lower room with ventilation can be very helpful, so don’t be loath to use it. You can escape from Hatman using this stairs because he will lose the vision of you.
  • The game can generate a page in the venting hole mentioned above, so listen carefully. But be careful – if Hatman is too close, he can fly through textures and kill you even in the ventilation.
  • Put on notice that both rooms which are connected to each other by ventilation are literally inapproachable to Hatman. However, Hatman can reach you in the ventilation itself.
  • Spoiler After you make your way back to daughter’s room, take cross and enter some kind of a temple. First thing you should do is to stab the ghost lying on the pedestal with cross and only then you burn the diary with matches.
achievements
  1. Paranormally Active Run into 50 shadow people.
    You have to kill 50 shadows with your torch in the first room (your starting position). You don’t have to do it in one walkthrough, you have to collect 50 in sum.
    (The counter of shadows in the achievement section is broken.)

  2. A Good Book Listen to your daughter read all the pages of her journal in a game BEFORE the last scene when you run to the light door, open the journal and listen to daughter’s voice reading all pages. Don’t hurry and wait until the voice will definitely stop reading. If you missed this point, be sure to have saved game to go back and read the pages, because you will lose an opportunity to read any of 21 pages after the light door.
    After the light door you can open the journal and listen to daughter's words of joy on the last (22nd) page.

  3. Superior Apparition + Ectoplasmic Entity Finish the game without loading a saved game and without saving along the way
    Rely on your own experience, sense of hearing (better use headphones), always be on alert, run carefully and use everything mentioned above.
