Class summary
In short classes are like this
  • Fighters become Paladins and are the best at melee combat
  • Thieves have the most skills and can easily raise statistics
  • Wizards require the least investment but are almost helpless without magic
Gameplay wise however you fall into either
  • a melee warrior stronger in combat but unable to use magic to attack in battle most of the time
  • a Trickster relying on magic or skills to overcome puzzles and battles
Warriors
Both a fighter and a paladin fall under the warrior classification they have a sword and shield which makes combat significantly easier however cannot use magic in fights with most games in the series. This makes magic a utility resource mainly used outside combat to protect from spells or solve puzzles you have difficulty figuring out. Keep in mind magic if known is expected to be used for puzzles.

Puzzle points from using spells to solve problems will often be missed however if you get stuck use whatever you can. Paladins will gain some spell like abilities to make up for the lack of other spells in combat that improve your power at the cost of stamina. Normal magic can still be used like throwing weapons to weaken targets before combat begins.
Tricksters
Thieves and magic users (Wizards) are tricksters gathering a collection of useful items or spells to solve problems. They lack in combat and use spells or throwing weapons to help weaken their foes.

Thieves are limited by what they can find and use special skills to overcome most problems. Stealing is also more easily done by thief characters however magic users can do this as well. Spells can also be used in combat to help make up for damage you may be lacking in.

Magic can do most of the same things a thief can however they rely on mana and finding spells instead of skills and items. Stealth is often needed to rob places without being caught and is almost a must have skill as it allows you avoid most unnecessary battles to save mana. Without the lock pick skill as well you will miss out on potential targets to rob or be unable to sell some stolen items.
Paladins
To become a paladin simply import from a previous game in the 3rd, 4th or 5th game you will be able to choose any class to play. Fighters may also become paladins part way through the 3rd game for story reasons and can switch back to a normal fighter when they import to the next game. Their special magic does not have the restrictions of other magic.

The paladins gain extra powers from their reputation doing good deeds however this is optional and no penalties are given for being a selfish cruel mercenary at times. Having a poor reputation will simply mean you have little to no powers as a paladin. This class is only available to play when importing a character into the 3rd of the series or later. Should the player not want to be a paladin they can continue playing a fighter instead which has a different story in Quest for Glory 4 and plays differently in Quest for Glory 5.
Thieving
In order to steal anything you need to have 2 skills
  • Sneaking to avoid getting caught
  • *Lock Picking to be able access the thieves guild
Any character with these skills can greatly increase the amount of money they get during the course of a game however this comes at the cost of honor. People will also need to get either a lock pick item or the open spell to be able to open locks. Since there are tricks to raise honor in most games of the series it isn't a big deal losing honor for stealing.

*in the fourth game magic users are unable get the hints to enter the thieves guild and fence items however you can still rob people for a nice amount of coin. Any class can still enter the guild but it is harder to do so.
Getting everything
Starting the game with a Thief is the only way to ensure you can use all skills apart from parry if starting from the 3rd game or later. Once you reach the next game you should have basic skills in every area you can use and have some idea of what sort of character you want to play.

Leave the skills you don't want alone as they will be raised to minimum values at the start of each game in the series. Using a skill you have neglected to practice doesn't take much work to get it to a useful level and is easier to raise in later games. Lock picking is the only skill that requires a tool to increase and most magic is either already known or easily obtainable.
Don't be a jack of all trades
With most characters is is usually best sticking to your class skills only using others when they seem convenient. Solutions to problems will not always give puzzle points for your final score unless using your class skills.

Improving all skills takes a lot of time and you may only find it worthwhile if you are having trouble in battle to increase maximum health, stamina or mana.
  • Magic involves casting spells over and over.
  • Thieving requires you find a nice quiet area to pick locks, climb trees or just walk around sneaking.
  • Combat usually requires you fight something however you can run away most of the time by hitting "esc" key on the top left of your keyboard
Getting all skills to maximum will take hours and a lot of recovery items or frequent resting. Skills generally are easier to raise in later games and will be raised to a minimum level when importing from previous games.
Character training - Primary statistics
Physical statistics are easy to raise just work on your skills and they will grow. Thief skills seem to work best for training everything as the carry little to no risk. For the first two games of the series it is easy and fairly safe to train up all your skills.

Strength – Raised by climbing, throwing and weapon use
Intelligence – By successful dodging/blocking, thieving and magic
Agility – By most thieving skills, throwing, blocking or dodging
Vitality – Anything that requires stamina will raise this slowly
Luck – By successful blocks or dodging
Character training - Quest for Glory 1
  • Weapon use is easily raised by attacking goblins (goblins are best found four screens west of the healer's house)
  • Block by using the dodge on the bottom left also known as shield block to fighters
  • Dodge by using a dodge button
  • Sneak by switching basic movement to it and using it to travel everywhere
  • Pick locks by trying to pick the healers door outside town
  • Throwing by using the hand action on the ground outside town to pick up stones which can be thrown anywhere to increase skill
  • Climbing the tree outside the healers place
  • Magic by first working on either thief skills or dodging to raise intelligence to give more mana available. Using magic to help kill goblins allows you to easily get some money that can be spent on mana potions to help offset the cost of these recovery items. (goblins are best found four screens west of the healer's house)
Character training - Quest for Glory 2 (VGA)
  • Weapon use at the adventurers guild by challenging Uhura
  • Block use at the adventurers guild by challenging Uhura
  • Dodge use at the adventurers guild by challenging Uhura
  • Sneak by switching basic movement to it and using it to travel everywhere but be careful as it now drains stamina then health if out of stamina which can eventually kill you.
  • Pick locks almost any door on the streets of the city (not a plaza)
  • Throwing by using the hand action on the ground outside town then throwing the stones you pick up anywhere
  • Climbing the cliffs the griffon is resting by until you have enough skill to climb the tree by the hermit at the oasis (need 80 for the tree and it may still fail sometimes)
  • Communication by buying flowers and giving them to Uhura at the adventurers guild
  • Honor by buying flowers and giving them to Uhura at the adventurers guild
  • Magic is again difficult to raise and requires a large investment in mana recovery items. Best done last when you have raised intelligence as recovery items give a percentage of maximum mana and communication also raised for a 40% discount from most purchases
Character training - Quest for Glory 3
  • Weapon use by fighting random encounters
  • Block by fighting random encounters
  • Dodge by fighting random encounters
  • Sneak by switching basic movement to it and using it to travel everywhere but be careful as it drains stamina not used on main travel map between areas
  • Pick locks almost no use in this game can be ignored
  • Throwing by using the hand action on the ground outside town then throwing the stones you pick up anywhere
  • Climbing trees
  • Communication by talking with people
  • Honor by giving the drummer in town money or talking about certain topics
  • Paladin raises with honor
  • Magic is again difficult to raise and requires frequent resting can rest at Leopardman village to restore mana and train skills faster.
Character training - Quest for Glory 4
  • Weapon use by fighting random encounters
  • Block by fighting random encounters best done with rabbits as they pose very little threat
  • Dodge by fighting random encounters best done with rabbits as they pose very little threat
  • Sneak by switching basic movement to it and using it to travel everywhere but be careful as it now drains stamina
  • Pick locks can be raised in the castle each door having the option to pick the lock provided you have gotten the lockpick from the thieves guild. The thieves guild doesn't have any hints for wizards to find it.
  • Throwing by using the hand action on the ground outside town then throwing the stones you pick up anywhere
  • Climbing raised either in the adventurers guild or with some trees outside town
  • Communication by talking with people
  • Honor by giving flowers to people
  • Magic is again difficult to raise and requires frequent resting best to practice around Erana's garden where you can fetch mana restore items from the tree once per day
  • Can also train strength at the adventurers guild on the diabolical machine

Exporting the character
When you complete the game import the character like this
C:(Name).sav
  • Go into the directory for steam (Steam/Steamapps/Common/Quest for glory collection/)
  • Then select the number in the series for example QG1
  • Copy the saved file in the folder and paste it in the next game's folder in this case QG2
  • Start Quest for Glory 2 and choose import character Select your saved game
  • You now have all your skills transferred and most of your items.
Unfortunately some items may be lost when moving to the next game in the series or you are limited in how much you can transfer between games.

Common bugs or ways to break the game
Many events in the game series will only take place after a set time has past and so if you cannot progress then try resting for up to 3 days. Also if you have magic you may need to use it in puzzles instead of other possible solutions.

When playing any game in the series leave the game speed alone near cutscenes. Changing the speed will cause the game to bug and may prevent you from doing anything.Speed changes while preforming other actions can also cause this but happens less often.

Quest for Glory 2 has a lot of time limits unlike other games in the series. Should you fail to meet one of these deadlines it results in a game over. Create a separate save at the start of each game day to avoid having to restart the game. There are also only 16 days in the main city for this game so you may want to use lots of recovery items to help with time constraints. Fortunately other games in the Quest for Glory series do not have a time limit.

Quest for Glory 4 Notes will appear in your room after a certain amount of time has past. When you read the notes you need to obey them or possibly break the game rendering you unable to complete it.

Quest for Glory 4 Wizard at the end can become bugged and unable to use any magic they need to complete the game. Fire a seccond shot down at the bottom of the screen and then you can select other spells to cast.

Quest for Glory 5 arresting the bank thief can mess up many triggers in the game. Unsure of exactly what causes this but leaves some things unable to be completed. Ferrari for example disappears from the game.
