Forward: What's this all about, Duio??
Hello!

In designing Equin: The Lantern (my first roguelike) I had to come up with some gameplay elements to always keep things interesting for players. A big part of this in my opinion has been the 18 various Floor Events that can occasionally spring up from time to time while playing.

Another cool idea I had for this is that the longer you go without seeing any special floor events the higher chance you'll have of getting one the next floor. This way you're bound to get something soon enough.

But only by understanding how floor events work and when they can potentially show up is your key to DUNGEON MASTERY-NESS.

And hopefully you won't end up like my last run and die by grass poisoning of all things..

Rain Floor
Rain Floor
============
May Appear: Floors 2+
Hero's Quote: "Indoor Rain?!" , "A Storm's a Brewing!"

Pros: Increased chance of flowers, Fish bite more often in ponds, Mushrooms may appear
Cons: Increased chance of poison grass, Killer Plants may appear, Can't light non-magic fires
Other: All Lightning damage +100%, All Fire damage -50%. Random lightning bolts on later floors

Possibly the very first floor event you'll end up seeing is indoor rain. Along with a case of pruny hands you'll see a vastly increased amount of all sorts of plantlife on the floor. If you're unlucky you'll also see Killer Plants- by far the strongest enemies you'll face on the upper dungeon floors. Make sure to pay attention to the grass you're stepping on too, as the poisonous variety flashes.

The best thing about Rain Floors is the fishing. You will be able to catch all manner of fish a lot easier while it's raining. Edible flowers will be all over the place which will help you conserve the food already stored in your backpack for later on.

You won't be able to light any non-magical fires while it's raining. That means if you happen to get a Darkness Floor with rain you won't easily be able to light the place up with a torch. You won't be able to use a campfire here either.

Dev's Note:
As of 9/9/17 random lightning bolts will appear during rainstorms from floors 21+. If you're hit by a bolt of lightning (and aren't protected by a resist lightning effect) you'll take 10 hazard damage. If a bolt strikes an enemy though it will be killed.

Dev's Note #2:
As of 1/2/18 I've made it so that the rain influences fire and lightning element damage for both the player and the enemies. All fire damage is cut in half by 50% and all lightning damage is doubled when it's raining. This also opens up a good wizard strategy now: Hold onto those Rain Scrolls until boss floors and zap the crap out of them!

Storage Floor
Storage Floor
============
May Appear: Floors 2-6
Hero's Quote: "A secret storage!"

Pros: Increased chance of barrels, chests, and doors
Cons: Only enemies are plague rats and were rat champs, which can be tough early on. All doors are locked and require lockpicking to open.

An early floor event that can get you gobs of food supplies if you're lucky, storage floors are easily distinguishable by their orangey-brown bricks and tons of barrels. In addition, these places have an increased chance to spawn both doors and chests. Keep in mind that any chest located in storage has a slightly higher chance of being locked too.

Storage floors will only have plague and were rats as enemies. Were rats can be tough for early adventurers, so tread lightly!

Slithering Floor
Slithering Floor
============
May Appear: Floors 3-11
Hero's Quote: "Slithering Sounds?!"

Pros: Good source of early XP
Cons: Possible high number of Deadly Asps while you're still weak

Slithering Floors are only populated by snakes and their champ cousins. These can be great sources for early XP if you're strong enough to deal with a potentially high rate of Deadly Asp enemies. Be warned that any snake can easily poison you with their bite, ending your adventure earlier than planned.

Disruption Floor
Disruption Floor
============
May Appear: Floors 3+
Hero's Quote: "Which way is up?!"

Pros: None.
Cons: Movement controls on the map are reversed, Compasses won't work

One of the new floor events, introduced in the "Cult of the Dragon King" expansion pack. This strange disruptive force fills the dungeon with many odd magic bubbles that move in every direction known ever. Confusing and terrible, your character will seem to walk in every way you DON'T want them to!

The disruptive force also stops your compass and any other items that have a compass effect from working.

Disruption events can stack with many other floor events and really make them a lot harder. That may be its biggest downside of all.

Dev's Note:
The controls are only reversed while moving around the map. Controls function the same everywhere else, including your backpack, combat, the shops, and the sub menu.

Darkness Floor
Darkness Floor
============
May Appear: Floor 4+
Hero's Quote: "Surrounded by darkness!"

Pros: Mushrooms grow in the darkness and can provide emergency food
Cons: Higher odds of getting ambushed, lower melee accuracy, limited visibilty

One of the most common floors you're likely to run into are darkness events. Surrounded by the darkness of the dungeon, your already limited field of vision is even more so. You'll have to be very careful while walking around that you don't run smack into some tough monster carelessly. Darkness floors can easily be dispatched by using a torch, setting up a campfire, or using an item that offers another form of light source. It's very important to note that any non-magical light source won't be able to be used if it's also raining.

Dev's Note:
If you choose the Nightvision bonus at character level 10 not only will you be able to see everything again, you'll never be ambushed and will gain a +15% chance to hit things. Wow!

Time Bomb Floor
Time Bomb Floor
============
May Appear: Floors 5+
Hero's Quote: "Time Bomb! Get Out Fast!"

Pros: Not many, see below
Cons: Get to the ladder before the timer runs down or die instantly

Time Bomb floors have the nasty side effect of turning any floor into a hectic situation for anyone. The counter on the bomb represents how many steps / turns you have to take before it will go off and kill everything on the floor, most especially you. As the bomb will not count down unless you actually move a space or wait a turn you can take your time and plan a strategy accordingly.

There is a possible bonus to getting a Time Bomb floor- If you are equipped with the Blast Suit armor you will be able to survive the blast when the counter reaches zero. If this happens the bomb will wipe out all the monsters and you'll be able to freely explore the floor in relative safety. You can also survive a bomb blast if you have an active Angel Token in play.

Dev's Note:
The number on the counter is directly tied to how large the current dungeon floor is. Therefore, smaller dungeon floors will have much lower counters than larger ones.

Anti-Magic Field Floor
Anti-Magic Field Floor
============
May Appear: Floors 5+
Hero's Quote: "Anti-Magic Field!!"

Pros: All enemy magic spells will fail when cast
Cons: All your magic spells will also fail!

The purple Anti-Magic Field Floor is an extremely powerful natural occurence that can appear with any other floor events. Its supreme power is such that any magic spells cast while in it are immediately fizzled out. This goes for any magic spells that might also be on your weapons in battle. Sometimes you may find the Anti-Magic beacon itself and de-activate it.

Wizards especially should be cautious when walking through an anti-magic zone.

Dev's Note:
The healing and stamina powers of the Totem work differently than conventional magic, and are not affected by an anti-magic field.

Infestation Floor
Infestation Floor
============
May Appear: Floors 8+
Hero's Quote: "A monster infestation!"

Pros: Automatic XP bonus, Increased chance of Jail Cells
Cons: Giant increase in monster numbers

Very often you'll run into a floor that's been totally overrun with monsters. Infestation floors are easily spotted by their light greenish brick walls and of course gobs of enemies everywhere. There is an XP bonus for every monster killed here, and adventurers can even go up a few levels on a single floor.

Graveyard Floor
Graveyard Floor
============
May Appear: Floors 11+
Hero's Quote: "I hate graveyards!"

Pros: Increased chance of Shadow Chests and Bones, All poisonous grass is dead already
Cons: Increased chance of webs, The Ghost boss may appear

Graveyard Floors are black brick floors filled with bats, zombies, skeletons, and the occasional super mega Ghost boss. There's a higher than average chance of those bats and skeletons being champs too. Any poison grass that was going to be found here is already thankfully dead, and sometimes you'll see little tombstones scattered about too.

Though still incredibly rare to find normally, black Shadow chests DO have a higher chance of appearing in any Graveyard Floor so try to explore thoroughly if it's safe to do so.

A Graveyard Floor has a 1 in 3 chance of the Ghost appearing, who is a very tough customer. Unlike the game's other bosses the Ghost can be encountered and killed multiple times per playthrough.

Dev's Note:
As of 11/12/16 there's also an increased chance that shops found in a graveyard are a Cultist instead. Since I can't really decide whether this is a PRO or a CON, it goes here down at the bottom!

Trap Floor
Trap Floor
============
May Appear: Floors 11+
Hero's Quote: "It's a Trap!!...Floor"

Pros: Increased chance of getting better loot from all chests
Cons: All trapped chests appear as normal chests (unless you're a thief!)

These floors can exist with almost every other type of floor event and can be very dangerous, especially when dealing with the higher tier golden and shadow chest traps.

A true luck of the draw: Do you open a chest and hope it's not trapped or do you forego a slew of possible better treasures and make for the ladder? Don't you just love choices like these??

If you're a Thief, however, this floor's powers will have no effect on you. So loot away!

Inferno Floor
Inferno Floor
============
May Appear: Floors 11+
Hero's Quote: "It's hot as hell!"

Pros: None
Cons: Tons of floor fires, No ponds, Carried eggs may hatch!

This heated floor exists just to mess with you. The most dangerous aspect is the many fire hazards you'll see everywhere. If you have any wooden equipment on while you step through a fire it will burn away and be destroyed so be very careful. If you have to pass through the fires remember you can always unequip your wooden gear before entering the flames.

Floor 20, home of the Rift Fiend boss, will always be an Inferno Floor.

Dev's Note: As of September 2018, walking around an inferno floor with an Egg in your backpack has a small chance to hatch into a Klucka-Kaze, a tough baby chicken with samurai headband!

Icebox Floor
Icebox Floor
============
May Appear: Floors 13+
Hero's Quote: "It's freezing!"

Pros: Increased chance of a campfire appearing, Enemies will have reduced stamina.
Cons: Stamina doesn't recover over time naturally and Hunger rate is doubled. Champions freed from jail are Frost Giants and Shovels will break if used. The Construct boss may appear, rarely.

The POLAR opposite of an Inferno floor, GET IT? Oh I slay me.. Anyhow there's not too much to like about an Icebox floor aside from snow sure looks cool. The worst part about these places is natural stamina recovery usually done through walking or waiting is impossible. It doesn't help that you'll become much more hungry while here either. The good news is that any monster you encounter who's been living here for awhile has also been suffering and will have reduced stamina when you fight them.

Be VERY VERY sure you want to open jail cells on Icebox floors as they will always hold a Frost Giant, the cyclops champion.

NOTE: If you go to use a shovel here unfortunately it'll break upon the hard icy ground.

Plague Floor
Plague Floor
============
May Appear: Floors 18+
Hero's Quote: "The stink of death!"

Pros: More bones on the ground, if you have the Cursed Mofo status this is pretty good
Cons: All enemies may give you the plague in battle! This sucks!

This mid to late game event can really darken your day. A floor riddled with disease and tons of dead guys / bones all over the ground, each enemy you fight will gain an attack which might give you the plague in battle. Plague is a new status ailment as of 8/18/18 which reduces your physical DEF by 5-10 points. Unlike other negative effects, the plague won't normally go away. Additionally, Shops and Guilds won't let you enter while diseased (Cultist Dens will, however).

There are 4 ways to rid yourself of Plague:
  • Use a container of Vitrox B
  • Use a Cure Powder
  • Drink from any water well
  • Touch an Xtoli statue and get fully healed (about a 10% chance for this to happen)

Treasure Floor
Treasure Floor
============
May Appear: Floors 21+
Hero's Quote: "This place is a goldmine!"

Pros: Increased chance of gold deposits, increased chance of treasure chests
Cons: Only chest type enemies for non-bosses, including Death Boxes!

Lucky is he who stumbles upon a treasure floor- spotted by its solid gold brick walls you'll know right away you're in the right place. All non-boss enemies here are going to either be Chest Monsters or Death Boxes. There's also a greatly enhanced chance to find more treasure chests and gold deposits here too.

The hardest part about treasure floors are the enemies found within. Since chest type enemies have stats and HP that scale to the dungeon floor they're found on, they can be incredibly dangerous at the lowest floors. Death Boxes in particular can be as deadly as the game's hardest bosses, so be prepared or run for it!

Quiet Floor
Quiet Floor
============
May Appear: Floors 25+
Hero's Quote: "It's quiet.. Too quiet!"

Pros: Increased chance of bones, Only one enemy will appear
Cons: But that enemy is the Reaper Boss, Always a Dark Floor

The Quiet Floor can appear once per playthrough. It's an empty floor filled with many bones and always dark. The sole inhabitant here is the Reaper, a very powerful optional boss creature. If you can manage to kill it the reward will be a shadow chest 100% of the time. Since it IS such a powerful enemy you may want to try and find a way around him to the exit ladder instead.

Dev's Note:
Don't you just love enemies like these in your games? Haha!

Coven Floor
Coven Floor
============
May Appear: Floors 28+
Hero's Quote: "A coven of weirdos!"

Pros: Any shops or guilds will be Cult Dens 100% of the time, Greatly increased chance of Shadow Chests, Chance to find gear unique to these floors.
Cons: Every enemy is a cultist or worse..

New to the "Cult of the Dragon King" expansion pack is the chance a floor will have a ton of these jerks living on it. Cultists can cast some low-level spells, dodge, poison and even steal your gear but it's the High Priests you have to worry about. Extremely strong in both magic and HP, they even have command over the dreaded death magic.

But worst of all is you might stumble upon the Dragon King himself, newly resurrected and all that jazz. He probably is pretty tough. Yes, that's an understatement!

Coven floors are unique because upon opening a locked golden or shadow chest there's a chance to find special gear you can't get anywhere else in the game. You'll know right away because it'll have a blue name tag. It's always a good idea to seek these out.

Dev's note:
What if you're playing a cultist yourself? These guys have no qualms about trying to kill you either!

Arena of Death
Arena of Death
============
May Appear: Floors 35+
Hero's Quote: "The arena of death!"

Pros: Great XP if you can survive everything, Increased Chance of Shadow Chests
Cons: Every enemy is a champion

An Arena of Death is a special event that can only occur once per playthrough. Unlike the other dungeon floors there are a few preset layouts specially made for these. Any enemy who spawns here will always be a champion. These are usually true tests of your mettle and should you want to flee to the exit ladder you might have a hard time getting past all these guys first!

Boss Floor
Boss Floor
============
Will Appear: Floors 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, and 50
Hero's Quote: "An evil force is nearby!!"

Pros: Bosses will drop awesome loot and award Xtoli Points (XTP) if defeated
Cons: Many bosses are very difficult to kill, Boss battles are impossible to flee from

The one thing you can count on in this game (aside from the difficulty) is that you'll always run into most boss fights on specific floors. Bosses will spawn at the exit ladder as well, so you're going to have to use some TRICKERY if you want to lure it out to get past it and down to the next floor. If you are able to defeat a boss you'll get either a golden chest or (rarely) a shadow chest afterwards.

Dev's Notes:
Aside from these set boss floors you can also fight more optional & rare bosses in the game- Be sure to check my official ETL Boss Guide for more info!

Yeah, I should've thought about the possibility. Well played.

It makes sense though, doesn't it?

Sheez I wished I read these earlier for some runs, I had to discover a few nasty surprises by experience. My first ever time to use a shovel for a swift escape against Constructor *breaks on icy floor*. Well, sh*t.
