Intro
Welcome! This guide is here to hopefully give you a rough idea as to what you need to do to obtain each achievement in Shadow Complex Remastered. If you see any errors or have advice, please feel free to leave a comment or send me a message.

I highly recommend that you try to complete the game on your own first, as discovering things can be a big part of what makes metroidvanias fun.

Note: This guide contains minor spoilers. Proceed at your own risk :)
List of Missable Achievements
With the exception of a few ending-based achievements, there is only one event in the game which makes it possible to miss achievements you would normally get in a single playthrough. This point of no return occurs right before the end of the game, a little after the factory segment. It occurs when you walk into a domed room: the bad guy will talk to you through some tvs, and then you will have to complete an escape the explosions sequence.

Sucessfully getting to the end of the explosions will save your game, locking you out of some achievements on that playthrough if you did not already get them. Dying during the explosions or resetting before finishing will put you back before the event, allowing you to continue exploring. So if you want to get as many achievements as you can in one run through, try not to complete the escape the explosions segment before you are done collecting stuff.

Here is a list of achievements which are no longer possible after the point of no return:
  • From Alpha To Omega ( If you don't get the Inertial Element shotgun located in the area )
  • Walkin' on Water
  • Completionist (as a result of From Alpha to Omega)

----

In addition to the point of no return, it is possible to "miss" the various ending-related achivements during your first playthrough. Here is a list of missable achivements not related to the point of no return:
  • Status Update: Single (no longer obtainable after rescuing Claire from XOS-1 enemies )
  • Gets Better With Age (missed by collecting too many items)
  • Minimalist (missed by collecting too many items)
  • The Insurgent (missed by collecting too many items)
  • Jason Bailey (timed)
  • ChAIRness (timed)
Status Update: Single and Gets Better With Age are fairly achievable in your first run if you are really trying to be efficient about your achievements. Both can easily be missed by progressing through the game naturally. If you want to get them on your first playthrough you can find detailed info below.

The rest will likely require a specialized runthrough with the sole purpose of obtaining that achievement.

Detailed info on each of these achievements is listed in the Completion Challeneges section.
Story
Achievements you will likely get in your first playthrough via following the storyline.

To Kill A Blackbird
Destroy the helicopter attacking the vice president

Awarded for blowing up the helicopter at the start of the game.

Reunited
Rescue Claire

Awarded for rescuing Claire from Mr. Sweet within the complex. Part of the main storyline.

Itsy Bitsy Spider
Defeat a Spidertank by drowning it

After getting the CLD Thrust Pack from the High Security Lab, you will head to
a cave like section. The spidertank returns as a miniboss here, where you
need to bait the tank into shooting water valves.

Hero
Complete the game on any difficulty setting

Beat the game. Nothing more, nothing less. Congrats!
Collectables
All of these achievements revolve around collecting stuff. Note that at character level 20 you unlock the game map which shows the location of all powerups. Alternatively, one can check out Oymon's 100% Item Map steam guide. If you are looking for advice on how to get a specific item, lots of folks have put resources out on the web. In particular I know youtube has some stuff, and IGN has a walkthrough.

This Side To Enemy
Collect all the grenade packs

Collect all 30 grenade powerups located around the map in one playthrough.

Surface Tension
Collect all the foam canisters

Collect all 20 foam powerups located around the map in one playthrough.

Mutually Deterant
Collect all the missle packs

Collect all 20 missle packs located around the map in one playthrough.

Unrestricted Access
Collect all passkeys

Collect all 12 passkeys located around the map in one playthrough.

Fort Knox
Collect all the gold bars

Collect all 12 gold bars located around the map in one playthrough.

Charted
Unlock the entire game map

As it says, complete the game map! I got this by reaching lvl. 20. It may be possible to get this by getting 100% map completion as well, I don't know.

From Alpha to Omega
Complete the Omega Armor

Collect all of the pieces of the Omega armor. Most of the pieces are collected during the course of the story. I believe that the missable shotgun, the Inertial Element, is required for this. In addition, you must collect all 12 passkeys in order to get the Fusion Helmet.
Repetition
Get these achievements by doing a few things many times.

Let's Get Punchy
Melee 5 soldiers

Punch 5 soldiers. The default key to melee for k/m is E.

Bomba Punter
Punt 20 Bombas

Awarded for killing 20 bombas with a melee attack. Bombas are the small spider-type robots found all over the complex. Note that bombas can only be meleed when on the floor. You can shoot bombas off a wall and kick them before they explode as well.
Thanks to user Kannushi Link for the correction.

My Head A-Splode
Get 50 headshots

Awarded for getting 50 headshot kills. I believe you can not get headshots on bombas, robots, bosses, etc. but soldiers and their variants (minigun guy, shield guy, grapple ninja) can all be headshot. The name is possibly a reference to Homestar Runner.

Make 'Em Scream
Get 100 soldiers to scream

This one can take a bit. To get this achievement you need 100 soldiers to die while screaming. Soldiers will sometimes scream when shot or melee killed, but seem to scream more often when killed with explosives or environmental items like exploding barrels or grenade pipes.

The Whole 9 Yards
Kill 200 soldiers with a gun emplacement

Simply shoot a lot of folks with a turret. I don't know if the foam turret in the dam will count for this.

Hee-ya!
Knock back enemies 1 kilometer total with melee attacks

This requires you to punch a lot of enemies. This becomes easier when you get the Omega Armor as it increases the knockback on your melee attacks significantly.

Roller Coaster
Take 20 rides on the mine cart

There are two minecarts in the game, but you end up having to break one of them to progress. The remaining minecart is located in the flat hallway on the bottom of the map.

Run, Forrest
Run 10 kilometers total in hyperspeed

For this one you need to get the Friction Dampener, and then just shinespark hyperspeed run around a lot. The minecart area towards the bottom of the map could be good for grinding this. This is likely a reference to the popular novel/movie Forrest Gump.

Complexity Theory
Level up to experience level 10

Get to character level 10! Your level is persistant throughout playthroughs. So if you got to the end of the game without hitting lvl. 10 you can finish this on another run.

Serious Complex
Level up to experience level 50

This is one of few achievements in the game which can take a long time. You can get this by playing through the game a couple times, though how many times will depend on how completely you explore the map. Alternatively there are also many methods of xp farming if you are interested in going that route. Some stuff to keep in mind:
  • Enemy kills give a small amount of xp, while room exploration and collecting powerups gives a larger amount.
  • Killing multiple enemies without getting hit gives you an increasing xp multiplier (shown above your level bar)
  • You get more xp for playing on a higher difficulty (thus the most on insane)
  • Kills with golden weapons (unlocked by getting all 12 gold bars) give 2x xp
  • Many xp grinding routes rely on getting a high xp multiplier, killing a boss or miniboss, and then reloading the save to allow for endless farming
Misc Achievements
Not sure how else to catagorize these! Most of these require you to do some quick tasks with the powerups you can collect.

Let There Be Light
Turn on your flashlight

Turn it on! I would be really impressed if you managed to accidentally beat the game your first time without doing this.

Look Out!
Kill a soldier with a bomba

When you defeat a bomba it will fall down and then explode after a short delay. Use the explosion to kill an enemy soldier to get this achievement. There are a few rooms towards the start of the story which are good for this.

Walkin' On Water
Make it from one end of the lake to the other in hyperspeed

First you need to acquire the Speed Booster, I mean Friction Dampener. Then just hyperspeed across the lake. The lake in question is the one on the right side of the map with a little house in the middle. If you are having trouble I would recommend going from left to right. This gives plenty of room to build up speed and you only need to make one jump onto the island and can run the rest of the way.

Note: This is missable! If you trigger the explosion sequences right before the end of the game, the lake dissapears and you wont be able to get the achievement without doing another run. So make sure to grab it before then! Thanks to OddDo for pointing this out.

Hook, Line and Sinker
Kill an enemy with the Hookshot

You can kill an enemy with the hookshot in two ways.

The first is by repeatedly hitting a soldier with the hookshot until they die. Takes about 3 hits and can be done in the prologue/tutorial section as well as later on in the game.

You can also get this achievement by hitting a soldier with the hook, making them stumble and fall off a ledge to their demise. The room I did this in is near the surface, two tiles to the right of a save point.

Here are screenshots of the room I used:
.

Thanks to user OddDo for pointing out that you can get kills without fall damage.

10.0 From the Judges
Do a triple jump

Collect the CLD Thrust pack as well as the Thrust Boots to be able to triple jump. Then just do the jump and get your achievement.

Old Dog, New Tricks
Perform each type of melee attack (Dropkick, Hanging Takedown, Drop-down Takedown, Double Takedown)

As the description says, peform one cinematic kill of each type to get this achievement. Dropkicks are done by meleeing an enemy while in the air. Hanging takedowns are done on a ledge when an enemy is above you. Drop-down is when you are on a ledge with an enemy below you. Double takedowns just need two people next to each other.

Proven Grounds
Complete the three challenge packs in the Proving Grounds

Complete the 21 missions in the Proving Grounds to get this one. You don't need to play through the tutorials, and you can get any score on the missions as long as you complete it.

The Bigger They Are
Defeat a Devastator with a foam grenade

A foam grenade is when you place foam and then put a grenade in the foam bubble. There is always a Devastator on the surface to the left of the main lake if you are looking for one. It spawns by a river.

Here are screenshots showing the location of the Devastator spawn I used:
.

Speedy Delivery
Complete the final fight in less than 1 minute 30 seconds

This shouldn't be too difficult as is. If you want a really easy time the Fusion Helmet allows you to just sit there and tank any damage you would take while firing the nukes.

Spam In A Can
Defeat an XOS-1 soldier with the Inertial Element

By the time you get the Inertial Element, XOS-1 soldiers no longer appear in the game. To get this achievement you must unlock the golden room (by collecting all 12 gold bars) and acquire the Inertial Element. Then in a second run take the golden Inertial Element from the room and use it to kill an XOS-1 soldier. The earliest one which appears in the storyline is near the Friction Dampener.

5 Shots 5 Kills
Do 5 consecutive headshots without reloading or taking damage

As the description says. I wouldn't recommend the Inertial Element for this as the spread can make it hard to get headshots. If you are having trouble with this one, the Fusion Helmet allows you to take your time and line up headshots without the fear of taking damage.
Completion Challenges
These focus on completing the game with a specific completion percentage, within a specific time, or both! This is where the hard achievements are. If you are attempting these, I wish you the best of luck! Unless otherwise stated, all of these can be done on any difficulty.

Status Update: Single
Complete the game by abandoning Claire to her fate

This is the 'bad ending'. At some point in the story you gain the ability to go to the surface again with the purpose of leaving together with Claire. If you instead find the Jeep you started at and interact with it before reuniting with Claire, you get this achievement.

This achivement can be obtained as soon as you see Claire being taken away in a helicopter. This achivement can no longer be obtained after saving Claire from the two XOS-1 enemies (after getting double jump, before the factory segment).

Can't really blame Jason for leaving honestly.

Completionist
Complete the game with 100% of the items

This one's not so bad. Get all the items before beating the boss, and you'll get this achievement. This can be done on any difficulty. You can check your item percentage on the pause menu. Having the completed map (by getting to level 20) can help a lot here.

Note: there is only one missible item in the game, it is the Inertial Element . As long as you get the Inertial Element before you enter the domed room and escape from the explosions you will be fine. If you haven't gotten it yet and trigger the explosion escape event, just reload your last save.

Missing A Passkey? If you are missing one passkey but can't find any question marks on the map, check the room where you found the Scuba mask. It will appear as a dot on the map even if you haven't gotten the passkey yet.

Gets Better With Age
Complete the game with 8 Health Packs, 19 Grenade Packs, 20 Foam Packs and 9 Missile Packs (8/19/2009)

References the date the original Shadow Complex was released on XBOX Live Arcade. Hooray! The number of armor, passkey, and gold bar pickups you get doesn't matter.

Minimalist
Complete the game with less than 13% items

You may want to first get Infinite Foam by reaching lvl 30 first before attempting this challenge. It is certainly not required, but will allow you to skip out on mobility items in favor of whatever else you may prefer. If you choose to get The Insurgent achievement first, you will also get this one as well.

The Insurgent
Complete the game at 4% with only the Flashlight, Backpack, Grenade, Foam and Missile

This is a fun little achievement which is not as hard as it might seem. It requires you to take a different route which skips most of the map. Due to the extreme lack of mobility, Infinite Foam is essentially a requirement for getting around the Complex. Infinite foam is unlocked at lvl 30. I think only 4 missles are actually needed (two double missle doors near the explosion escape area), so you don't need infinte missles or grenades. lvl 30 is sufficient.

The intended 4% is:
  • the climing backpack
  • the pistol
  • a grenade upgrade
  • a foam item
  • a missle item
That's it, you are not allowed to pick up any other items. Items from the golden room don't count towards your completion perecentage, so it is highly recommended that you unlock the golden room and grab your favorite gun from there. It will make bosses a lot easier.

In addition, if you take a gun from the golden room you can skip the pistol. This lets you complete the run with 3% or you can grab an extra powerup (a health up can help you survive the escape the explosions segment).

The intended route is probably best explained by video. Check out this walkthrough by Youtuber SpaceKop on how to complete this run:

Essentially after picking up the grenades you need to run through a secret entrance to get to the factory early. You need to do the following:
  • Get the grenades and kill the spidertank
  • Do not touch or blow up the grenade door directly above the spidertank boss!
  • Run back to the savepoint you came from
  • After entering the underground lake room you have 30 seconds to make it to the exit on the bottom left. If the floor panel is closed when you get there, reload your last save. If you touched the grenade door it will always be closed so you need to do a new run.
  • Go through the underground passage, and up the ladder in the next room.
  • You need to drop down onto where the enemy is below you to go through the door. If you miss you can't get back up and will need to reload your last save.
  • In the room with the foam door you need the foam bomba to shoot the door open. This can take some time.
  • Proceed as normal, ie. up to the turret room, and get the foam gun as usual.
Now that you have foam you can go anywhere with infinite foam bridges. Go back to the turret room and grab the missle upgrade in the ceiling by making a bunch of foam bridges.

Once you have missles, go beat the game as usual. The escape section can be a little frustrating, but is definitely doable. Skipping the pistol for the health upgrade helps a lot here.

Jason Bailey
Complete the game at 100% in under 2 hours on any difficulty

This is difficult!

The main idea behind this achievement is finding a route which gets you foam, missles, and the friction dampener fairly quickly; as this will cut down on backtracking otherwise required to pick up upgrades.

If you know how to exploit a glitch called z-sliding this opens up more routing options for you, as it lets you get foam and missles extremely early. Read up about z-sliding here[www.speedrun.com]. Note that this seems to require a controller.

Here is a video of gorem2k's current world record[www.speedrun.com] NG+ Insane 100% run. It utilizes z-sliding to get early foam and missles in the route.

If you don't want to use z-sliding or can't, this is still very completable without glitches. Check out the developer ChAIRGames' video on how they 100%ed the game in under 2 hours.

Good luck!

ChAIRness
Complete the game at 100% in under 3 hours on insane

Check the notes above for the Jason Bailey achievement.
End / Level Rewards
Thanks for reading, and I hope you found what you were looking for!

Again if you have requests, advice, critisism, or found some spelling errors; feel free to leave a comment or send me a message.

------

Below is a table of significant rewards given per character level. If you want the full list of rewards check out the wiki[shadowcomplex.wikia.com].

Level
Reward
10
+100 Health
20
Full Map Unlock
30
Infinite Foam
40
Infinite Grenades
50
Infinite Missles

Note that you still need to access the item in your save even if you have infinte ammo. Eg. in a new run you can't use the foam gun until you unlock it, but once unlocked it will have infinite ammo. In addition if you pickup an upgrade before getting the main item, it will not show you as having infinite ammo. Saving and reloading will fix this.

i missed it in my first attempt at a 100% that took me 9ish hours to do on casual and i only got 93ish % and i now hate missable junk
HOOBA PORKRIND 29 Jun, 2021 @ 8:24pm
also there is a missable grenade pack in the mines behind the mine cart spawn as if you dont collect it before breaking the cart system it is blocked by an indestructible cart making it impossible to get the achievement without a new run
wondermech  [author] 15 Jul, 2017 @ 7:50pm
Thanks Kannushi Link. I added more to the Missable Achivement section, put more exact info on triggers for Status Update: Single, and added your correction to the Bomba Punter bit.
Kannushi Link 15 Jul, 2017 @ 7:05am
Also, Bomba Punter do work if you shot down a Bomba from a wall and kick it before it explodes, because the game keep tracking with that achievement for doing this. :P
Kannushi Link 15 Jul, 2017 @ 7:01am
I think "Status Update: Single" should be counted as Missable Achievement, because after you resuce Clarie AGAIN, the jeep is gone and you can't reach this ending.

To be exact, if you trigger "Clarie got captured again", this achievement is no longer achieveable on that save file. (because the door will lock to prevent you go back to the jeep or outside)
