Early Access Review
Urban War Defense is a very bare bones tower defense game consisting of only 4 short maps that can be completed in less than 30 minutes. It has been in Early Access since July 2017 and only had a couple of small updates well over a year ago despite the developer’s planned 6 month release. Rather than update the game, the developer decided to revoke keys from bundles in an attempt to make additional revenue on previously sold licenses.

There is no strategy to the game. Each map is a small, single path road where the enemies shuffle in from the same entry point and make their way to the end. You can place 3 types of turrets in pre-defined slots to stop them. However, the enemies never attack back. All I did was place a couple of missile towers at the beginning of each map and fully upgrade them to annihilate the enemy. Most of the time I didn't even get to see the enemies as they just instantly turned into balls of fire upon spawning in. Each map was exactly the same strategy and despite being labeled “Urban” the maps consisted of a Mountain Road, Gas Station, Farmer's Market, and Parking Lot. There was no story or reasoning behind it.

With such little effort, there isn’t much reason to play this. There are a lot of tower defense games out there that are much better.

Toy Road Constructor is an unfinished mess of bugs that skipped the Early Access stage. Right from the start when starting a new game it has a map selection and there is currently only 1 available and the other states "Coming Soon!" This is never mentioned on the store page that game is unfinished. I managed to finish the first level, but encountered numerous bugs:
  • Clipping through walls and objects - can walk off the map
  • Clunky interface
  • An object can be rotated to where it clips other objects
  • Object edit menu sometimes stays on the screen after deselecting the object
  • Objects do not reset upon restarting a level
  • Broken achievements - upon getting 3 stars on Level 1 the achievement did not unlock
  • Objects can still be edited in run mode
  • Upon restarting the level several times, the camera becomes locked and the game is unplayable

This game is in an early alpha state and needs a lot more work before it would be playable.

*Also, the game is incorrectly tagged as "sandbox". It has set goals - get to finish line and pick up stars within a limited number of attempts.

Save President From Rebels is another joke/fake game from Tero Lunkka. It is another mesh of Unreal asset flips, the main one being: https://www.unrealengine.com/marketplace/field-of-battle-helicopter

Much like this developer’s other games, the levels are all selectable off the main menu with no story or sense of progression. The level design is shoddy where many times you can just fly out of bounds and avoid the enemies entirely. Each level can be completed in under a minute and most just feel like a copy/paste of the previous one. Enemy AI is broken and simply turns around to follow the player – even the grounded tanks will totally flip over onto their top upon being passed.

With such little effort, there isn’t much reason to play this. There are a lot of free games out there that are much better.

Aliens Invaded Our Planet is left too unfinished to recommend, even on a discount. Just the title of the game alone gives a sense of how little effort was put into it. It is riddled with broken achievements, AI (breaks when the player or enemies wonder outside the town), Steam items, point/cash system, ect. The entire game is played on a single map that you’re supposed to defend, but has nothing in it. It’s like the aliens unknowingly picked a high school theater set to invade. Aside from the Sheriff starting station, none of the other buildings can be entered and peering into reveals they are all just completely empty inside. Outside the town is a simple desert with the same cactus asset copied and pasted over again. There have been no updates since it was released or word from the developer. I actually played the game through to the end only to discover there is no actual end, just the words “To be continued…” I couldn’t believe that the dev already has plans to re-release this game again as another quick cash grab without even finishing it first.

Smash Halloween Pumpkins: The Challenge feels like something you would find in one of those "Over 1000 Games" shovelware CDs in the 90s that was loaded with shareware\Freeware\demos. It would probably be one of the better titles, but that’s not saying much. There isn’t a lot of content – most of the levels are very small and aren’t much of a challenge at all. There are only a few actual levels with some moving platforms and strategy involved (showcased in the game trailer.) Only 2 weapons – shotgun and rocket launcher. The boss battles are simple as well – just mash the fire button at them while collecting health and ammo that respawns. It starts out with a story and a short cut scene, but there is no more after that – completing the game just brings up the credits screen.

The biggest challenge is trying to play the game while it hides half of the screen with info boxes. Pick up ammo, health, or even starting a level causes a large info box to popup for a couple of seconds. It has other bugs like when an enemy is hit the flashing sprite stays in place so it looks like there are more enemies than there really are. Overall, it might be a short time waster if you can get it in a bundle, just like how it would have been sold back in the early 1990s.

PlatONIR is a very short and simple platformer game where all 10 levels are pretty much the same. Just go to the right while jumping onto small platforms, get the key, and make your way back to the start where the door is now unlocked to advance to the next level. There is only 1 enemy type (swinging anvil) to dodge.

It took me around 5 minutes to complete the entire game even though the store page falsely advertises “More than 1 hours of gameplay.” There just isn’t enough content to justify selling it as a complete game. Another +1 shovelware title from AFBIK Studio.
