A very good sandbox game where you can do a lot of things and have fun in your own way. Early game could be a bit boring / hard at times but as soon as you start making your own base, things started kicking in. Expect some bugs and pathing issue from time to time but it's not that bad (the good outweight the bad)

If you are turned off by the graphic, the graphic aren't that bad once you get used to it. And you can use reshade to make things a bit better (performance impact). And if you think about it, you control and do things in this game mostly from RTS top down view. and for this kind of view, it really isn't that bad.

Update: If i could give the game a mixed review, i would.

First, what a slap in the face for those who bought the game day 1 from Rockstar. Don't get me wrong, i think the game still is worth the base price (for the singleplayer part anyway) BUT what R* did is really a scumbag move. The least that they could do is hold the sale for another events in months to come but no. Their greedy higher up think this is the best way to show people that they appreciate the support some have given.

Fool of me to think that a big company could at least act professional. Fool of me to think that R* won't violate the Discount policy of steam. Well, guess i will never buy any R* near its first year ever again.

Now, for the game review it self.

Singleplayer is so good. Surprisingly its quite slow paced and quite immersive. I think it trully is a AAA game experience that i rarely get. Personally have no issue with opening / launching it like other people might have experienced tho sometime the first initial game boot take a while.
And performance is alright, managed to tweak the setting to give me 60fps while still making it look great (GTX 1660 TI 16gb ram 6gb vram, 2k res)

--------------------------

now, RD Online is basically a lite, feature strip down version of the base game that replace the fun in the game with grind and "features" that basically give you even more things to grind. It definitely kill the fantastic experience playing the base game. There's no balance between newcomer and higher rank at least in free roam, making fighting higher rank useless and a waste of time. While thankfully there's no real consequences of dying (character) but then it also strip the Risk and Reward factor which is i think would make gameplay more interesting (if there's a balance, that is)

I think RD Online is great on paper but fail miserably in execution. For an online game experience, there are far better MMO out there and some of them are even FTP. what a shame

Gunplay doesn't feel that good with bizarre time to kill, overall graphic is meh at best, movement feels clunky most of the time.

This game is amazing.
It's definitely one of a kind game.

Short ver:
If you like hard, challenging RPG game that feels satisfying when you manage to beat things the game throw at you, you will probably love this. The combat and player movement in this game is what make it stand out because they are tied to the physic engine of the game.

Long ver:

So far, i've only beat both the Novice and Veteran Training and making my way in the Arena. With that said, as of now i will only review the basic mechanic of the game; which is Movement and Combat.

The Movement and Combat in this game is.. unique. It take some time to get used to and hell you WILL probably hate it at first but give it 2-3 hours to memorize the key to your muscle memory and you will start seeing why the movement is made the way it is and quite possibly enjoying it.

::Movement::

So basically, there's 2 mode or phase of movement in the game. One is for travelling, one is for combat. For travelling, you move around with right click, hold and drag and its easy (AWSD is used for slow-paced refined movement) But, for the combat, you will mostly use AWSD. What make it get some used to is the fact that the movement isn't alligned with where your camera is looking but rather relative to where your character is facing.

At first, not gonna lie i thought it was meant to just make the game harder than it need to be and i was about to give up. But i decide to push through, getting used to it, and now it felt quite natural. From time to time i need to adjust the cam if i lost my bearing in the heat of a fight but nothing more. But that's not it. After you get used to both the combat and movement, you will finally understand that reason why movement are the way it is is because it makes your movement more precise in combat. And in this game, timing and positioning are important.

::Combat Mechanic::

Lets start with defense. Your character will try to block attack automatically as long as you are facing the enemy. You can help dealing with defense by actually dodging and move around, parry, etc.

For the attack, there's left right swing, overhead, and thrust. This also require some time to get used to especially when you try to move around at the same time. All of the attack is not a premade animation where you just need to simply press a button or two. It's physics based, which mean that you can just nudge the enemy or YEET the living ♥♥♥♥ out of them, depend on the input and type of weapon. Movement momentum also help to determine the damage you deal combined with the strength of your swing.

That's pretty much it. There are 3 modes currently in the game; Story or Dungeon Crawling, Arena or Career mode, and Practise which will pit you against multiple enemies in 1 run.

Hopefully you'll find this review helpful. One last tip, is try learning the movement and combat right off the bat if you decide to get the game and play it for the first time. Practice Defend (focus on facing the enemy and blocking their attack and learn how enemy attack and how your character react), Movement (move around while facing the enemy. Don't need to attack for now, just get used to the movement for now while facing enemy), and then combat (get used to the swings, overhead, and thrust. Swing is easier to do if you rotate the cursor around your player i find. watch some short tutorial vid if needed) At the end, practise all of them at the same time and try to beat the practise both novice and vet. And by then you should be ready for Arena / Story mode.

It's a game that is bad at where it's supposed to be good at and decent at the rest of the other thing.

Straight to the point, as an RTS game, this game is bad. Compared to MoW:AS2, it lack features that i think make that game amazing.

- You can't place vehicle facing exactly where you wanted it to be.
- AI is quite dumb, including your controlled unit AI, with them not automatically try to go somewhere where they can shoot their given target but instead standing around like an absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ while aiming at the enemy location if something is blocking on their way / line of sight (aka you need to manually move each and every single unit to a good spot in order for them to fire)
- Campaign while not as linear as MoW:AS2, are sometimes garbage. One example is that one time where you are tasked to capture a location and only given 1 AT unit + some other non AT and later on if you lost that 1 unit, there's no way for you to destroy enemy armored and thus making you stuck or failing the scenario.
- Lack content.

However, i will give credit when credit is due. The FPS aspect of it is actually the better among the dev's other titles. It felt nice and doesn't feel as clunky like in MoW:AS2 and passable as like an old school shooter. And the multiplayer is actually pretty decent since in here at least you don't need to deal with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ campaign scenarios / AI as much.

So yeah. For me, as an RTS game that i played mostly solo-coop, this game is definitely a down grade from MoW:AS2 and i wouldn't recommend it. But if you care only for the multiplayer pvp aspect of it, maybe you can give it a try.

Interesting concept, poor execution.
Gameplay is simply boring. Can't carry more than 5 slot stuff. Watcher being too annoying if they are against you. Can't vault over obstacle so you can get stuck at things often. Gas nade op. Hitreg is bad. No armor and stuff. While i dig the concept art style (remind me of fallout. i like that can of vintage art style feel) the in game graphic is bad and cartoony aka doesn't have the same vibe as the art.

I'd say give it a try since it's free anyway but a lot of work and content needed.

Early Access Review
I want to make my review as compact as possible, and hopefully give you the idea of what to expect from the game and all.

So Ground Branch is essentially a hardcore, tactical, old school shooter with focus more on the PVE side. The game feels quite similar to old school tactical games like SWAT 4, old ghost recon etc. The game have a very solid idea, but still feels incomplete. As of now, it's a game where you can do a pretty cool in depth customization of your gun and character looks, good hardcore gameplay where you can't just run and gun because 1-3 bullet is enough to kill you, but it lacks the features of tactical realism mechanics and content as of the time i write this review.

in short: I would recommend this game ONLY for those who have a thirst for old school tactical shooter. For a tactical hardcore shooter in general, it still lacks the basic mechanics that can make this game a great tactical hardcore shooter but the base foundation is there. For more info you can continue reading below.

GAME MECHANICS

what i think is a rather important mechanics that would complete the solid foundation the game have going on are still IN THE WORKING and not yet present. There's no accurate ballistics system that could differentiate different weapon with different caliber yet, no different armor types yet, no weight and encumbrance system yet, no realistic health system with different wound type yet. So what you get in the end is a game with cool looking customization but with minimal immersive hardcore mechanic for now.

CONTENTS

As of the time when i write this review, the contents available is very minimal and limited. There's quite a few map that you can play on with different time of the day set and different modes but these maps aren't as dynamic as you'd think it would be reading the description and trailer, at least not yet. As for the modes while there's quite a few PVP based modes, the main attraction of the game is the PVE terrorist hunt mode which basically what most random people play. So if you want some PVP action, you need to find some people outside the game server browser most of the time.

as for the guns and customization, it's also quite limited. There's quite a few selection of assault riffles and sub machine gun but there's only 1-2 choice for other type of weapon like shotgun, lmg, and marksman weapon. Secondary is limited to a few hand gun. The game while having a pretty cool and in depth accessory customization like shown in the trailer, still lack real customization to the gun it self (like maybe type of stock, handle, mag type and size variant, etc)

character skin and load out are very basic. you can choose a few cosmetic like type of clothings to things like type of vest, headgear, etc even tho there's not much of a different in what you choose aside for cosmetic since, as mentioned before, some mechanics are still in the work. But it does have a rather unique mechanic of modular customization tho for things like headgear and vest or equipment load out which is very very cool and i hope it will be developed further at one point.

GUN PLAY AND GAMEPLAY

Gunplay feels nice. it felt like you are shooting a firearm with bullets instead of no recoil laser like some games do. The scope feel nice even tho longer range scope can make you have tunnel vision and make it very hard to look for enemy. Sound design are still in the work so some sound still kinda meh or odd but overall its pretty well done. gunplay for shotgun and marksman are meh. It doesn't have the feeling of you using one at least imo.

Gameplay it self is pretty solid. you need to play it methodical and tactical with slower pace approach to play it right but sadly most random just go in with basic planning and rushing mindset with minimal communication, and will rage or be toxic if they got TK accidentally because they run around alone and go in random direction and with minimal to no communication and coordination. I haven't tried PVP yet but im pretty interested to see if i can play with some people that might be interested to have a friendly tactical pvp match.

and i think lastly i wish the game would give you some QoL mechanics like maybe tactical ping where you can ping or point at a general direction so your teammates would know what they are referring to when they say "over there near the building" when there's multiple buildings. I dont mind not having tactical ping if only the game have some sort of bearing system that you can use for reference but there's none, which make even coordination with mic rather difficult at time.

GRAPHICS, SOUND, ANIMATION, OPTIMIZATION

The graphic in this game is pretty good. there are times when the game would looks really good and other when its meh.

Sound design is again still in the work but overall is pretty nice. It still lack some sound or music or sfx like menu sounds, ambient, etc but based of the teaser video i think at least some sound or music or sfx update will come soon.

Animation is wanky and there's still some animation missing like climbing ladder, some detail in gun reload animation, idle and other detail animation, and overall polished animations. so overall, animations still feel rough. AI animation especially is pretty bad. The ai didn't looks like a human being with them standing still in a weird static pose so it can kill your immersion at times. but hey, they are working on it and its not like its an urgent game breaking thing.

Optimization is good enough i think as far as i could tell but i have a rather powerful pc so that might be a bit biased.

note: i will keep updating this review as the game updated and as i spent more time in the game

The game is good, i enjoy the gameplay and even tho i replay the same maps over and over, slashing hordes of chaos and skaven never gets old. One thing i really hope they would add is more cosmetic that is actually good and new weapons variant

While the game need more and better tutorials than just "hey, press this and finish the tutorial" for new comers, ive been enjoying my time in the game so far. Graphics looks great, performance is good.

One thing i hate so far is the microtransaction. yes it's cosmetic only but like locking the cosmetic solely behind real money paywall is quite something. And hell i'll still let it get away with that but YOU NEED TO PAY MONEY FOR EVEN A SIMPLE COLOR PAINT JOB. Plus, each paintjob is only for a specific type of ship. That's just next level BS right there.

just note, this is not a game for you if you
- dont like walking simulator with pretty scenery
- dont have much time to grind for stuff
- have a very low attention span and get easily lost interest in doing repetitive task
