Description
Family Matters lets you assign inheritable traits (Family Lineage, Patrilineage, and Matrilineage) to yourself or your parents, to follow relatives and descendants through the ages. It also lets you mark closely related blood or in-law relatives with a trait.

I created this mod to be able to easily distinguish close and distant relatives when playing with rulers I didn't know anything about. I also wanted to keep track of relatives, including own bastards (whether publicly discovered or not), just as well as I kept track of children, and take all information easily into account when arranging marriages or granting land.

Since Crusader Kings has no winners or losers, it seems much more fun to be able to know how successful your descendants are...and help them along the way. Maps show land currently held by your relatives, and all living relatives can be found with character searches.

I use it in combination with FUN's Biography + Biography Family Matters, and War Maps (which make it multiplayer incompatible).

(This mod will break the usual immersion of the game regarding secret bastards of non-player relatives, hence indirectly also their lovers, because the traits added are inherited from the Real Father).

1. Become a Patron of Your Family Annals
You need to become a patron of your Family Annals, a chronicle of family secrets lead by your Court Chaplain. It is inherited by family members and managed by your player character.

Interacting with chroniclers has a cost (and might have a benefit) in terms of Piety, Prestige, Gold, and Opinion (AI won't do).
2. Lineages
Lineages are Fame traits that appear on character GUIs and character selection menus.
  • Every new founded lineage adds a star to the trait icon, so different generations can be distinguished visually.
  • Founders have a general +5 opinion modifier.
  • Those with the same lineage group share a small opinion modifier.
You can use lineage traits to keep track of family members and their ultimate connection to any of your previous player characters.
Family Lineage

Family Lineages will permeate the whole genealogical tree:
  • Maximum of 26 Founders.
  • The Founder can be Male or Female. When assigned to a parent, a Primary Parent will be selected based on their relative rank.
  • All (Males and Females) inherit the trait from the Founder.
  • All (Males and Females) pass the trait on to the next generation.
  • +2 Opinion modifier for same trait group.
Please Note: Newer founded lineages take precedence over older ones for newborns, always, regardless of paternal or maternal rank. Any other check at birth would break the expected behavior of the traits.
Patrilineage

Paternal Lineages, like Y-DNA, will only follow direct male lines:
  • Maximum of 26 Founders.
  • The Founder is Male.
  • Only Males inherit the trait from the Founder.
  • Only Males pass the trait on to the next generation.
  • +5 Opinion modifier for same trait group.
Matrilineage

Maternal Lineages, like mtDNA, will let you follow mainly female lines:
  • Maximum of 17 Founders.
  • The Founder is Female.
  • All (Males and Females) inherit the trait from the Founder.
  • Only Females pass the trait on to the next generation.
  • +3 Opinion modifier for same trait group.

3. Family Marks

You can mark your Player Character's:
  • Close Family members.
  • Extended Family members.
  • Super Extended Family members, which includes close or extended family of Close and Extended Family members.
This adds a Genetic trait to characters, which will appear prominently in Character selection GUIs. For example, during marriage arrangements you will have a better visual idea of how inbred the children of a pair closely related to you can be.

Once the mark is set, the system will try to assign the appropriate mark to newborn children of relatives, but after a while (one or two generations) it is best to just remove all blood marks and add them again, to have an accurate picture of family connections.

4. Map Modes
Clicking on the plus sign on the Map Modes GUI (bottom right corner) you have a view of the domains held by characters with the different traits, with domains under your own player character marked in a similar but slightly darker color.

Holdings with special buildings have the darkest/black color, and provinces held by holy orders have lightest/white color.

Maps are static, they will not update in real time: you need to click again to see changes. Updates would require global variables, incompatible with multiplayer.

For another (better?) Map Modes GUI, check out my other mod, War Maps.

5. FAQ
Translations
  • English and Spanish by me.
  • Korean by Luka.
  • Chinese WIP by 雲枫岫 at Paratranz[paratranz.cn]
Usable with other languages. Post your translations in the comments.
Compatibility
  • Might conflict with mods that change Map Modes GUI or traits, depending on load order.
  • You must start a new game.
  • Does NOT work in multiplayer.
Issues
Let me know of any errors you encounter. Especially ideas about improving the performance are very welcome. In times of crusades and with thousands of living characters, assigning a trait might slow down the game.
Suggestions
Let me know in the comments what you would change and let's see what other people think.
  • Cost and rewards of founding.
  • More or less lineage traits.
  • Assigning lineages to more distant ancestors.
  • Selecting specific parents.
  • Assign distinct lineages to friends, enemies, etc. (right button interaction).
  • etc.
Credits
I am not a programmer, and these are my first mods, so credit where it's due:
Reuse
You can create forks, redo it, use it in full or in part in your own mods... Just please credit this mod and if possible share yours for others to improve.

Upon investigation, it was found that this mod causes display errors and failure in "map mode" (referring to political and terrain maps). This seems to be caused by the 'map' file in mod/gui.

@theernestrain You might need to test depending on whether you also use Trade Maps DTR, the author of DTR seems to suggest loading this mod before Trade Maps DTR (on the DTR page where it refers to sub-mods.)

I've yet to test myself as I'm building a new playset at the moment.

Should this mod load before or after DTR?
