Resident Evil 2: Source (v1)

Description
This is essentially a backup of the first version I got to function on the workshop, using the GMOD version of the maps. Original description is to follow, but just know you should only be seeing / playing this one if you don't like the new version I posted. I'll put a link HERE to the new version once that's up in case that's what you want to try first.

PLEASE NOTE: This content was not made by me, but the original creator has given permission for it to be ported over to HL2VR's workshop.

What is this?
These four maps + assets are a recreation of the Resident Evil 2 "Leon A" scenario. (The original game, not the remake, by the way.) It plays out very similarly to the original game in terms of progression, with changes here and there to make it work better in the Half-Life 2 engine. There's also some secret weapons and traversal methods not doable in the original game, since the Source Engine gives you a lot more freedom of movement. (For example, a headstrong explorer may find an RPG in the second level.)

How do I play this?
Thanks to workshop, it's a lot easier than the manual method.
  1. Make sure no game is currently running (including SteamVR!) or the files may not sync
  2. Subscribe to this item, wait for Steam to grab the files
  3. Open the game
  4. On the main menu, select "Workshop"
  5. Make sure Resident Evil 2: Source is listed in the Workshop content window, then click "browse maps"
  6. Select the map you want to play (re2_1_gmod if starting new) and click "load map"

Do you need to play the original game to beat this?
No, but it does help a lot. If you don't know what to do, explore and try pressing +Use on everything. And pay attention to what key items you pick up (designated by the item disappearing and the name of the item appearing in your vision as floating text).

Do I have to make any special considerations for playing this in VR compared to flatscreen?
A few, though the maps do play pretty well in VR from the start. For your consideration, though:
  • Map 1 doesn't give you a suit, and if you transition from map 1 -> 2, you still won't get one. Not having a suit makes this mini-campaign considerately harder, if not impossible. (I also on occasion find myself stuck in place when transitioning from 1->2, though it doesn't happen every time...)
    • I recommend that when you reach map 2, pause your game and use the Workshop menu to load map 2 directly, which will give you the suit as well as your crowbar and pistol, and continue playing from there. (Transitioning from map 2 -> 3 and 3 -> 4 seemed to work just fine, so you shouldn't have to repeat the process for those.)
  • I recommend turning pickup outlines OFF and pickup style to MANUAL. Otherwise you'll be picking up guns/ammo before even seeing them, and sometimes picking them up through containers due to physics issues. (Item boxes, lockers, etc)
  • I recommend turning ladder climbing to SIMPLE. I've tried climbing them immersively, but dismounting seems finicky. You're welcome to try it for yourself of course.
I test-played these four maps before making this public and was able to complete it with no issues aside from what I've already mentioned above. Nevertheless, if you run into something different, feel free to share.
