I loved freeze tag in Quake Live so maybe this would be fun
JAS-C 15 Nov, 2024 @ 9:06am
@Woshee I'm sure that sounded better in your head.

You know what that's entirely fair, I'll bring that up to my team!
File naming scheme is something I feel strongly about with tf2 maps, we wanted it to be immediately apparent what you were in for when you started loading into a map, hence why we made it arena_mapname instead of ft_mapname, since you can still expect the standard arena rules etc
「The Visitor」 10 Nov, 2024 @ 5:15pm
That being said my only gripe with the gamemode is the file naming scheme, i think the maps should be have a prefix of arena_ft_[map name] for better categorization
「The Visitor」 10 Nov, 2024 @ 5:12pm
After playing this map and the others on a server this was the most fun I had playing arena mode. I honestly consider this gamemode a significant upgrade from the vanilla arena experience. I had so many laughs from the deranged clustered situations that happened further exemplified by the chaotic vc that emerged because of this gamemode. overall 10/10 experience
JAS-C 9 Nov, 2024 @ 10:42am
Okay, I just remembered the first example of Revive system I could.
TheGhostThatWas 9 Nov, 2024 @ 10:21am
Very interesting take on Arena! Although I think lore-wise, it's a bit weird you freeze solid where you stand when you die. But I think that doesn't matter too much when this looks like something that could help Arena be more fun to play
Lo-fi Longcat  [author] 9 Nov, 2024 @ 8:06am
Might confuse players thinking that they can shoot them while they're down to kill them permanently. Also might lead to confusion with stuff like the mourning mercs taunt putting characters very low on the ground
JAS-C 9 Nov, 2024 @ 7:59am
Would be funny if mercs'll get a "Knocked down" animation like in CoD Zombies or Brink(Considering that players can't shoot in such state the last example is more fitting).
It can be used with no specific theme and it looks less dramatic comparing to huge hologram or ice statue which can give an idea that anybody can help.
Lo-fi Longcat  [author] 9 Nov, 2024 @ 7:42am
We're actually planning on continuing support for freeze tag after the smissmas update drops, by giving map makers tools and assets to create more thematically appropriate maps for summer/halloween, and the MVM hologram idea is pretty much what we had planned for the summer variant of freeze tag.
We weren't going to go EXACTLY with the MVM holograms, as that has the connotation of "only a medic can revive this", and it wouldn't allow us to show the hat that the player is wearing, nor pose them in their death pose, but you've hit the nail on the head for what we were planning to do for future support :)
Sanshi 9 Nov, 2024 @ 7:28am
maybe instead of actually freezing the mercs on death, they drop the little holograms from mvm? it would make more sense and boost immersion, plus it would make it easier to identify at far away distances what team it is and what class they are

This is actually one of the greatest gamemode concepts ive seen for arena if not the best. It looks insanely fun and like a perfect fit for Christmas, but not so Christmasy that it can't be in normal map rotation. Really good job guys im crossing my fingers for this to get in!
Pootsworthy 8 Nov, 2024 @ 1:31pm
TF2 fans when they see a group of like-minded creators collaborate on a unique in-game experience (it's slop it's mid i hate it grrrrrr >:c)

@wget Please stop stoking the flames of unnecessary drama and childish name-calling. It's completely uncalled for and unwarranted. This is the second time we've had to delete your comment now, and we don't stand for targeted abuse of anyone. Please don't post it again.
Acienspo (Acien) 8 Nov, 2024 @ 6:04am
I actually like the idea of a Freeze Tag gamemode. helps to keep Arena matches fresh without being too intrusive on tf's core gameplay
Iroha 8 Nov, 2024 @ 5:42am
emporium has fallen
millions must slop retextured summer maps :cozybrawlhalla1:
Lo-fi Longcat  [author] 8 Nov, 2024 @ 3:16am
Sure, there are some people on the maps that are in the emporium, but that's just bound to happen with community created content like this on the workshop. As I said, of the "Freeze Tag" team, only I'm really active on the emporium. If you look at maps like Aspen, Applecakey and Pigeon aren't really active on the emporium at all. The same with Freyja, on Himalaya. As well as Squishy from Melchior, and Nat-Tea from Melchior and Cryo.
The people on the Freeze Tag project come from all sorts of communities, none of them are localised entirely from one specific discord server or anything. It's just people who wanted to make something fun together.
zythe_  [author] 8 Nov, 2024 @ 3:03am
as lofi said, i dont really consider this as "made by the emporium" because it wasnt primarily tested there, neither are most of the people working on it active there or even in the discord, but i get where youre coming from, its definently "associated" at the very least, people will make assumptions, they always will and thats fine, i and many others just dont like it when those assumptions lead to people simply writing off a project outright, without ever looking into the efforts that were made to make sure the gamemode fits into the game, things like avoiding arbitrary class balance, removing teams/classes, etc, while rooting new mechanics like thawing in established game design.

Im glad its being discussed but pls keep it civil!
Naf 8 Nov, 2024 @ 2:58am
"I'm really the only prominent member of the emporium on the Freeze Tag team"

I dont think thats entirely correct. Many names that I see among map makers and modders for Freeze Tag made appearances on Emporium. Yrrzy, Square, Diva Dan, Zythe just to name a few

Sure, it might not be just "an emporium specific thing", but its definitely "emporium adjacent". And most of the time thats all that people need to jump to conclusions
Lo-fi Longcat  [author] 8 Nov, 2024 @ 2:11am
@Naf I'm really the only prominent member of the emporium on the Freeze Tag team, but it wasn't specifically developed on the Emporium at all, I just kinda posted my progress there for people to see in case they thought it was interesting.
The true bulk of the testing, iteration, feedback and development cycle was done on servers like TF2Maps, Aarmastah's server, and UEAKCrash's server. To say that Freeze Tag is specifically an "emporium" thing is just a flagrant lie, I'm afraid.
JAS-C 7 Nov, 2024 @ 11:12pm
@Naf yeah, that's the raising problem that I don't know if someone want to fix it. Like we can't get a VSH/Community-made tab into Additional Gamemodes for already added ones and I don't think that Valve would stop the flow of maps and don't know if they even know about "Map rotation" idea at all. And that's all the problems beyond our capabilities which is sad and it makes us funnel proposition more delicate yet civilized and support more the projects we want to see like it was in waiting of this year's Scream Fortress.
Naf 7 Nov, 2024 @ 10:17pm
Fair enough. Admittedly Freeze Tag is less egregious if you compare it to something like PropHunt when it comes to fitting TF2 main map rotation.

Personally I just dont think that TF2 needs more maps. I didn't bother finishing this year's Halloween contracts beyond 20% because there are just so many maps of various quality that its no longer fun to play them all
JAS-C 7 Nov, 2024 @ 10:14pm
I'm just tired of those things and felt shitty today that I need to blow the steam somewhere.
Sometimes it really hard to get it why some modes gets love it deserved but others not. Especially when slop-comments is the first thing you see. I may only suggest to mapmakers hold their horses and put more work into developing a feature for one map per mode and make it similar to already existing gameplay like it went with Dynamite, Life Snatcher and many more Scream Fortress proposed maps from this instead of making very gimmicky ambitious mode that would support multiple maps from the start that would lack details and some polish...
But again it's too long compared to "Go to GMod with your mode!" so what I would know.
JAS-C 7 Nov, 2024 @ 9:53pm
@Naf Oh yeah, this peanut gut having really high standards if we'll judge his detailed review of whole mode. /s
I'm tired of people using those loud words in every possible situation. It's simply ruining any potential of critique towards mode and downgrading word like in that one South Park episode when they said word "Shit" over 160 time.
You at least gave some reasoning but those one-liners down there is no-brainer. Here is some people that have actual questions like "How does it fit overall aesthetic and dynamic of a game?", "It is not looks very in style of game" etc and etc. But like other half of comments just spamming mocking statements with 0 even opinion about map itself - just "Slop mode! No/Not Interested".
Standards are good, but reasoning behind them is more viable simply because in other way we would have not creative supportive community but 2 angry mobs pushing out and calling each other names.
Naf 7 Nov, 2024 @ 9:27pm
Next time come up with better strawman. God forbid people have basic standards
JAS-C 7 Nov, 2024 @ 9:15pm
Every damn custom game mode proposition melting my hope in humanity as a damn torch lamp melting the ice cream... Like really, if you doing some mode that not entirely on balanced teams - slop! GM with some kind of chaotic gimmick - slop! GM made with people that parts of Emporium - SLOP! Yet another Arena rework to make it more viable - SLOP! Some signs of VScript that was integrated for people to work with and experiment with - SLOP! Fuck me! Fuck you! Fuck this stupid game! End it's life now, Valve! We don't deserve a shit beside 6 starting... I mean 3 launch maps because other half of them are unbalanced mishmash of SLOP and one even has it's quirky gamemode that nobody wanted. Fuck that all, man...
Naf 7 Nov, 2024 @ 8:38pm
Zythe, the entire Freeze Tag project seems to be developed hy prominent Emporium members. So I'm not sure why do you expect people not to conclude that this map was also created in Emporium workshoppee circles
goulash 7 Nov, 2024 @ 8:32pm
vscript slop

If you want to play lumberyard again, Lizard of Oz has created a community fix that should allow all the old arena maps to be playable in casual! If you're an arena enjoyer like me, feel free to check it out here:

Played this, it's reminiscent of arena_lumberyard, wish we could have that map as a koth map in order to revive it.
Pretty solid map nonetheless
bonez 7 Nov, 2024 @ 6:31am
Got to play this map a little bit while it was being tested, very fun and I think it would be a nice addition to the game :)
