Wow! Wow! And WOW! I loved this. I had no idea someone could build something like this in Portal. I’ve played over 4,000 hours and this is hands down the BEST level I’ve ever played. Thanks.

Puzzles? There's no puzzles here.

i just spent. a Very long time playing this map on the highest difficulty, carefully placing all of the turrets in a couple corners of the first room and also getting all the secrets. wish i recorded it but i did take screenshots of the final results (spoiler warning for some secrets). very fun map and this little pacifist run challenge i set for myself was satisfying. shout out to my doom-obsessed friend, without her help it would have taken me even longer to find the secrets.

Amazing what can be done in this game. Thanks for making a great map with a retro feel.
h99pilot 5 Nov, 2020 @ 3:55pm
Kudos for a fine retro map. Also hats off to Timoteeei for completion. I subscribed to him long ago and his "Balls and Cubes" puzzle was awesome. This game platform seems to have endless possibilities. Thanks for the amount of work it must have taken to produce this version. Innovation is a great thing...keep it up! Still my #1 fave is " Interference (HARD)" good luck there. Cheers

Excellent!

I beat Ultra-Violence with no cheats.

The hardest part was finding a way to remove the blue gel from the edgeless cube. The cube stack required for the laser bounce to the portal gel was also a nightmare. Barely enough room to stack it in the sweet spot and meanwhile, the bouncy ball keeps bowling it over... But I finally was able to clean the ball with portal gel so it would stay put in the receptacle and finally get into the orange gel room (which is not counted as a secret BTW).

Killing all 79 turrets was a piece of cake by comparison. Just like the original Doom, a huge waste of time but irresistible fun. A little bit more maneuvering space between the wall and the sweet spot for the cube stack would have been nice. Thanks.

Thumbs up for a great huge effort. Not my favorite style, however.

Can someone tell me where the speed gel is?
henpitts 8 Jan, 2014 @ 5:05pm
Yeah! Got the Doom secrets and got to the speed gel room using lasers and portable gel. Don't know what else needs to be done.

Can I play, Daddy? XD

I can't figure out which version of your E1M2 I should download. The link you listed on your E1M1 was to this version, but on this version, you wrote a Sept 2012 comment, linking to "another version of this map... for a competition."

I'll download this one for now, but if I'm grabbing an out of date version, please reply to this message.

This is amazing map. Also, I beat this on Nightmare. It was a bitch though, But i made through it.

Very nice, I nearly forgot the last secret, its been a long time since I last played doom :)
The Sojourner 30 Sep, 2012 @ 8:15pm
Playing this map doesn't really feel like Portal to me. It's kinda tricky to figure out exactly which surfaces are portalable and which aren't. However I have a gripe much, much larger than that: WHY CAN'T I TURN OFF THE MUSIC WITHOUT TURNING OFF THE REST OF THE GAME SOUNDS??!!??
Gouldron 13 Sep, 2012 @ 7:59am
This remember me of the old classic doom...

also good replay value.
just favorited this great epic map.
blue sphere handy for those hard to reach places/turrets.
could not find all secret rooms (never could on original doom's,)
probably because never liked that aspect of the game.
but will happily go back to kill the enermy.

great amazing map
love the respawning or teleporting zombie turrets.
thankyou for letting us know when they are respawning.
a lot of portal players, don't like getting killed.
so that might be why your ratings are not even higher.
though your different dificulty levels must help you a lot, with your ratings.
I am impressed with that as well.
please try 1 or more of my maps & give feedback
their is 6 with turrets, 1 without,

No, that was supposed to be Wheatley. I think I know what secret you missed. It's hidden somewhere between the room with the windows and the cube on top of the pillar that you can lower with a switch, and the computer maze. That secret has an Easter Egg. But watch out if you're wearing headphones!
Geneosis 22 Aug, 2012 @ 10:20am
Hem I found a dead core somewhere in the map... Not sure if that was the space core anyway...
carl.kenner  [author] 22 Aug, 2012 @ 9:40am
Did you find the space core ?
Geneosis 22 Aug, 2012 @ 7:25am
Well, played in Ultra-Violence, activated white gel like a boss :p And then... I sincerely apologize about your beautiful textures but they have been reset to white X)
Butt all that was after I killed all the turrets ^^ Anyway I don't get where is this last secret... I found tons of hidden places in the map, and at the en I tried to neclip in case I forgot some, but found nothing more X) Where the hell is this last secret area??
carl.kenner  [author] 9 Aug, 2012 @ 11:21pm
Of the 2058 current subscribers, only 521 voted, and 16% of them voted it down.
That's a problem with hard or long maps. People don't finish them, so they don't vote. Most people won't rate a map until they complete it, and this one is hard to complete.
Also some people won't like the dark flashing lights, confusing mazes, deadly barrels, and lots of monsters, even though they are what DooM is all about. The easiest difficulty setting fixes all those problems though.
Timoteeei 9 Aug, 2012 @ 5:30pm
Awesome map, since my first run it is still fun.
I really don't understand why is has only 4 stars of 5.

How about build map in DukeNukem3D style? Can you handle with that? I'll be waiting for it forever (or i'll just try to make it by myself :D ) Anyway i want to share with you my last map based on the Minecraft.
Please check it out http://cs2bus.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=88328095 . i need your comment and feedback :3

Wow. 64MB of RAM was a lot back then.
gr33nm44n 19 Jul, 2012 @ 9:02pm
Fantastic! *goes all misty eyed looks off reminising about the first time Doom played on his 486 DX2 66Mhz. 64RAM.* Really enjoyed playing it.
carl.kenner  [author] 5 Jul, 2012 @ 1:46am
Sorry about hiding the Nightmare button... but I wanted to separate the difficulty level that "isn't even remotely fair" from the others, and in a way that beginners wouldn't notice but experts would. I posted a screenshot of it as the first image above though, just in case.
Ordon Draconis 4 Jul, 2012 @ 12:39pm
You're right. After I posted, I realized I had one extra cube allowing me to still solve the puzzle, and thus "fix" both the cube and the sphere. All in all, very fun.

Oh! Totally missed the nightmare button on the ceiling. Three times through, and still having fun. Great map.
carl.kenner  [author] 4 Jul, 2012 @ 10:58am
The turrets should respawn 30 seconds after they die, and the screen will flash green and the teleport sound will be heard. I didn't implement the teleport sprite though, so the body just disappears and the turret appears again where it started out.

I'm not sure how people are solving the gel puzzles, but my intended solution requires you to remove the bounce gel from the sphere (without using water), and you can use the same method on the cube.

But if you don't mind not having the blue and white gels both going together, then you have one more cube than you need. (Or three more if you have the Razer Hydra).
Ordon Draconis 3 Jul, 2012 @ 6:28pm
Vast quantities of fun. I just might have enjoyed this more than any other map. I had to play it twice. After killing all the turrets on nightmare, I accidentally spilled blue paint on one of my cubes making it bouncy. Unless I'm mistaken, that ends all hope of solving the puzzle. So, I played it over, getting the orange gel before playing with the blue. :) I thought I was on the toughest level, but didn't see any turret respawning. Must of missed something. Thanks for making this for us.

Brilliant, as an old time gamer, i used to love doom, good conversion, must have spent some hours on this.

I updated it! Now you can choose your difficulty level. So there is something to suit every kind of player, from the casual, to the puzzle-solver, to the turret fighter, to the hard-core ninja. If you didn't like it before, try it again now!

I have a feeling this will bring me way back in a very good way ;p

GREAT!

Barrels "less" deadly? I would have hated to play the earlier version then. But seriously, I didn't think this kind of adaptation would work well, but it does! And seeing a dozen blueish turrets bouncing around the computers is a laugh. I'll go back to try find the survivor. Looking forward to more mayhem with...Proom?...Dortal? Nah. =)
carl.kenner  [author] 7 Jun, 2012 @ 6:35am
@Tom, that was intended. The gel puzzles are optional . You don't need them to win, just if you like making a mess. Getting all the kills and secrets, and rescuing the survivor, are also optional. There are supposed to be several possible ways to get past turrets. The blue gel is one way.
Off The Leash 6 Jun, 2012 @ 10:03pm
I agree with Sicklebrick completely. Well done.
Tom 6 Jun, 2012 @ 1:18pm
I finished it without using any gel and just one laser cube. Was that intended or did I find a workaround?
carl.kenner  [author] 6 Jun, 2012 @ 11:47am
@Sicklebrick, thanks! That's a real honour coming from you. I liked your minigame and I've been studying your scripting to see how you did it.

Thank you. Did you find the one that's Still Alive? It's an Easter Egg. It should talk, including new lines not heard before (if I packed the level correctly).

You need to solve the tricky puzzle outside at the end of the level before you can get the orange gel. And you have to mine the moon rocks with the mining laser to get the white gel. There is no water gel, so don't bother searching high and low for it, you need a different technique.
